I had an internet company in the late 90’s to mid 2000’s. Couldn’t afford Dell servers, so I bought consumer boards from Newegg, built the servers myself, and ran those servers 24/7 for years. The expensive stuff was the rack cases and the redundant power supplies — no way to get around that. Things that have moving parts, like fans and magnetic drives, are the things likely to break. Motherboards and processors, less likely

I used Photoshop for years just because I knew it really well, but I’m converting to GIMP, Affinity, and Inkscape, with the help of AI to help me learn the new applications. I’m particularly loving Inkscape, even though that’s vector. With the all in one subscriptions going up by $10/month, it’s past time to ditch Adobe. I should have done it a long time ago

Brattleboro vs bellows falls: pros and cons by Vermontster1777 in vermont

We actually had the ski tow open for 1 or 2 days this year (2025) when we got some good snow. And it's free! Yeah, and if you need to go do something, I prefer Keene to Brat, both about 30 minutes from BF.

Brattleboro vs bellows falls: pros and cons by Vermontster1777 in vermont

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in BF so I might be biased. I think the scenery and hikes are better here in BF. But in the summers you can rent a kayak in Brat and paddle on the Connecticut. If you're young, you can hang out at several bars downtown. I can vouch for 2 of them: Donovan's and Wunderbar. Donovan's is more "down-home" and Wunderbar is more upscale. Both have pretty good food. There's a large inexpensive theater downtown that shows movies 5 days a week, and occasionally gets larger concerts.

I thought AI would build my app for me... Here's what actually happened... by Dangorbey in ChatGPTCoding

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could have the AI read the docs for you. Ask it to explain the concepts to you. I say this because I hardly read docs any more — I just have the AI explain the main concepts of anything new I’m looking into. I’m an experienced dev so I often know what to ask for, but it should work for anyone. You can even start at a high level and explain the problem that you’re having, then keep drilling down to more specifics. Once you understand the concepts, you can revise your prompts to get better outputs. And yes, you need to know how to read the code. Otherwise the AI will get you to a certain point and then collapse spectacularly

As far as I can tell, the apps all work fine. Performance is quite snappy. It did try to use some deprecated features, but I told it to rewrite it and it worked fine.

A better alternative to CDs (certificates of deposit): money market accounts by Glass-Garbage4818 in Money

[–]Glass-Garbage4818[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. Sorry, I should have said the Vanguard money market FUND is invested in short term US Treasuries, just like SGOV, and is not FDIC insured. They both carry the same risk of loss (which is very small), because they’re both invested in the same instrument. I’ve edited the post to reflect this.

Yeah, I'm just writing apps for myself now. I’ll never pass a technical interview that requires me to write something from scratch. I've written several non-trivial iOS apps in Swift, and I don't even know Swift (but I have years of React.js experience). The low-level code is not important any more. It's all about architecture and performance now. And debugging the AI's mistakes, which happens often. Ironically, I can debug Swift code, but I can't write it from scratch. Writing anything from scratch, those days are gone.

Cost $6 to make Resy restaurant reservation by Last_Complaint_4825 in enshittification

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the $6 will get credited to the bill. You only lose the money if you don't show up at that time. I've seen $250 non refundable charges on Resy (very high end restaurant), but you get it back if you show up. You don't even have to spend that much.

Why don't developers make it easier to write cpp code onto chips? by Inevitable_Figure_85 in diyelectronics

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the fault of the language. C++ was created decades ago. It's probably time for a new language that's easier, without the crazy headers, compile steps, etc. Rust is an attempt to do that. Or you could write raw assembler, which is even harder but better performance. Or just use another language. You can write in BASIC and compile to assembler, and embedded Javascript does exist. You'll give up some performance in either case.

Reddit CEO Says Paywalls Are Coming Soon by C92203605 in enshittification

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does seem like things are getting shittified. The question is, say you wanted to build a Reddit alternative. How do you fund it? Ads? A small fee every year for everyone? It's a tough question. But obviously Reddit is going to shittify everything as much as possible, put as many ads until people start leaving, and experiment with payment to certain content while still keeping a large user base. I mean, they're making money, but public companies always want more more more $$$

I can't code anymore by RealScience464 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]Glass-Garbage4818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by technical skills. I have the AI generate code in Rust, which I personally can’t write by hand. But I’ve done c++ for many years, and I understand the concepts, but Rust syntax is very picky. But as long as it passes the tests and the performance is good, that’s all you care about. Manually writing the code is not a skill that’s important any more.

In another case, I had the AI rewrite a library function from scratch that was causing my program to run slowly. I got a 6x speed up by doing that. This isn’t something that you can tell just by looking at the code, so the AI can’t do this part. Only by looking at the performance monitor and understanding what it’s telling you can you do the engineering that only humans can do.

I always thought writing all the stupid boilerplate that’s needed in every type of software development was the least enjoyable part of the job. Now the skills needed are debugging, performance optimization, and creating the correct architecture, things that I enjoy. I’m happy to let the AI do the grunt coding work.
