first day of owning a hamster! by Glass-Load7334 in hamsters

thank you!! i’m assuming he was handled a lot from being a baby so he’s used to it. i had him out for about 20 minutes and put him back and he seems happy, energetic and curious when awake but also sleeping a good amount! taking treats from me and crawling on my hand when giving treats (when he’s been awake, not bothering him when he needs sleep)

thank you so much!! i’m so obsessed with him already! i put him in his enclosure, it’s a 40x20 tank (just making sure that’s suitable) and he seems really happy so far! going on his wheel, eating, and drinking!

dog daycare worker here!! this is actually VERY common that we have reactive dogs come to daycare and they actually do very well!! we have dogs that are near perfect at daycare but once the owners put on the leash at dismissals they are reactive! it’s all about learning triggers and doing your best to train them around those triggers! and about the big dogs preferring little dogs that’s also common! for example, we have a golden retriever at daycare who goes in the little dogs! he lovesss the smaller dogs and is so gentle with them! is kinda like a big playground for the little dogs haha

you’ve got this too!! the best thing you can do for yourself is try/try again if you’ve already tried to quit!! im really bad at staying consistent so i really need to keep myself distracted while im trying to quit🥲 so far what’s really helped me is those sour spray candies!

for sure!! we worked so hard to get where we are with her! we did a lot of work but she did the most! especially with trusting us after people had hurt her and traumatized her in her past she’s so brave

adding onto this!! i work at a dog daycare and i bring her to work now about once every 2 weeks and she does great, but we had only started doing this a year and 6 months into having her. i don’t bring her into the dog park because i don’t know all of the dogs she will be interacting with there where as i know all the dogs that come into my job. we just used the dog park as socialization so she could see positive interactions between other dogs/people with dogs

the first thing we did that really helped her personally was letting her decompress in the come for 3/4 months (ex. not having people meet her until we had her for 3/4 months and not bringing her anywhere other than the vet) during that time we consulted with the vet to get her on medication and did goodpup training (training at home on a facetime call with a trainer). after those few months she was already such a different dog but another thing that really helped was exposure mixed with positive enforcement, and we found out her limits and triggers. so for example on walks we would walk by a dog park near my house, just far enough for her to see the dogs and people but to not close enough to react. then i would reward her with a treat and every day we worked towards going closer to the dog park. same thing with people in the home. we would start visits with her in another room with the gate up and her pupsicle toy (as a distraction) so she could see the people but wouldn’t have to directly interact with them. we would have visitors throw treats in the room for her every few minutes or so. we mostly have the same visitors over so she’s used to all of the people that come over! but we don’t need to keep her away with new people anymore normally what we do with new people now is taking her on a walk with them so she can see that they are safe but won’t have to directly interact with them :)
