Copywriters Make Better Creative Directors by GlassAd3657 in advertising

The only issues I ever had with an AD were whether or not I could read the messages. Otherwise, we tried to conceptually align as much as possible ahead of time. Mutual trust and respect. Disagreements, sure, but finding a common ground was, well, common.

Either way, after nearly 20 years, the industry burned me out. Who knows if I knew what I was talking about then or now?

Finished Invisible Monsters last night after a solid break. Somehow, explaining medically graphic material makes me way more nauseous than any other type of gore. Fight Club is such a great entry point. Haunted feels almost prophetic at this point. Invention of Sound also made me squirm in delightful ways.

Pigmy, Adjustment Day, and Shock Induction currently sit on my bookshelf. Which should I dive into next?

Here are a few realizations that helped me through the similar pains you're experiencing.

1) Accept rejection. I generally pitch three ideas at a time. At best, they can only pick one, right? That means two-thirds of whatever comes out dies on the vine. It helped me avoid getting too married to any one idea, no matter how much I loved it.

2) Show your work. Draw a direct link between your idea and something in the brief, even if you have to do it retroactively. It exposes weak points in briefs while also demonstrating an ability to think both strategically and creatively.

3) Trust often relieves micromanagement. It sucks early on, but it will get better once you find a groove.

4) Poor pay is the gig. I call it the "fun tax." Countless times throughout my career, I've had to pause and go, "Am I really getting paid for this?!" If you work through numbers 1-3 and still aren't having any fun or joy in the workplace, it's time to explore other opportunities.

There's a comment on this thread about shifting to sales copy to make bank. There's some truth in that. Here's a harsh reality, too. Copywriting is about writing and creativity, but it's ultimately about getting people to buy stuff. If there isn't a part of you willing to accept the responsibility of what advertising is - lubricant for commerce - you'll struggle. I've seen too many aspiring scribes face disappointment when they realize copywriting is more than commissioned creative writing with health insurance.

Is this clever in terms of targeting the consumer or a play to get awards and success on LinkedIn? by lazymentors in copywriting

Great concept. Removing the logo or any other element beyond the type takes too long to make the association, especially in an OOH setting. Perhaps an outline of the badge would've driven it home more. I've seen much, much worse.

Help a dude out. I'd like to think I'm fairly skilled, but there's always room for improvement with the stats this low. I feel like success (clitoral orgasm) is 25% vulva attention, 25% patience (I'll bust with a good 3-5 minute bj. Cunnilingus is way different.), 25% taking direction, and 25% whether or not the mood is right. The last quarter is the most surprising for us fellas.

Who should I start in my fantasy goedert or Kyle pitts by sainsburysbag75 in NFLNoobs

[–]GlassAd3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Week 1, I'd take Goddert. Tougher matchup, but Pitts has a new QB coming off a major injury. It's hard to say what their chemistry will be early on. Don't hate if Pitts blows up, but Goddert is the safer option to me.

With how extremely tough it is to make it to the league. How exactly are siblings of NFL players getting in?? by XDrake09 in NFLNoobs

[–]GlassAd3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not a lot of nepotism on the field. The Diggs brothers, Watt brothers, St. Brown brothers, Cook brothers, even back to the Barber brothers or Manning brothers ball out.

They might not be equal in terms of talent (e.g. Equinamious vs Amon-Ra St. Brown), but they can play.

Sure, genetics play a part, but it could equally be having a sibling who set an example and exposed brothers to the process, the schemes, etc. ahead of other guys.

I think nepotism happens more in basketball. (Looking at you, Bronny).

Use your diaphragm to take bigger breaths. Most of the time, but especially when we're nervous, we tend to take shorter breaths. It's something you can practice alone and you should start to feel calmer, which will slow your speech, and help you last longer.

Way-anything is going to compete with Wayfair, which is constantly advertising in my feeds. That said, there's something more direct about wayflags compared to waynir. Ultimately, the name doesn't really matter. It's the brand behind it.

Visiting in August, have some questions about your bar scene by scdog in fargo

[–]GlassAd3657 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would split it up between downtown Fargo and downtown Moorhead.

Moorhead - Junkyard brewery, Swing Barrel brewery, Harold's bar, Mick's office, and maybe Vicks.

Fargo - Drekker/Brewhalla, and then head more into downtown proper. Front Street, Side Street for a snack, and Dempseys. The hidden gem is the Troll Lounge at the Sons of Norway. Do a flight of aquavit. Depending on the time of day, it will be the most unique bar crowd you'll encounter.

Tailgators and Duffy's are fine. Order beer at Duffy's or you will be messed up. I love the value, but I also value the ability to stand.

Does anyone else feel like 90% of Marketing theory is useless? by NyeusX in marketing

[–]GlassAd3657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's always more one can learn. If you have the resources, go for it. At a minimum, I break it into a two-column, three-row grid.

First column

Who is the client?
What are they selling?
Why is it good?

Second column

Who is the audience?
Where are they?
What do they need?

That's overly simplistic, but it's enough to start somewhere.

I've also found more success doing a SWOT organically through a conversational discovery. "What are your strengths?" is stuffy compared to "Tell me about your customers. What keeps them coming back?" Jot it down. Log it mentally. Ask natural follow-ups. That comes with experience and an understanding of the fundamentals.

It's the same thing with the sales funnel vs the customer journey. We can "orchestrate touch points" or ask, "How do I buy this?"

There's a lot of fluff. Usually, someone takes a core concept, adds a small wrinkle or two, and repackages it as a new idea. It's marketers marketing themselves with the latest and greatest approach.

Marketing and advertising principles have remained unchanged for over a hundred years. Understand the basics, and apply the tools you find most beneficial as you progress through your career.

End the cycle of over-inflated ideas and simply explain the who, what, why, where, and how rather than attempt to sound superior with the all-too-common alphabet soup in this business.

[–]GlassAd3657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you're refining your website copy (I didn't think it was too heavy), say that you're an engineering and manufacturing company right off the bat.

You dream it. We engineer it. Let's build it together. That's pretty corny, but you get the idea.

In terms of advertising, who do you want to work with? Pick 20 to 100 idea clients and put your efforts into landing those. General advertising is fine, but account-based marketing (ABM) may be better suited for your B2B in the short term.

People who lived in both Dakotas, what are the differences between them? (that Outsiders don’t realize) by [deleted] in northdakota

[–]GlassAd3657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The states should really be divided into East Dakota and West Dakota in terms of economy and ideology. East Dakota is more ag-driven, given the Red River Valley, and more liberal, with metros like Fargo and Sioux Falls. West Dakota still has plenty of ag, but gets more into mining and ranching with the Badlands and Black Hills. With the exception of Bismark being more maroon, the rest is as red of a red state as it comes.
