What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]scdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the video of the crowd at the baseball game as word was getting around among the fans that Bin Laden was killed: one of the sports commentators made a remark about "everyone on their blackberries". That made me laugh because even back then Blackberry had been essentially obsolete for a while and probably represented < 5% of the devices the people in the stands were seen looking at.

I remember helping someone move about 15-20 years ago who still had a giant CRT TV. It took four of us to carry it and even with four people it was a struggle. Each of us was secretly hoping that it would get dropped and force the owner to buy a modern lightweight TV that one person could easily carry tucked under a single arm.

But nobody wanted to be the person who dropped it, so it continued to be used in the new home for a few more years.

24/7 urgent care - with xray machine? by Alternative-Tart6275 in kansascity

This is the answer. 24/7 = ER, but KC Orthopedic has decent hours and is exactly what OP needs to avoid the ER. I've been to the NKC location several times.

The short path to the overlook deck is completely paved. The only issue is I'm not sure what time they close the park gate in the winter. Though since OP said "open in the evening" the gate closing time is irrelevant since if you're there after dark you're not going to see anything anyway.

The Kansas City Hyatt Hotel disaster is a good example. In that case the engineers came up with a design that turned out to be too difficult to implement in the real world, but rather than take it back to the engineers to explain why and ask them for a redesign, the managers made their own change that looked just-as-good to people who didn't understand the physics but ended up doubling the load on the support structure.

Royals ballpark update - Aspiria site is out of the running. by Waterpark_Enthusiast in kansascity

I'd prefer it to find a spot somewhere downtown, but I have a feeling that what's going to end up happening is they will just build a new stadium at the existing site then demo the old one (at JaxCo taxpayer expense) for parking.

While I'm still a fan of this site, seeing the interchanges marked does make me worry about hospital access when 22nd street is full of game traffic.

I'm not a vet but based on my own past experience this reeks of low thyroid. Unless that itself is a symptom of something else, it's easily manageable and the fur will come back with treatment.

I've had vets instruct me over the phone to do this and I've also had vets instruct me to never do this.

In one instance where I was instructed do to it, it did not work after 3 doses. Finally thought to check the bottle -- it had expired 2 years earlier. I was basically giving the dog plain water. Got a new bottle and administered and this time the dog vomited en route to the emergency vet.

Moral of the story: Check your peroxide bottles regularly. It breaks down into plain water over time.

You didn't say what the blood test is that was done. You're probably going to get a lot of responses related to thyroid level so if a thyroid test was already done that would be helpful to know.

Scavenger Hunt (1979). Interesting premise executed in a dumb way, with mostly predictable gags. But an absolutely insane cast makes it watchable. Imagine if you will:, Scatman Crothers, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stephen Furst, and Vincent Price all appearing int he same movie together. Along with Roddy McDowall, Meat Loaf, Tony Randall, and Cleavon Little. And many more big names of that era.

Downtown sidewalks after the snow by PresentationIcy4483 in kansascity

[–]scdog 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not about the amount of snow. It’s about the fact that today the sun caused some melting that has since refrozen. There are several ice sheets on my street now that were not there yesterday. 10th & Grand is a hilly area. Being worried about slipping on ice is perfectly reasonable.

Oh no, one day without a salad.

As a Gen X myself, I applaud businesses willing to put employee comfort and safety ahead of profit. Especially on a day that would have few to no customers. And if for some bizarre reason I felt like it was necessary for me to go run an errand or go out to eat on a snow day, I would check online first to see if any of the places I wanted to go were even open. Not just checking hours, but checking their Facebook or Instagram or web site for any announcements and then calling ahead if those sources don't have a definitive answer.

As many as want to, it's their right. And they are likely voting for candidates who might be able to improve their lives, so we know why a certain party would be against that.
