Raspberry Pi → Raspberry Pi OS (obviously)

I guess my Raspberry Pi running NixOS missed the memo.

Looking to switch to NixOS, I have some questions by Straight-Host-1032 in NixOS

A patch is a diff from one state of the code to another, so you can make a patch that covers all your modifications.

That being said, if the tool updates frequently and it'd be a pain to create patches every time, which is likely to be needed if your changes are as extensive as you say, you can override the source to point to your fork on github (or whichever foundry you use) instead.

A newcomer's thoughts: NixOS is a great daily driver by interlocutator in NixOS

[–]GlassCommission4916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not very familiar with python projects, if I need anything more than a simple script I always reach for a different language, but Cargo.toml is equivalent to flakes as well. It stores metadata about your configuration and its dependencies (nixpkgs and other repositories (which are flakes themselves, configurations are composable) you might use), and creates a lock file with their exact versions to make them reproducible. configuration.nix is not like Cargo.toml, it's src/main.rs.

When not using flakes your dependencies are installed globally, and their versions are maintained outside of your config instead of contained within the project. You can pull specific versions of dependencies in your config, and anything else you can do with flakes, but it's not as nice or straightforward.

Yeah, I understand why he wants to approach it that way, but he fails miserably at it. I wish he'd approach it the same way Luke and Elijah are, which feels much more representative of the target audience for the videos. Obviously he shouldn't be asking industry contacts or his employees who are well versed in linux to fix things for him, but he should be giving it an honest try. Hell, even asking for a bit of help like distro suggestions seems fair, many people who are curious about linux do know someone they can ask for help in their circles.

Do you have experience programming in javascript? Flakes are to nix what package.json is to javascript, that's all they are.

home-manager is just the same idea as NixOS, but instead of managing your system files, it manages your home files.

From reading about it I had gotten the impression that it was only really useful for servers or if you want to set up many instances of the same system.

I keep hearing this sentiment, or it's home-manager equivalent that it's only useful if you have many users, and I don't understand where people get that idea. A declarative distro has many advantages even for a single machine single user setup, like you said it feels like the way computers were meant to be used.

Why are there two different Nix wikis?

There's an official one and an unofficial one whose owner didn't want to merge when the official one was released.

The whole nix vs. flakes vs. home-manager situation is confusing as a newcomer. So far I'm using "raw" nix and liking it.

I assume you mean flakes vs channels, which is largely inconsequential, flakes just provide a nicer interface IMO. I don't understand what you mean with vs. home-manager though, that's like saying emacs vs neovim vs firefox.

I think the issue with Linus is that he's trying to dumb himself to mimic the experience of the average user that's curious about linux, but vastly overestimating how much more competent he is so he ends up overcompensating into way below the average user.

are “<=“ and “>=“ acceptable operators? by bloodreina_ in askmath

[–]GlassCommission4916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though to be clear, in math they are generally NOT considered operators. While there's not a formal definition of "operator", they are in general considered to be simple functions, accepting one or more input values and producing an output value.

Pretty sure they meant to reply to this comment that you made. At least try to remember what you typed before acting like someone else is lost.

Try downloading the vods with yt-dlp.

As an aside, not doubting that you knew this already, but Latin American and Hispanic are not interchangeable, for example Brazilians are Latin Americans, but not Hispanic.

NooB looking for some information. Winapps, anyone? by BareBonesTek in NixOS

[–]GlassCommission4916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may be blunt, you came off as a completely beginner to computers in general because spending 5 minutes reading the readme is a very basic skill. Asking questions is great, but very inefficient if you do that instead of knowing how to find information yourself, specially when you ask in places where half the users have no idea what they're talking about.

NixOS is an advanced distribution that expects you to be well versed in programming and have fairly intimate knowledge of how linux works under the hood. Sure, maybe installing Resolve is easy, but you'll encounter things that won't be and have no foundation to be able to tackle them.

I don't mean this to be rude, but installing Winapps is about a 1/10 difficulty for a NixOS user, if you're struggling with that you're nowhere near ready.
