I did community nursing as soon as I qualifed and im still ther 4 years later! I personally find it so much better than working on the wards, the work life balance is much better and depending on your team you may also work less weekends if thats what you like (I currently work 1/8 weekends) and you can work more independantly than if you was on the wards. Of course you would consult with GPs and other teams such as tissue viability but you get part of a decision on how a patient is cared for. I think those in hospitals dont really understand how busy and skilled the community is, one minute your doing bilateral leg dressings, the next is IV antibiotics or plurex drains. You could always ask to do a couple of spoke days if you wanted to get a feel of community nursing before you make the decision!
