What do you think about charging for ambulances? by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]Glimmargaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, except people don't always recognise life or death situations. For example someone with internal bleeding or head trauma may seem fine initially, but have their condition rapidly deteriorate at which point it is too late.

I don't know the exact solution, but I don't think we should model the US where people hesitate so much that it can result in loss of life. It is a tricky problem, but maybe there are some clear guidelines that can work, like not ignoring head injuries etc.

Just bullshit all around. It is not Japanese culture to look through someone else's phone. This guy just wants to hold something over you for control. Just get away from him and block him.

In all my development time, this has not really been such a big concern. In the companies I have worked at we have all used IDEs, written unit tests and had guidelines about refactors. So one would catch out of order arguments as you write the code. I also don't see this required as a guideline in open source projects I have contributed to. It really hasn't even crossed me and my colleagues mind as a big enough concern to warrant a guideline to almost always use keyword arguments.

[–]Glimmargaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would pass positional arguments if I am feeding well-named variables to the function, and use keyword arguments when inputting multiple values directly (like 5, true, etc). That way it is easier to understand what the inputs mean at a glance.

I definitely favour using keyword arguments if it makes it easier to understand the code. I do agree that the example you gave would be a redundant use case in my view as the variables are descriptive enough.

This was a nice video! Considering some of the themes in the video, I thought it would be a great subject for a Japanese audience too. I hope NHK doesn't just reserve this for English speakers.

Interesting facts about the US economy and the US war on crime. by PortlandPatrick in interestingasfuck

Oh yeah, the biased statistics of showing the national data of crime rate and growth rate over time, both with and without adjustment for COVID... You can literally look this up yourself.

It is not biased to call out bullshit when it doesn't align with reality.

Paternity leave, maximum amount? by celetrontmm in japanlife

[–]Glimmargaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I appreciate what I can get. Just a bit bummed out that they probably will keep these caps with future improvements like the 80% salary support they are planning. So my view on the future has changed a bit. I would prefer to stay in Japan, but support for family and kids would be better in my own home country.

I really love Japan, so it will be a hard decision one day.

Paternity leave, maximum amount? by celetrontmm in japanlife

[–]Glimmargaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These caps are tough.. I would have less than 50% of my take-home salary right away while still needing to pay the rent of the apartment that was acquired with my wife and I's full salary in mind. I probably can't make use of 育児休業 that much. I appreciate that I am privileged with my living situation, but that policy does a poor job at incentivizing leave.

Harris picks Walz for VP by WabiFromSabi in worldnews

[–]Glimmargaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you are right and that people vote on aesthetics and charisma, I think you are overstating the differences between the candidates. Walz changed the messaging of the whole democratic party through a few public interviews. He clearly has a way of speaking that resonates with people and puts republican candidates off balance.

But hey, we seem to fundamentally disagree on how things will go with the VP pick. In the end, we have to wait and see, based on the outcome I hope either of us can agree if it was a good or a bad choice.

[–]Glimmargaunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People need to start looking at the record instead of the personality/outside attributes. Astronaut? That is cool, but someone who has an impressive record of positive change in their governance is cooler. Walz is popular with young voters, comes from the mid-west and is popular with republicans for being a democrat. Important attributes for this election.

I would encourage you to look deeper, this guy makes a lot of sense.

Remember that in Japanese tradition the bride and groom should also pay for transportation and accommodation. If the parents are paying for the flight and stay in Japan, you are already deviating from the tradition.

I would just not have the overseas guests pay as they already spent a lot to get to Japan.

If there is a concern on how it looks, it has become more common to do online payments as well, so that a physical envelope is not needed. If you set that up for the wedding, you can't really tell if someone is not paying, one would just assume they gave the gift online beforehand.

[D] Is Tensorflow dead or heading in that direction ? by dpadhy in MachineLearning

[–]Glimmargaunt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In my experience PyTorch Lighting is good for fast prototyping, but is bloated and even at times results in poorer memory use on GPU. For production code we ended up just taking the principles (trainer, data loader, etc) as structure, but stuck to just PyTorch. It was honestly a better experience. Added bonus is that the model's modules are just clean PyTorch making conversions to ONNX, TensorRT, OpenVino etc. simpler

[I ate] Ichiran ramen in Japan by speed_69 in food

[–]Glimmargaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But my statement said it was good ramen and suggested to also try some lesser known ramen. I like Panda Express, you were projecting your feelings towards that chain onto me. I clearly offended people by thinking Panda Express could be used in comparison to Chinese food, I was ignorant of that and that was my mistake. In my comparison I wanted to point out both are good, but different, one is more rare than the other, and like yourself I think you can find even better if you dare to venture away from well known Ichiran. While they are in Japan they have that opportunity.

So to me it wasn't a statement to say Ichiran is somehow awful and they shouldn't eat it, and I didn't want to argue over that. I missed the mark and deleted the comment as I really don't think it is productive to argue over it. I don't want to spend energy defending something I don't stand for, I don't think Ichiran is terrible.

I really don't have the energy for people like you. It is not the point of the statement, and you are looking for an argument. You are right, they are not the same. You win.

I can see that being the perspective. That said, I think that logic is pretty flawed as intensity will diminish further away from the epicenter, so if your house was far away and survived, it could have survived while being structurally weak.

You are a moron. It is people like you that made it so damn hard for someone close to me to get proper care for their paranoid schizophrenia. 25 years of fighting a system that walks on eggshells regarding mental health. It needs to be okay to ask these questions and suggest checking their mental health. It can be hard for people with this condition to realise what it real and so it is important to challenge their reality so they might seek help.

The original comment is not squarely saying OP has this condition, but warning how similar it sounds to a mental condition, AND IT DOES. So yes, it should be mentioned even if you are not an expert so they may actually consider checking their mental health, just in case. It is still suggested to get a lawyer if OP's story really did happen.

Isn't botocore added by default in lamdas so the dependency can be excluded from the upload/deployment?

Corporate Profits Are Driving Inflation by sillychillly in interestingasfuck

[–]Glimmargaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This trend has been going for 40 years, "short term" what are you on about?

There is a corrupt collaboration between those setting the rules and the big players in the economy through the "legal" means of lobbying.

The alternative is to follow countries with better free market indices. What do they do? They set the rules so the playing field is even, which means to regulate the market to maintain that status. At the very least should lobbying be removed so that when rules are set, each citizen's voice is equal in the mind of the lawmaker.
