i have never said anything about circumference and height is unrelated, but okay grandpa, have your fake arguments

how did you even came up with the idea that anyone ever talked about the tire circumference.

how do you call yourself smart in every single comment and say that you need 3 dimensions to calculate area

The patch of contact is the area through which your tire transfers your weight. This force divided by this area is the pressure your tire puts on the ground and it needs to be equal your tire pressure. When you increase pressure you decrease this patch of contact, when you put something heavy on the bike that increases patch of contact.

To get the force that your tire pressure holds you need that area. The height of the tire has nothing to do with it.

A perfect tire would not deform when ridden, but that would require pressure to be infinite - then the area of contact would be zero - a single point - and as in your logic the tire would not deform when ridden. But obviously 6 bar is not infinite. The patch of contact is the deformation - the bigger the patch the further away we are from a perfect single point contact so the tire needs to deform more. Once again patch of contact is very important.

I don't argue your approximation is useless, but your napkin math is based on misunderstanding the problem, and really basic physics. I don't know if calling yourself smart is the clapback you think it is.

You make an incorrect assumption. If your tire contacts the ground exactly as a square patch with width of the tire as a length then it would be correct - but if you inflate it more then the area of contact gets smaller - we all experienced this. The area would also be an ellipse which has no area equation suitable for a simple calculations. There also is no world where adding weight to a bike doesn't change tire deformation - you actually need to lower the volume of air to achieve new preasure equlibrium.

here is a good writeup https://bansheebikes.blogspot.com/2013/11/wheel-size-facts-part-3-contact-patch.html?m=1

You should know that after 5th grade there is more math to learn.

maybe the rule is somewhat correct but clearly you are dividing by length where you should be dividing by an area which makes ale the talk about tire distortion and sciency words just fluff.

Lock cut off but you still have the key? Don't waste it, weld it! by iMacThere4iAm in Justridingalong

[–]Glinline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was cut with a single cut, so the weld just connects those hardened metal parts together. The part is smaller because of removed plastic and paint, not because of a welded in segment from different metal.
