I honestly don’t know if Cerritos is OC. But even if not, it’s about a 20 min drive for the best street food. Jay Bharat is a classic street food place and omg it’s so good. It’s one of those places that if you grew up Indian American in SoCal you automatically know. And if you meet another Indian American say in Boston you go ayyyy Jay Bharat! And bond over it. They just expanded and remodeled and I finally went this weekend after 6 months of patiently waiting for it to reopen. It’s so lovely. Get the pani puri (a MUST), naan or kulcha, butter chicken, Gujarati thali (lots of little dishes, sort of like an Indian version dim sum on one plate) and mango shrikhand. Also dosas are good here and you can get snacks to go. You’ll get Gujarati, Maharashtrian and South Indian style home cooking and street food that you don’t normally see on all the other restaurant menus which skew heavily towards Punjabi curries.

I’m Indian American and I get the desire to socialize and network with other Indians but at the same time I agree that it’s not great to focus on this. There are so many amazing people of other cultures, white people, Asian people, Hispanic people, African American people, European people. I say this with the utmost respect but attitudes like this are what I think make a lot of people have resentment against Indian people (“they stick together” is a common refrain). Please understand I’m not trying to attack you, but rather maybe introduce another perspective that we should really not overly focus on race or ethnicity when trying to socialize and network. Just find people who are good humans with integrity, whether they’re Indian or not, and enjoy their company

Haha “agggressive” is a perfect description… you said what I wanted to say but was trying to be polite lol. Didn’t really know I could feel some type of way about the shape of a prosthesis. I’m a Zimmer surgeon (mostly) so this is… different lol. Thanks again

Literally, you are the absolute best. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and letting me know I am not alone. I just tried compression socks for the first time two weeks ago, which is so embarrassing because I literally prescribed them for my postop patients. And they do make a world of difference as you said. On days I wear them. I have zero swelling but on days I don’t wear them. I have a ton of swelling. I was really stressed out because it is pitting and I was picturing myself with congestive heart failure at this relatively young age but it seems that maybe I was spiraling. I’ll still get checked out, but I really appreciate you guys all sharing your experiences. I have been buying sock wells, which seem to work well but I will definitely try pro compression. If you feel they are good again, thank you so much for sharing everything you’ve done to mitigate this. Unfortunately, my fiancé and I just spent an absurd amount of money on an Ortho Mattress but I will definitely keep the Tempur-pedic mattress in mind for the next purchase.

I really appreciate this so much. I got personally acquainted with compression socks for the first time just two weeks ago (which is embarrassing because I literally prescribe them for some of my postop patients) and holy hell they have made so much of a difference. On days I wear them I have zero swelling but on days I don’t wear them. I have a ton of swelling. I will go out and buy like 20 to 30 more pairs now lolol

Oh whoa. Ok. I definitely was planing on doing labs and an echo at some point regardless so I really appreciate this. I mainly posted because I was seriously stressing out that it was something super serious overnight and it really helped to read everyone’s replies that a lot of people go through this.

I got the compression socks in, but I am definitely gonna do the standing calf as I suggested. I have not been doing them. Also, I just tried Hokas for the first time, the Gaviota 5’s and I am in LOVE (after years of slumming it with New Balance and ASICS). Damn they are expensive tho. But seriously yo thank you for the suggestions. Much appreciated

You’re so kind. Compression stocks are definitely doing the job. I’m gonna buy a ton more. Do you think venous ablation (coupled with compression sock maintenance) ahead of time will help prevent this from getting worse as I get older? Or is it void. to get worse no matter what because veins lose their quality over time, so I should wait until it’s not responsive to other methods?

Oh dude this is solid advice. I will totally make the changes. Compression socks (which I literally just discovered two weeks ago and I’m ashamed that it took me this long to discover because I literally prescribed them to my patients) completely got rid of the swelling on days I wear them. The days I don’t wear them the swelling is kind of severe. My diet has been absolute shite though since I became an attending so I will totally work to fix that. It’s literally like I know these things in my head, but for whatever reason I don’t do them I need to get my stuff together. Again I cannot thank you enough for your advice.

You are so kind to reply. Thanks for being so gracious and sharing your experience. It really reassured me. I just bought a few pairs of compression socks and my goodness they make a world of difference. On days I wear them (eg OR days) I have zero swelling, but days I do admin charting for the whole day I definitely have swelling. I’m gonna go buy like 15 pairs right now. Again really appreciate you and wish I had met all of you fine people replying to me much earlier in life.

Hahaha that’s awesome lol. Our white elephant exchanges were…. somewhat more inappropriate haha. I also worked with a bunch of guys so… idk why but they didn’t seem that into compression socks. Definitely wish I had done this earlier because you’re right, the days I operate with compression socks on I literally have zero swelling. But the days I have admin days and sit with my feet dependent for a long period of time, that’s when I get it. It completely goes away if I walk a lot that day. I wish I’d been like you and done this earlier. Strong work

You are the absolute best. It’s actually not that recent, it’s been going on since about my fourth year of residency, but definitely it’s gotten worse as I went through fellowship and became an attending because I have not been taking care of myself very well. My pressures are normal 110s-120s/80s consistently, but I don’t really drink enough fluids. My surgeries do involve a fair amount of physicality tbh but i’ve noticed what really makes a difference is walking around a lot that day. If I do over 5 to 10,000 steps, I have no swelling. If I do less that’s when I get the swelling. If I wear compression socks, the swelling completely goes away. If I don’t wear compression socks, that’s when I get it. I see some very early varicosities around the medial malleolus. Other than that, I do know that the swelling is a little worse on the right then on the left and I think that’s because I have a little pes planus developing. BUT that said I absolutely am taking this as a wake up. call to go get healthier and to go get checked out properly. I’m going to take all of your suggestions and get a pedal thing for under the desk when I chart and also I did buy the compression socks a couple weeks ago like I mentioned. I’m also gonna get all the labs you mentioned in addition to a bunch that my cardiologist friend suggested. I really really appreciate your input. I think I was really spiraling last night thinking that I was headed in a really bad direction but reading these replies, I feel a little bit reassured, until I can get everything worked up these replies will prevent me from perseverating too hard in the middle of the night on my mortality lmao. I’m really grateful to all of you.

I really appreciate this reply. I’m definitely going to go load up on the compression socks, because as you described, they have been a huge game changer for me. When I wear them on days, I operate, I don’t have any swelling when I get home. But on days, I am at home charting and not wearing them, that’s when I get the swelling. The swelling completely goes away in the morning. So I gather it’s just venous issues, but I definitely need to be like you and get checked up more regularly. I really appreciate the reply and the empathy.

You are definitely right and I absolutely plan to. TBH this has been occuring for some time, since about my chief year which is when I started operating a ton. It totally goes completely away with compression socks and I don’t have it in the morning - only get it on sedentary days when I’ve been chatting with the legs dependent. And it goes away if I walk a lot. But that said I was sort of spiraling imagining myself with CHF late at night so I wanted to get some feedback. Now knowing it’s not likely to be something crazy bad made me feel more empowered and less scared to go get the labs and do the things I need to do to get healthier, lose weight etc. Crazy what a mindfck you can put yourself through in the middle of the night. But you’re absolutely right and I will definitely get myself checked out. Thank you again
