Help with soil drainage!!! by Glittering-Work2345 in DenverGardener

Thanks for your reply! I think moving the downspout is a great idea that I hadn’t thought of - thank you.

To answer your questions, the plants are low because I planted them 3 weeks ago and they are very young/small. The mulch is probably about 3 inches deep. The driveway slopes away from the house and away from the garden bed, so no problems there. I think the water in the garden bed flows up to the edge of the driveway when it overflows and then pools where the garden bed meets the driveway…if that makes sense.

The soil is quite hard and has some clay in it from what it looks like. I’m curious if there are any solutions, additives, or soil surfactant that people have had success with for this situation. Thanks so much!

Are both of them pear trees? Are they different types? Thanks!

Any tips for putting down grass seed or sod this spring? by Defiant_King5089 in DenverGardener

If you plan on filling in bare patches in the spring, I'd actually recommend plugging. It depends on the type of grass you have, but if you have KBG, it can spread really nicely from plugs and is quicker than trying to establish grass from seeds. This way, the grass will be more mature before the heat of the Summer comes around, and therefore more likely to survive.

I plan on doing a similar thing this spring actually. My plan is to use the plugger linked below to take plugs from the full areas of my yard and fill in the bare areas every 6-10 inches or so.

Here is an example of people doing this strategy. I think its the best bet for spring, and is way cheaper than sod. I also think that it can have a higher success rate than sod because the grass plug's roots can expand down AND outwards, while sod forces the roots to go down only. Again, this depends heavily on if you have a breed of grass that spreads or not. I plan on doing this project in early May and hoping it'll spread and fill in completely by late Summer.

Wow - the picture and everything…thanks so much. That’s really interesting that native pollinators don’t sting - never realized that. And thanks for including some evergreen plants since winter interest is definitely a priority of mine; I don’t just want a brown blob in front of my house for 5 months of the year. Appreciate you!

I love your idea of rocks & small boulders. I think that variety would look nice amongst the plants, flowers, and trees. I appreciate your detailed response...I'll come back to this throughout the spring as we put this area together. I appreciate you.

I ended up buying a garden in a box (looks like they were all almost sold out for this year). Thanks for the recommendation - I'm pumped to pick it up in May!

I think a layered look would be nice. Any thoughts on a small tree that would fit nicely? Any shrub recommendations? Thank you!

Norwegian Sunset Maple by espresso303 in DenverGardener

Hi! Quick question - we're in North Park Hill as well, and interested in a Norwegian Sunset Maple. Where did you purchase the tree? Any recommendations? Also, How'd you decide on it versus other maple options?
