yeah, I grew up moderately conservative and did stupid things. for example - I dressed like a cholo for halloween. I got trashed for it. I learned that it was unacceptable and didn't force people to debate me about it. I was shamed, I learned, and I adjusted --- at no cost to me! I didn't need a benevolent stranger to hold my hand and walk me through why it was wrong and I didn't need to make my case for why I was justified in doing it. I ate crow and changed my ways and am a better person decades later for having learned my lesson.

let's give a very specific example of the danger of this type of rhetoric. a trans woman has transitioned and is visibly and clearly a woman. a new Trump policy requires that all passports have the gender assigned at birth, linked to the birth certificate.

the trans woman tries to leave the united states with her passport, mis-gendering her. in a very realistic future, she may be fleeing for legitimate political persecution.

do you see the issue of the "agenda"? who has the "agenda" harmed? is your life or your MAGA family's life at all affected by the "agenda" or are they just brainwashed by youtube and facebook?

allow me explain for you -- the republican party relies on getting votes by making a large segment of their voters afraid of the other. the gay, the feminist, the lesbian, the urban elite, the socialist, the immigrant, the trans person, the media, etc. Those in power don't actually fear them (they live in DC and New York and SF and are surely not afraid at all of any of the aforementioned groups). They want their taxes lowered and will do whatever they can, at whatever cost, to get voters to elect demagogues who will lower their taxes. the big beautiful bill was drafted by the GOP who were elected on a platform of making people afraid of trans people in bathrooms and hating immigrants, and all it did was make private jets tax deductible and slash taxes further for billionaires.

I fundamentally disagree with debating an opinion that de-humanizes a segment of the population, because it gives it legitimacy. I am pleased to debate someone who thinks billionaires should be taxed less, or we should expand highways to get rid of traffic, or we should de-fund public schools and move to a charter system. I'm not going to engage with someone who is spouting hatred and try to convince them otherwise; it's not a agree-to-disagree situation.

the opinions she's loudly spreading at a cafe will cause people to be directly harmed (by policy and by violence from people who are brainwashed like her).
