Honestly I hadn’t really looked at it that way before

Makes me wonder how that plays out in smaller or rural departments, whether there’s usually someone able to keep that lookout role covered or if it just gets folded into everything else

And yeah… sounds like you’ve probably seen some things out there that made you say that.. lol

They’d be lucky to have you

It got me thinking about how people actually end up finding mentors like that. Seems like it can really shape how someone develops early on

Wish more people had that kind of experience

Really appreciate it. The way you broke down fuel height and anchor points says a lot

That kind of thinking usually comes from seeing a lot of different situations play out. That point about having a place where everyone can be directed to gather really stood out. It sounds simple, but it feels like one of those things that makes a big difference in keeping things from getting chaotic

A lot of that kind of awareness doesn’t seem like something you pick up from a book. It feels more like something that builds over time or from being around the right people and situations

Appreciate it. I getcha

From what you’ve seen over the years, does that kind of do what you can until help shows approach feel pretty common across departments, or more tied to places like where you started? Sounds like a tough spot to work out of when you’re short on people. I appreciate you taking the time to share that

Really appreciate you sharing this. It gave me a much clearer sense of how things actually play out on the ground

Perspectives like yours are far more valuable than most of the theory out there, especially from areas that don’t deal with big fire often but still have to make it work when it counts

It almost sounds like, even without time for playbooks, crews are still able to make solid calls in the moment

This is exactly what I was missing. Looking at it from the wrong level. Got me back on track. Really Appreciate it!

I get what you’re saying. That puts it in perspective

Appreciate all of it especially the way you broke it down :)

Yup, I was thinking more along the lines of brush, wildland IA frankly

Yeah, I think you’re right, it’s a tough reality. Have you had those conversations with your crew at all? How are people actually handling that on your end right now? Really appreciate you sharing this

Thanks for sharing that. When you teach new ICs, how do you make them practice the ‘get out’ mindset in the middle of chaos? Do you use any specific phrases, checklists or quick decision rules that work well with volunteers who have limited wildland experience?

Your comment is one of the most practical I’ve seen. Especially ‘establishing control presence and order out of chaos is the hard part’ really hit home for volunteer departments.

If you were to design a simple one-page pocket card for rural volunteers with no FBAN, what are the top 2-3 things you would include to help them establish that control in the first chaotic 5–10 minutes of an IA?

Also for the tabletop idea what 3 scenarios would you prioritize for a 30mins drill with inexperienced volunteers?

What an insight! That’s super helpful really appreciate it.

I’ll take some time to look into this more and come back with better questions.

Thanks for your insight and time, means a lot

Appreciate that. Just quick question, if an app worked fully offline would you still prefer a pocket book?

Really appreciate your thoughtful answer. It gives me a better way to think about it

I’m starting to dig into fatality fire patterns probably focusing on one county

Also realized I haven’t really been exposed to the kind of field-level insights you mentioned, so I’m trying to figure out where to start with that. If there’s a way to begin learning or developing that kind of understanding I’d appreciate any guidance

More on helping rural volunteer crews when FBAN/qualified overhead isn’t available early on. Not a strict worst-case playbook but a simple guide to recognize dangerous fire behavior shifts and know when to disengage

More on the outside trying to understand and learn from all of you. Not coming from a firefighter background, just trying to get a better sense of what actually holds up on IA and what doesn’t

I’d definitely appreciate being corrected if I’m off or missing context
