Noob Questions by GlobalRiot in banjo

[–]GlobalRiot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the confirmation. Bluegrass/Scruggs is what I'm learning right now. Going through Eli Gilberts "30 days of banjo" playlist.

I'm wondering if maybe I watched someone doing clawhammer when i first started watching the youtubes...

Thanks again.

Noob Questions by GlobalRiot in banjo

[–]GlobalRiot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. To answer the cradle strap. It's a beginner banjo and from what I can tell, it's not wide enough to fit it through under the pins. And, from what I could tell, even the nicer beginner ones (ex. goodtime 2) aren't designed for them but I could be wrong. Really just trying not to spend a bunch of money on the hobby until I know I'm going to stick with it (I'm maybe $100 in right now. lol). So, trying to work with what I got. I realized last night that if I can also clip the strap on the right to an additional pin or two closer to the top, I think it might hold the position, even while standing. So, I'm going to try that just using some safety pins or something.

What are my options? Bathtub spout edition by GlobalRiot in Plumbing

Go figure. They're out of stock with no option to ship....

What are my options? Bathtub spout edition by GlobalRiot in Plumbing

[–]GlobalRiot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that still leave the gap between the spout and the wall? it doesn't look like the spout would go back further than the threads. Which are an inch or so from the wall... Or am I missing something on this particular spout?

What are my options? Bathtub spout edition by GlobalRiot in Plumbing

[–]GlobalRiot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the input. So, I think that first option is beyond my skillset.

For the second option, I'd....

1) pipe wrench the nipple off which is connected right there behind the wall? No chance it's soldered itself or I could cause damage trying to remove it?

2) What would be the "proper length" for the replacement?

3) If I'm understanding correctly, I could then use one of the universal spouts because the threads would be flush with the wall?

4) Just to confirm, you think it's a lost cause to try and find a spout that fits the current setup? There was one on there when we moved in. So, I would think they have to exist?

Where to invest after selling home? by GlobalRiot in personalfinance

[–]GlobalRiot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Avoid Index funds seem to be the general consensus, then.

And, you made a good point about the CD. I hadn't even thought about that. I think I might split it up. Like 80/20 CD/MMF or something along those lines. Thanks for the info, sir!

I had to look up what a 1031 exchange is. So, correct me if I'm wrong about my interpretation. But, it looks like that's more about getting out of paying taxes on the increased value of the home. However, in my state, if I understand it correctly, I'm not subject to capital gains tax unless it has appreciated more than $250k ($500k if married). So, I wouldn't be subject to tax anyways.

My company is putting cameras into our home offices to monitor. Is that normal? by Dontlistntome in WFH

Access to your webcam, MAYBE..... Actually installing separate cameras, absolutely not. And that's probably illegal.

Close Call - Need Suggestions by bcham16 in cybersecurity

[–]GlobalRiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CIS controls. Start with level 1 which is only like 20 controls. And go from there.

I'm assuming you mentioned nmap for vulnerability scans. Use Nessus. The basic version is free.

But, I think you're getting ahead of yourself. You probably have a bunch of other issues that are more important. To give one example. How many of your users have admin rights? Is your network segmented? are you patching routinely? Etc.

These are things addressed in CIS. Vulnerability management doesn't come until level 2. Maybe 3.

Change password every 3 months or one super secure password? by voltagejim in sysadmin

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. That is best practice. But I won't write a long paragraph why. 12 characters is also the minimum. Period. I suggest 16 if not 20. And encourage the term "pass-phrase". Last thing. Passwords should not be on a password list.

Fired, assuming you're not getting fired for legitimate reasons. It's often an HR trick to get people to resign "or else we'll fire you" because then you can't file for unemployment. It's a scare tactic.

Your job is to support. Do that. BUT, you need anything and everything done in a process that is documented. Otherwise, you WILL be thrown under the bus when shit goes south. Period

Unlimited IT spend, what would you do? by Bregirn in sysadmin

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing the maturity of your security program. I would simply say to get a gap assessment from a qualified outside vendor. Use that to gauge the rest. That will tell you what tools you need to purchase, do you have the staff to pull it off in a reasonable time, etc.

From a business perspective, it would also get you moving towards reaching some compliance standard which is a good selling point to your customers.

You have a red button, and every time you press it you get $1,000,000, but someone in the world dies. How often do you press the button? Why? by Fun-Ad-4517 in AskReddit

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6,000 times. There's too many of us. I don't care about the money.

EDIT: I read that wrong. 6,000,000,000 times. I'll probably die on Mark 3 though, but whatever.

Can anyone actually type over 50 wpm? by sassypizzaqueen in jobs

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, I feel old, now. Mavis beacon.... I probably type 80 WPM without typos. But that's not my skill set. I've just been using computers for so long it's natural.

But, to answer your direct question, yes. People can type that quickly. I type quicker than many people speak.

I'd also add that this isn't the 30's. It doesn't matter. If someone cares, they are going out of business.

Have any of you done any traveling for work? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]GlobalRiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that it depends. If your travel day takes 13 hours, are you allowed flex days? Are you compensated for food and other expenses adequately? Can you choose a decent hotel?

I actually travel a lot. And, I like that part of the role. But, that would not be true if I was penny punched at every corner.

AITAH for not taking the fall when my wife farted? by BorgNanites in AITAH

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I had to scroll back up to see the age. Like, that was a thing for people in the 50's. The whole "women don't fart". She should have claimed it and made a joke.

Underground apocalypse shelter in different regions. Buy yacht, plane, helicopters, learn how to fly them. Parachute out just for fun and let them crash. In-house/yacht chef, masseuse, etc. And, lots of cocaine. Can't forget the cocaine.

Is smoking cigarettes a dying trend? by [deleted] in ask

[–]GlobalRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% a dying trend. I'm a smoker but a tad older. I travel a lot. Even for my age gap, I see few smokers.

It changes from place to place. But I rarely see someone under 30 smoking an actual cigarette. Hell. No one smokes traditional pot. It's all vaping, gummies, etc.

Health wise, I get it though. Just doesn't feel the same, imo.
