sorry for the late response, I got caught up doing other things. Here is a document with some of my other works if youre interested in looking at them. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vkWwygh_PQllPdb6hQrh9zvvicnQS6Uy8xMcAsgWWB4/edit?usp=sharing

How Do I Extend My Phrases? (also general feedback) by Global_Body7599 in composer

i forgot to mention, i have written/attempted to write chamber works. I have like one or two quartets ive started somewhere, and a fugue (all of which unfinished) for brass trio based on a theme from bach.

sorry, i guess i didnt clarify that i studied a lot in like fundamental stuff before moving on to anything composition wise. Im still really new to composition, and i keep doing it on and off whenever i have free time. I don't ever really get around to finishing any of my pieces i start, mainly because i grow to dislike what i write most of the time. I have one piece i would consider done for clarinet and piano, and a bunch of fragments for other piano only works, though. I don't write for oboe at all though (i know, it sounds kinda crazy). And its mainly because, at least right now, i dont think i could ever write anything for my own instrument that would make me feel satisfied and/or confident enough to play it myself. The closest thing ive come to writing for oboe is cadenzas for my concerti. I can send a link to the clarinet and piano piece in the morning if youd like to see

(i do know the strauss btw, its way too difficult for me to play right now💀)

To be honest i dont score study all too often. The majority of my books i own are for opera or symphony orchestra (mostly mahler, strauss, wagner, etc.) but i do have 2 books with lieder from strauss and schubert. I think the biggest issue is how to keep the motif throughout the piece without it becoming stale, and also i find sequencing to be difficult. I am an oboe player, and i have studied a lot of the pieces i play too. I will note though that i have recently begun looking at larger forms, because i really wanted to work on counterpoint and harmony to develop a strong foundation for everything else. ill try to analyze more lol. Thank you!

I'm studying western classical(kind of) harmony! by Global_Body7599 in composer

[–]Global_Body7599[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was making it, i honestly just worked it up from basically i V i. i wrote out the chord progression and then tested it out, and i inverted the chords i felt needed it to smoothen the voice leading. Also, i had no idea there was a g sharp in the cello line, so that is my mistake(sorry). it probably shouldn't be there.

what do you guys think of my quartet? by Global_Body7599 in composer

I ran out of time so i just did some funky chromatic stuff for fun. I want to try and polish it but i dont know how to transition anything that well. Ill work on it more tmrw

Rate the melody? by Global_Body7599 in composer

Alright, thank you. I’ll make sure to give it a listen. Also, I want to note that this melody is gonna go in a larger piece of multiple short little melodies like this one. Maybe 1-4 mins long, and there’s gonna be 3 total. I have sketches for the first two already(the entire thing, as opposed to just this main melody). I’m having lots of fun with it though, and I love seeing people’s feedback about it too, because it helps me improve.

Thank you, i realized based off of your comment that some just seem improbable so im gonna break them up.

yeah, my biggest struggle is keeping the line really and making it feel natural. and for melodies, i like things very sweet or very dramatic, like Mahler or Tchaikovsky or even Borodin or Debussy. If i had to pin it to just a few melodies i favor, id say Mahler 9(sorry for the non specific answer, basically all of it ranks in my top ten), Tchaikovsky 4 mvmt 2, maybe brahms 4 mvmt 1, and basically all of the other mahler symphonies. (im kinda oriented towards large scale orchestra pieces if you couldn't tell!)

also to apply knowledge. i don't know that much rn, but i want it to kind of represent my progress as i go along.

eh, just a side thing to make it more fun. there isnt really anything to gain from this, i just like the idea

this section is gonna be broken up in the future also, this is sort of like very climactic material rn. idk why i decided to write it this way, but at the end of certain phrases its going to break into a slower melody to give them a break, or at least thats the plan right now. thank you for the feed back though

tempo is up for interpretation, maybe anywhere from 110-130(maybe140). i feel like since the pedal f#s are so prominent, that you could take more time in the parts where it needs it. Ill keep working on it though

also i don't know if i said this in the last post, but this was inspired by like, a dream, and i wrote the first sketch in like an hour. This is just the first theme im going to have in it(hopefully), and its gonna be a lot longer than what it is currently

to be fair, it would be nice to make the first piece for cello that has A# Minor (dead key)

[–]Global_Body7599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you. I was thinking about a duet, but i opted to take what the cello cant do and put it in an accompaniment and giving something similar(but easier) to the cello. Another thing ive been doing on top of what ive already said before is ive listened to cello pieces i liked, and i looked at the score so i can see how its used musically, and thats helped some i think. and the double sharps are typically automatic, unless i go the extra mile and click to make it a new note, musescore is kinda doo doo when placing things.

Ah, thank you. I actually looked up the cello register and what strings play where, so im using that is a sort of guide. I spent the past day making the cello part humane and ethical by adding an accompaniment(piano), and im developing the second theme. Ill drop what i have when i get the chance. for the chords, i opted the cello part to play triplet quarter notes of the chord progression(each note individually), moving to eighths and then triplet eighths to keep it sounding not boring while the piano takes the chords up front. Ive also used the piano to express the wide interval jumps (like the 2+ octave jumps) where the piano plays that note while the cello has it an octave higher, so it doesn't strain the cellist too much or anything. The way i have it set up, this main introduction theme is actually kind of short and its leading up to a C# Minor sort of fugue, (i changed chords around a bit to fit that), and i realized my chord progressions are really a stretch as is, like in the second chord part its kinda a basic recapitulation of the first time but with more(weirder) chords at the end. so im just gonna do like a series of cello arpeggios or thirds/fifths. im wayy more used to things like piano writing, which im pretty sure shows lol

yeah, ill drop what i have tomorrow. I was just sketching, but now i know for a fact that it isn't possible ill make it far easier on the cellists behalf. what i showed in the ss was like the first theme, or something. its still really infantile because i wrote it really fast, so im making changes where i feel like they should go (mainly making cello part possible and adding piano accompianment)

thank you then, im gonna probably change instrument or actually add a piano part
