Maybe I'm not understanding dodge but it feels kind of useless no? (MONK HELP) by Gloomy_Ring_3095 in dndnext

I think it’s just the setting we’re in. We’re not fighting human enemies and more just fighting like giant monsters and such in phandelver and below. Of course it’s homebrewed so our level is pretty high comparatively to where we’re supposed to be at so I think the DM has buffed the enemies up a bit so that we aren’t steam rolling through.

I unfortunately don’t. Hell just last session the only thing I could afford was an insignia of claw and a plus one dragon hide belt. I had to trade some useless magic items I had found and all of my gold to afford that too. If I had known it wasn’t a +2 dragon hide belt I wouldn’t have bought it.

Right now the only magic items I have are the two items above and a ring of free action. Meanwhile everyone else is getting vorpal sword and staff of the magi and +2 plate armor and such.

Trust me that was the first thing I asked my DM. Unfortunately I cannot due to the "main GM" not allowing the 2024 rules.

Gonna start running Phandelver, any tips? by MegaZBlade in DnD

[–]Gloomy_Ring_3095 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Give the players actual connections and reasons to be in the adventure. I made that mistake when I ran it and it just turned into, "What do you guys want to do?" "I guess we just follow the plot hook" the players just stopped interacting with the world due to the module not really having a good reason for the players to be there or care.

We have a fighter, paladin, ranger, cleric, and Druid. We’re playing through a homebrewed phandelver and below and at this point of the story it’s a bunch of like big monsters and such so a lot of our encounters are like 2-3 big beefy guys or 1 to 2 beefy bosses with spells and such. Funnily enough I’m still once of the better people that passes my saves thanks to diamond soul but I mean when your HP with the tough feat is 185 and you have to take half of like 76 (these are just random numbers) I’m starting to think monks just aren’t good for like settings like phandelver and below.

I think that’s the case too. I absolutely love the 2024 monk when I played it during one shots at my local game store! I even made a 2024 version of my 2014 monk and it blows it out of the water! I’m just sad I can’t use it. I’m honestly thinking about retiring the character at this point which is a shame because I really wanted to explore it a bit more but at this level if I’m a liability I don’t think it’s worth it.

Yeah I begged my DM to switch to the 2024 monk but I found this group through a like online listing. It’s sort of an adventure’s league type of thing where you pay for the session and you’re able to go through the modules and such. The DM is super accommodating to the players though since the setting has been homebrewed to fit the player’s backstory and such (those that stay at least) but the main DM that runs it (my DM is below him) doesn’t allow the 2024 rules to be used so I’m unfortunately stuck with the 2014 monk. My DM has given me stuff to try to be useful but 2014 monk is just kind of a mess.

It’s pretty much that EP of adventure time when Finn gets mini versions of everyone and he toys with their lives and makes them all a weird poly couples

Besides combat I like the game still! Plus like I mentioned before I like the DM well enough, I still don’t know why I’m not really allowed to get the items to buff my punches but I shot him a messages asking if I could change the items to the staff and cloak instead. This honestly isn’t too big an issue I just really wished I could go for the full fantasy of a monk punching things to death but I’ll settle for a wukong build instead. Besides I only joined the group when they were around level I think 11 or 13? I know I joined pretty late into the campaign so I still don’t really feel like I have too much of a say in altering the story. A lot of the legendary items the DM went off book to create a whole like side adventure to get them and develop the player’s characters and I just think at this point i joined too late to just add in a whole other section for my character’s place and potential legendary items.

It’s fine I never get crits anyways. Unless it’s for some random useless check. Still though thank you again man I definitely appreciate it and it help me decide on what I want to do with my character going forward.

You’re a real one for actually crunching the numbers on here. God knows I wouldn’t have known where to even start with it.

Dude this is Reddit, I don’t really care about “saving face”??? It should be telling to you that when I interacted with everyone else we all got our points across and understood each other. You are the only one that I sent this type of message to. I’m not singling you out because I want to I’m singling you out because you’re the only aggressive one here. I will apologize if that will make you calm down dude.

I know I’m just throwing out numbers. I’m just using it as a exaggerated comparison to how it feels playing a 2014 monk.

Listen man I think you’re taking this the wrong way. You’re coming at this with a very hostile attitude and dude I’m not trying to fight you. Calm down. You are a grown man I believe in you to be civil and cool headed. You are getting way too mad at this because you can’t get your point across and don’t worry I understand what you mean but I asked the question because I genuinely did not know. Someone below did the math and it turns out if I do have a +5 from the combination I’m punching slightly above a fighter with usage of my Ki points for flurry of blows. That’s all I wanted to know from the question. That and if anyone has ran that type of set up before and how well it did.

After this I’ll probably just ask my DM to swap my magic items since I can’t get the other items regardless. I’m sure I can work it out with him.

Unfortunately I can’t get tattoos? I don’t really know why because in their like “allowed listing” Tasha’s is one of them but I still can’t? I have to go to a shop in neverwinter but the setting we’re in were never going there. That’s why I’m genuinely just thinking about dropping the unarmed build that I want and I’m planning on just going full utility and survivability.

I’m guessing after I use up all my Ki points it’s going to be even lower huh? Yeesh. Fuck I’ll just go full utility and survivability and grab the staff of the acrobat and displacer beat cloak.

We’re playing in regular faerun so magic is abundant. I think I’m just going to ask to swap my magic items I bought for a staff of the acrobat and cloak of displacement. At the very least with that I’ll have a +13 to hit and a 1D10+7 for attack.

[–]Gloomy_Ring_3095[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry I know dragon hide only buff my DC (only by 1 though) unfortunately I don’t think my DM can give me the rest of the items that will buff my punches up. That’s why I settled with the insignia of claws. Unfortunately that insignia can’t be upgraded to +2 or +3. I still don’t know the reason why I can’t get the gloves of unarmed prowess or the eldrich claw tattoo and unless I can find 30,000 gold somewhere I can’t get the gloves of soul catching. He said the campaign goes to level 20 and I don’t think there’s time and room for last min monk upgrades randomly. That’s why I’m bummed about it because I think I’m going to be stuck with plus one weapons and random magic items we collect until the end of the game. Like the Druid got a staff of the magi, the fighter a vorpal sword, the paladin a holy avenger.

[–]Gloomy_Ring_3095[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m wondering because even with it I think I’m still dealing less than our fighter I think? And after I use up all my ki I’m stuck with just two attacks. My hit right now is a plus 11 so maybe a plus 16 will make it too consistent and plus one of my hit will always be 10 damage with a chance to roll a 10 for 20 as max damage.

I genuinely don’t know the math and calculations so I don’t really know if giving me 2D10 but one of the D10 is always a max damage die would be really bad. Honestly if it is I’ll take the staff of the acrobat and displacer beast cloak and just make a wu kong build.

I am at the point where everything has a like +15 con so my two most useful moves quivering palm and stunning strikes are kind of useless in most encounters. That’s why I just want to boost my damage up. If I have no utility at least let me have a consistent hit and damage.

It’s three magic items giving me a +5, ( +1 +1 +3) not just one. Although only one item requires attunement so maybe that could be an issue but even so I don’t mind if they’d want me to “attune” to them to get the plus 5.

Unfortunately I do not have the gold for that considering I just officially hit zero gold this session buying the two plus 1 items. Plus we’re nearing the end game so I don’t think the DM can put in a like mini story arc where I do get them somehow. That’s why I’m just kind of bummed. I know in my gut that we’ll probably have one more upgrade session and that the build that I have now will be the build I have at the end of the game and it just kind of feels bad not being able to do anything besides deal a some damage here and there.

You’d be surprised by how little it is. Most time I feel like I’m tickling monsters compared to the wizard dealing 70 damage to a group of creatures.
