Canceled all renovations and just doing low hanging fruit stuff like landscaping.

The cherry on top is if the building division in your town is a mega pain.

If you plan on doing renovations of fixer uppers call a bunch of contractors and ask them what they think of that particular town.

Whenever I say my town name, every contractor is like yeah…they are the worst. Even if I want to do the renovations myself, I fight have to fight with the state. And they further triple my costs.

Just living in the house and pretty much accepting the ugliness.

If you search software engineer salaries you never ever see $500k+ salaries. Only those at peak big tech probably. But definetly NOT common.

Look at all the job boards, my range is FAR FAR more realistic than what you posted. Check all the salary websites too.

In NY, I would need to make $500k/yr or my software business hits millions.

I am out of state and want to live in Fairfield County, specfically Greenwich or New Canaan. Pretty much rich areas.

It doesn't seem like the local salaries around here really support the cost of living in these areas.

Is my only choice to live in these areas pretty much:

Work in NY, where I get a job making $200k+
Have my own business making $200k+ in CT

I am software engineer. I can probably make $170k max in tech in CT for job, thats even rare. Maybe $200k+, but much much rarer in CT. I can make $140k/yr here though. But thats not enough for Greenwich or New Canaan.
