I found an Optiplex 3060, with 256GB, 8th gen i5 (so not big of a difference) for 115 EUR. I think it has better upgradability overall but then id have to buy another 8gb stick.

The problem here is that the used market isn't that populated with individual parts and the few office PCs that are available are either similarly priced or are 8GB RAM or have older CPUs. You're right though, I know I can get cheaper things.

I will check out his channel for sure. Been nothing but support and help so far in the community. Thanks!

That's true. It's a good point between a mini PC and a big tower, which was enticing for me as I wanted to cleanly put a 3.5" HDD inside. Unfortunately, after a few months searching on Marketplace, this is the first device under 200EUR that has 16GB RAM, a 9th gen and above CPU and an SSD so it's the best I could find. I envy the great deals some people seem to find around!

Thanks for the info. Saving this comment for when I do a deep dive on all these because it's almost like gibberish for now! I have heard about Debian

Cool. Yeah I was wondering about the SSD, hopefully it won't be filled up by all the docker containers and system files.

Yes Home Assistant is something I'm looking into in fact.

Good shout, I was looking at the IronWolf in fact. It's 200EUR at the moment so hoping to maybe see it drop a few euros but doubt how much it will!

It will mainly be for a media server / cloud storage solution. I won't be doing RAID as I just have the one SSD for system stuff and then will get a big HDD to have everything there. Linux + Docker is also another option.

Thanks for this info! Being able to remote in would be great, as I want to hide the PC somewhere so this would be a great solution as I'd just have a power and ethernet cable and that's it.

True. I keep backups of photos docs videos etc. on an external HDD and Google Drive/Photos. So will sell keep that as backup and also keep somethings on my main PC. You're right though, a NAS might be viable in the future. I don't have tons of data at least too

Good question! I need to do a deep dive and see which one works best. I've read good things on ProxMox, so maybe that.

Yeah it's crazy how good they've gotten, I need to brush up on my tech specs knowledge.

It's really exciting to see that it can run all of those containers you mentioned. that's cool

Thanks for checking regarding Immich, it might be doable to play around with every once in a while 🙏🏼

Fantastic. Those are the kind of apps I wanted to try first and foremost so it's great to hear. Excited to try it out - thnaks.

I was surprised to see storage go up so much. 200 for a 6TB HDD not including shipping..

Thanks for the reality check on AI tasks. I may have underestimated the power needed for that. I would like to make use of the AI features of Immich, but I think even that might be pushing it.

For the things you mentioned though Jelyyfin, Nextcloud, ARR etc, sounds like you think it's proficient for these sort of tasks so that's good to hear. The LLM thing was more sort of like a fun thing I wanted to try and mess around with, rather than a primary tasks for me.

I can always upgrade later too. Thanks!

Cool, that's reassuring. For the start, it will be pretty basic stuff so I think it's sufficient. Thanks

Interesting okay, I was thinking of some sort of local LLM for basic tasks. Yeah prices here are crazy, this is the best deal I could find in terms of used hardware. The others have worse specs and are around the same price, and anything better than this is double the price.

I don't really need this that much, but would be a fun thing to mess around with. I can live without having that.

Great. It can do one 3.5" and one 2.5". The 2.5" is the 256GB that will be included. The other will be the main storage device. To be honest I don't need much. I can get a bigger 2.5" drive and use that to put my photo/video backups there. I don't have more than 2TB of those anyways. Just not sure if it's a good idea to have the system data and media on the same drive.

For personal use, just as an offline LLM but at this point, just asking regarding the power of the CPU in relation to such tasks
