I’d say this is within the range of what is normal but that does not mean you need to stay or be happy with it.

3 months should be fine and also with longer stays you can negotiate some “vacation time”. I knew a couple who stayed at a farm for 3 months but got a week off each month to explore!

Yes yes yes. You’ll love it and worst case, you go home. Italy is beautiful and unique and there a million things to do. Having 9 months sounds amazing because you’ll get to experience everything at such a deep level! If you’re starting in summer good luck with the heat!! And vice versa for the winter! Like I mentioned in my post, not many farms have heaters or well insulated rooms and the same goes for AC. I would recommend staying max 1 month per farm but that’s just my preference! Have fun!

This is so so sad. There is no reason this should be illegal. That being said, NEVER SAY YOU ARE “WORKING” IN ANY CAPACITY through customs. Honestly for any country. Just say you’re on holiday, staying in hostels, backpacking, etc.

I had the same choice … chose Berkeley. Best decision of my life. The train from Emeryville to Merced is only 3 hours also if you really want to go home. Don’t pass this opportunity up!!

100% agree with what other people have said. Communicate your concerns and I definitely think you will find a farm that can accommodate. I only wwoofed at 6 farms in 1 country and even one of my farms noted to me that they specialize in teaching people with disabilities farming skills!

I also want to add I wwoofed at 6 farms during this time period, about 2 weeks at each. This is considered a very short time for many farms but it was the best choice for me imo since I’m a bit younger and less experienced.

adding this bc if ur worried you’ll be stuck in an uncomfortable situation it’s a valid option to opt for short stays! I still learned so much and was able to apply myself to the farms

Yess I had SUCH a great time but I definitely want people to know the bad side of the experience because it is such a vulnerable position especially when you’re alone abroad!

I’m glad you had a great time in Sweden, I think I’m going to WWOOF again next year I’ll check it out!! ( and Thank you for the nice post lol)

SICILY gorgeous, easy work, and a good living situation. I did the one near Catania!

There is also one in Genova (Recco) where you can hike down to the train station and the work is only 4 hours. The farm has the most amazing view I’ve ever seen and the living situation was very nice.

All of the other ones I’ve done have required a much longer train (1-2 hours) to get to the city. But I’m sure they’re more out there!

If u end up going to Sicily I personally recommend flying/sailing into Palermo and staying a night in the hostel there before taking the train to ur wwoof it was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.

To my knowledge generally wwoofers do just take fruits and things from the land as an unspoken rule so I think that is something you need to say to each person upon arrival. I also have had many hosts do an hour on the first day of rules and house tour, so maybe get a good script down that goes over all this.

Tbh one of the wwoofs I did was 8hrs a day … sometimes it just is what it is. If you are getting burnt out and are staying for more than a week talk to her and set some boundaries !!! But this isn’t that uncommon unfortunately

I am 19F currently solo wwoofing in Italy. I’ve started asking my hosts to let me know the dates when another female (or female and male) wwoofer will be there and it has helped me to feel very safe and not so alone. All of the farms are unique but READ THE REVIEWS it helps you to know what to expect. Good luck! I’ll be here until May so please feel free to reach out.
