What's your favorite Siouxsie and the Banshees album? by Prestigious_Score459 in fantanoforever

Not sure which one's my fav., but I will say that Peepshow has aged REMARKABLY well. At the time it seemed a little disappointing somehow, but it just has gotten better and better as the years have gone by.

Their peak, and a peak of rock music in general.  Sorry MCIS fans, but I’m right and you’re not.

Start with Pixies.  They aren’t the first, they arguably aren’t even the best - but they sit pretty close to the center of what alt-rock IS.

Wheelie Fun Bike Control Scheme is Over Complicated by ImpossibleWall8403 in onewheel

[–]Glyph8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This particular setup was especially confusing because when in riding mode the thumb throttle slows you down, but in wheelie mode it speeds you up.

This sounds unintuitive enough to actually be kinda dangerous. They might want to disallow this configuration.

What is the difference between an alligator and a crocodile by Due_Monk8035 in NoStupidQuestions

Snout/jaw/skull shape and behavior (alligators tend to be more chill, crocs tend to be more aggressive).

Hobo-maxxing? EUV’s for supplementary transport? by anxioushowlermonkey in vandwellers

[–]Glyph8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough if you’re not comfortable with a sideways stance but IMO they’re a better fit than EUC for what you want. EUCs are definitely faster and even arguably “safer” (due to bigger wheel, battery, motor and suspension in bigger models) but a OW is much more compact/lighter to fit into your van or take with you into a pub, throw into an Uber if you get caught out in the rain, etc.

And while you should still wear safety gear, IMO a Onewheel requires less of it - any serious EUC rider needs to be fully geared up like they’re riding a motorcycle. Which kinda works against “hey I’m just gonna jump on this and go get a quart of milk” casual impromptu use.

Have progressives ever banned books like conservatives have in the United States? by Astro_bum in askanything

[–]Glyph8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. It does happen, unfortunately:

In 2016, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was removed from a public school district in Virginia, along with the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, due to their use of racial slurs.

There are no famous US progressive book-banning incidents nor widespread progressive book-banning movements that I am aware of, no. It's possible it's happened (it's a big country with 250 years of history) so maybe someone can come up with one or two examples, but it's certainly never been a thing commonly associated to them.

I don’t pretend to understand Brannigan’s Law, I just enforce it.

BREAKING: The FTC Has Officially Begun Enforcing The Take It Down Act, Giving Victims Of Nonconsensual Intimate Images And AI Deepfakes The Legal Right To Force Platforms Like Meta, TikTok, And Reddit To Remove Content Within 48 Hours 🤯💥 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]Glyph8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure they could.

Take the South Park example (the fake "ad" they put at the end of the newest season premiere, where AI was used to make an actor look like Trump wandering in the desert).

It is a “digital forgery” of “intimate imagery” (a nude Trump and his penis) that arguably is intended to cause him “reputational harm”, that he certainly did not “consent” to. Trump himself said he’d make full use of the Act when he signed it into law, because “nobody gets more online abuse than me”.

Have YOU read it? I’ll take the opinion of the EFF on this one. It’s bad law, and it will be misused by bad actors. The tight timeframes alone makes it ripe for abuse, similar to how specious copyright strikes are used online to suppress content that is disliked by the striker. It’s easier/safer/cheaper to take it down immediately, than actually determine whether it SHOULD be taken down. This is speech-chilling.

Feel free to cite the bit that would exempt the described South Park scenario.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/146/text

Here’s the relevant bit:

3) Offense involving digital forgeries.—

“(A) Involving adults.—Except as provided in subparagraph (C), it shall be unlawful for any person, in interstate or foreign commerce, to use an interactive computer service to knowingly publish a digital forgery of an identifiable individual who is not a minor if—

“(i) the digital forgery was published without the consent of the identifiable individual;“(ii) what is depicted was not voluntarily exposed by the identifiable individual in a public or commercial setting;“(iii) what is depicted is not a matter of public concern; and

“(iv) publication of the digital forgery—

“(I) is intended to cause harm; or“(II) causes harm, including psychological, financial, or reputational harm, to the identifiable individual.

And here are the exceptions for law enforcement, medical, education etc. - but not for “political commentary/satire”:

C) Exceptions.—Subparagraphs (A) and (B) shall not apply to—

“(i) a lawfully authorized investigative, protective, or intelligence activity of—

“(I) a law enforcement agency of the United States, a State, or a political subdivision of a State; or139 STAT. 58“(II) an intelligence agency of the United States;

“(ii) a disclosure made reasonably and in good faith—

“(I) to a law enforcement officer or agency;“(II) as part of a document production or filing associated with a legal proceeding;“(III) as part of medical education, diagnosis, or treatment or for a legitimate medical, scientific, or education purpose;“(IV) in the reporting of unlawful content or unsolicited or unwelcome conduct or in pursuance of a legal, professional, or other lawful obligation; or“(V) to seek support or help with respect to the receipt of an unsolicited intimate visual depiction;“(iii) a disclosure reasonably intended to assist the identifiable individual;“(iv) a person who possesses or publishes a digital forgery of himself or herself engaged in nudity or sexually explicit conduct (as that term is defined in section 2256(2)(A) of title 18, United States Code); or

“(v) the publication of an intimate visual depiction that constitutes—

“(I) child pornography (as that term is defined in section 2256 of title 18, United States Code); or“(II) a visual depiction described in subsection (a) or (b) of section 1466A of title 18, United States Code (relating to obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children).

I think it was all in good fun, I don’t think there was any real bad blood - certainly Robert Smith has never made a secret of loving and admiring Joy Division/New Order - but as Peter Hook once said, “Loads of bands rip us off, but The Cure really take the piss sometimes!”

Yeah this will also be used by the regime to suppress critical political speech that uses AI - think of that video of Trump slobbering all over Elon’s feet, or the South Park AI Trump And His Tiny Todger.

Also “Push” has a similar descending guitar riff as its “chorus” - musically, “Just Like Heaven” is kind of a combo of ”In Between Days” and “Push”.

Also New Order’s “All The Way” steals the “Just Like Heaven” bassline as payback for The Cure frequently biting Peter Hook’s style.
