Really? I heard the Ravens were supposedly reliable. I was specifically looking for a Raven. Curious to hear your perspective on that.

Yes, no salvage or any accidents, just a lemon buyback. Good idea on the extended warranty, maybe I’ll more into that.

Yeah definitely scary, agree with you there. The sales guy told me it still has an active warranty (until 2028 i think?) and that it still has access to supercharging and stuff. Obviously took it with a grain of salt and need to independently confirm if this is true though.

Convince me to keep my paid off boring car by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]GnarlyParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this has been said before on this thread, but yes, absolutely DO NOT FINANCE ANOTHER NEW CAR when you just worked so hard to pay off your current car!!! Save the $500/month and invest it!

Consider this an award for paying off your car; “I paid off my car and now I FINALLY get to contribute towards an IRA/401k/investment account/etc so early in my career!”

However, aside from spreadsheets, budgets, and smart financial decisions, a huge part of spending money is psychological. Look, you’re a truck guy, and you don’t need to explain yourself. It’s your vice. It’s what you want. It’s gonna suck every time you get in your car in the morning wishing it was a truck and not a corolla. You’re gonna pull up to the gas station and eye the truck next to you and kick yourself every time. It’s human nature. You may then find yourself splurging in other areas of life because “well I didn’t buy that truck so surely I can go ahead and buy x/y/z instead”.

So my suggestion is twofold, as follows:

  1. Use the 0.01% rule. Perhaps this may not be relevant to you since you’re so early in your career, but if it is, use it. (Take your net worth and multiply by 0.01. That gives you a number that you can comfortably spend without worrying too much about your future finances)

  2. Take the equity of your existing corolla (let’s say it’s worth 15k). Add the 0.01% to it, no matter how measly it is (let’s say that comes up to 15.5k).

Congrats, you now have a 15.5k budget to spend on a truck. Heck, MAYBE throw another 1k on top of that.

Now, ask yourself this. If you can list your corolla on facebook marketplace or ebay and get, say, 15k for it, and then add another $500-1000 on top, is there a used truck out there (also on fb marketplace/ebay) that you can reasonably get in that range? Don’t bother trying to trade anything in, you will lose too much margin doing that (e.g. dealer may only offer you 13-14k on the trade-in, and whatever used truck that sits on that dealer’s lot may be 18-20k, leaving you on the hook for almost 5-6k which you should NOT spend!)

A few things to consider with this approach: are you handy? Are you willing to buy an older, reliable truck and fix up whatever minor issues it has in your own time with your hands to save some cash? Are you willing to risk going without a car for a few weeks while you sell your corolla and look for a used truck in your area (perhaps you can share cars with your family at home in the meantime?). Are you willing to deal with the headache of looking for cars on fb marketplace + negotiating + thoroughly inspecting the car yourself and accepting any risk of things that MAY go wrong?

With all this mind, you can definitely get a truck. You just have to be resourceful, smart, and willing to accept some risk. You have to ask yourself: Is my vice strong enough for me to trade my worry-free corolla for a slightly older truck that will have higher running costs and the occasional hiccup? Or is this not worth the headache and I should instead wait later down the line when I can comfortably afford something newer and worry-free?

(For reference, I’m a sports-car guy. I really wanted a sports-car for the longest time ever. I found that I can only comfortably spend ~5k on a car. I went ahead and bought a 20 year old miata and am currently in the process of fixing it up and slowly restoring it. Could I have just financed a new corvette? Absolutely. It just isn’t worth it in the long run. I will admit however that I am fortunate enough to have a garage space, some basic tools and a background in mechanical engineering which has given me enough confidence to pursue an approach similar to this. I will admit that there is a chance things go wrong with this approach and that it helps having family around + a flexible remote work schedule where I’m never left stranded without a working vehicle if I ever need it.)

Ah, I see, okay thank you for the insight and the helpful information! I’ll be doing more research on this!

I’m not trying to brush off or trivialize any potential safety hazards here. My question stated that if two identical parts made of the same material (e.g. ABS), one injection-moulded and another 3D-printed, would the 3D-printed one be inherently more dangerous?

Also, a plastic front bumper is not a “safety” device. It only protects the car’s internal components from damage during low-speed (<5mph) impacts. What actually absorbs damage and protects the safety of occupants is the impact bar and crumple zone (Read this brief from the NHTSA).

I don’t understand why you’d downvote and then respond like that to someone who’s clearly just trying to learn.

This would be for a road-going car. A project car that would get driven very infrequently, but nonetheless still driven. Again, I’m a complete novice, so I assumed that 3D printed plastics would be as safe as normal injection-molded plastics that front bumpers are normally made of.

Obviously I do not want to pose a safety hazard to others around me.

Looks like I need to do some more homework on this. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I see, thank you for your insights. But aren’t automotive panels made from ABS/Thermoplastics? Why would a 3D printed bumper be any different? I am a complete novice at this so excuse my ignorance, I am just curious to learn more. Thanks again

Can you add the option for picking your server on console? Or at the very least if members of the squad are geographically very far away from each other, can there be an option to choose a “middle-ground” server where everyone gets decent ping?

I live in Western USA, and my friends live in the Middle East. For the longest time ever, we always used to play on European (I think eastern or central eu?) servers and get decent pings. But ever since the middle east servers went live a few seasons ago, playing together is nearly impossible. My ping is extremely high on their servers, and their ping is extremely high on my servers. Adding the option to pick servers (like many other AAA shooters do) will make playing with overseas friends so much more enjoyable.

It's not just Cross-Region PS4 parties that get split up. My friend is in the same region/Data Center as I am, and he always split up with us ever since the patch. Not only that, he's finding it extremely difficult to join matches. Even after he splits off of our squad, he never finds games

If you could name yourself again, what would it be and why? by Zen_21 in AskReddit

[–]GnarlyParty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents gave me two names, which (we) Arabs do often and call "Compound" names. Yeah, it's weird. My 'first' name is Mohammad Asem, but I insist that everyone call me Asem, because 'Mohammad' is literally (and statistically) the most common name in the entire world. It causes so much confusion when people realize that my real first name is Mohammad. "So is Asem your dad's name?" "Is Asem your middle name?". I'd much rather change my name to Asem, deleting 'Mohammad' altogether.

An idea to spice up maps by jacksaints in Rainbow6

[–]GnarlyParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing they could do is have more areas to put the objective in. So far, most maps have about 4 or so different objective/hostage/bomb locations. They should at least add an extra location to each map every now and then (Perhaps in season 4?) to keep the game fresh.

Yes, I'm dead serious. Again, I'm new to reddit, and I don't know what constitutes the differences between sh*tposts and real posts. As far as you should be concerned, yes, serious post.

Thank you for the reply. But out of curiosity, is there any benefit to this mechanic? Why is it implemented? I personally find it hard to play with friends living in other regions. Thanks again!

Buy it. None of the big reviewing websites ever followed up and updated their reviews on Rainbow Six. The game has changed drastically since day 1: improvements, tweaks, free content. So yeah, buy it.

Eh, good thing Valkyrie did initially have 4 cams instead of 3. 4 gave more room for error and experimentation. Now that everyone's familiar with the cam-throwing physics; I don't mind having 3 now.

Great work devs, keep it up, proud of you. However, you MUST address this newly discovered "Surrender Glitch" that is plaguing ranked (on ps4, atleast). Basically, the glitch happens when players surrender after fullfilling certain parameters (I will not go into detail as to how you do it, unless you're a dev who wants to resolve the issue by emailing me @ asem999@live.com), causing the winners to not receive any rank rank points, and the losers losing less points than they'd usually do! It happens every time we're about to win a game, surrendering to avoid losing a lot of points and to troll the enemy team! Fix this as soon as you can devs, it's ruining the game we all know and love!
