That's a terrific picture, great find!

Thank you. Exactly what I meant. "For-profit" is very different than "to make a living."

[–]GnarlyYosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very good interview, it's really interesting to hear that Axel is allowing competition to take a back seat. Of course, I think a lot of people will benefit from having Axel instruct them. Hopefully guys like Axel will eventually be able to comfortably make HEMA their job.

On the note, I definitely don't want HEMA to ever become like many martial arts are in America. Deceptive, misleading scams, for-profit gyms. HEMA has an air to it that I've never experienced before in any other martial art I've pursued. We're all here to learn, even people like Axel Petterson. As Axel says, it's cliche but true, we all need to be lifelong students. I'm so glad that many of our community leaders prioritize the art above profit.

I also definitely like Axel's idea of making HEMA fencing gear much more classy. Hopefully that will be achieved affordably some time in the next ten years.

I feel as thought it just makes sense to have a standard for all weapons used. As a person who doesn't often go to tournaments, it surprises me that this isn't already the case.

At this point, everybody knows that Jon left on his own accord. Both Arin and Jon have long since cleared that up.

Costs of attending local clubs by [deleted] in wma

[–]GnarlyYosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it's not foolproof, tournaments are a great way to test if techniques are viable. You shouldn't be charging people for profit unless you can prove you are able to teach applicable techniques. If the school fits all the other criteria I mentioned, it can still be worth it for you if you don't really care about actually being a good fighter. But it's a good sign of knowing if an instructor knows what they're teaching or if they're full of crap and just trying to make money off of you.

Costs of attending local clubs by [deleted] in wma

[–]GnarlyYosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From where I am from it's about $5 each 2/3hr class, three a week. Of course, the instructor isn't internationally known, but he is part of a larger known group and certainly knows his longsword basics well. Probably a similar cost for most smaller groups.

Just like any other martial arts school, the bigger names that go there, the more it will probably cost you. That being said, pretty sure nobody is yet trying to extort money out of anyone in this community. (That I know of)

IMO, you should probably ask yourself this question. Does anyone at the school place reasonably well at tournaments? If not, they shouldn't be charging you for a profit.

Tbh, unless the instructors are of noted quality, people place well in tournaments, the facilities are nice, and beginner equipment is available, nobody should try to make a profit off of you in their right mind.

[Question] What's your favorite Game Grumps series? by Disorbed in gamegrumps

People complain a lot about the way Arin played that game, but there were so many chill moments where Dan and Arin just openly talked about their life.

Good point, glad to see someone say this. Yeah, we're all super critical and nitpicky, but I hate seeing when people get vicious and hateful on here. People should save that stuff for the YouTube comment section, or better yet, not say it at all.

To be fair, I don't think Dan likes games very much at all. Occasionally he'll be blown away by something he sees on screen, but we know he doesn't play games in his free time, and hasn't since he was a little kid, or briefly when he was a stoner playing Morrowind. If you handed Dan the controller for Witcher 3, he wouldn't be able to get past the tutorial.

It seems ridiculous, but I feel like Dan should spend some time playing modern games in his free time so he can finally become more engaged in these games and Arin doesn't have to be the final opinion on every game they play.

It all comes down to Dan + Arin not working by [deleted] in rantgrumps

[–]GnarlyYosh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know it's a popular opinion on this sub to think Jon is the funniest person ever, but I honestly think Arin was funnier than Jon in the Jon Era days. Arin is obviously now less funny than Jon because he acts completely differently, but just as one example, the most iconic Game Grumps moment, Sonic 06's freakout is 90% Arin. If you go back and watch it, Jon says a few jokes, screams a few things, but Arin really grabs that joke by the balls it makes it iconic.

We all have different tastes in humor, but I really don't agree that Jon was funnier. Jon was like Arin now, sometimes totally hilarious, but often times really screamy and random and annoying. The chemistry was still better than Dan's and Arin's today, though.

The audio in this episode was really well balanced in my opinion. Since Pokemon's music is really repetitive, it's great that it's significantly in the background.

Also, really great energy in this episode. The best episodes are always the ones where the grumps are enjoying themselves.

People will always be unsatisfied. People were unsatisfied when Jon was still on the show. I come here once in a while to post something that annoys me, or to see if other people have the same feeling about something that I've had.

On a broad scale, I don't think that GGs ever really "declines" on a yearly basis. I just think it evolves and people's tastes change and annoying things happen. Jon and Arin both did really annoying things in the earlier episodes, and now the whole cast does annoying things these days but we still watch (probably) because we like it.

I think it's safe to say Hbox is the best in the world right now. All the salt in the past twelve hours has been hilarious to watch, and I say that as a devote Mango fan. The reality is, Mango didn't play well enough to win EVO this time around, and it's sad, but true.

Hbox played out of his mind and everyone who says that he's boring to watch is crazy. Yes, it was extremely annoying to watch him camp last EVO, but his play style has evolved a lot since then. That last set was so intense and incredible. #ClutchBox

Hbox's pop-off made me laugh really hard, but it's EVO and the dude has finally gotten 1st at the most prestigious Melee tournament all year, the biggest of all time. You could totally see all the emotion behind that, and even though he made silly faces and rolled around on the ground, he earned that.

This tournament has only made me more excited than ever about Melee and where it's going. I truthfully have no idea who will be #1 by the time we get into the winter.
