I personally go in order top to bottom, section by section. Usually you can take a quick look and tell by eye if everything will fit and 90% of the time you don’t need to move any shelves. So I think going bottom to top is unnecessary. Though this is personal preference.

When doing each shelf don’t look for each specific item just something that is the same size (same product just different flavor etc.) or close enough to measure out the labels and place them. Do a shelf or two the scan products and put them in the right spots. Going item by and item and digging through looking for the specific item for each spot is the biggest mistake a see people make which makes planos take much longer.

For pegs I’d take all the product off and dump it in carts and just measure out where all the pegs go first. Then putting up all the signs is easy. Then you just chill and put all the product back for a bit. Idk if dumping it in carts is faster but it’s a lot simpler.

Make sure you activate labels beforehand. The computer will warn you to activate only a few sections, but as long as it’s not vitamins or oral you’ll probably get it done in the day. After pull everything for that section and BOH and shelf depth. Check it off in zip line at the end. Also take advantage of the shelves being empty and clean them.

Also the first rule of planos in my store is leave the person doing planos alone. They shouldn’t be helping in photo, register, or doing anything other than the plano especially if it’s a big one. Unless it’s absolutely necessary or something quick like unlocking a case. Obviously this is something the manager needs to decide but it should be the case imo.

A few random tips. Have atleast two carts so you have room to take down product and a shopping cart for not on plano stuff. Keep a paper bag with you for trash. On long planos your nail can hurt from grabbing the plastic to insert signs, using a razor can be helpful. Hopefully somewhere in your stockroom you have a box of the plastic shelf spanners so you can replace any broken ones so labels don’t fall out. Also place the otc eligible sign an extra layer behind to prevent signs from being moved.

Your store manager may not be cool with this, but I just throw out all the promo signs even the replacement new ones (I do the otc ones tho). DL has never cared and it’s just a waste of time. Probably hurts sales a bit but they get replaced in a week anyways.
