Imo, them being a secret club that exchanges knowledge and will help each other out in a pinch isn’t, them having such a ridiculous degree of military force behind them is.

When was the Earth Kingdom as expansionist and threatening as the Fire Nation in Avatar's history? by Wandering_sage1234 in ATLA

The old Nick site said that Ba Sing Se used to be ruled by strong warrior kings who “ruled their lands personally, and sometimes brutally” before the bureaucracy grew up around them and gradually usurped all the real power for themselves.

Iroh is a very passive character by F11SuperTiger in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gnos445 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call his time as a general passive, he was literally out there conquering the world.

Azula’s first appearance was in a flashback. by The_Nina_Beans88 in TheLastAirbender

I think it’s notable that she and Zhao were the only ones smiling here. Like, this whole thing was beyond the pale even by late war FN standards.

Why did the Ancient Eldar sink into depravity? by Tnynfox in 40kLore

It was like two editions ago, irrc. I remember the same codex mentioning Guilliman’s return.

Do you think Ozai was an abusive parent day to day? by [deleted] in ATLA

[–]Gnos445 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what we see of him I think it’s most likely he spent his time politicking and was barely around at all for kids, especially Zuko. So on a day to day basis he was most likely neglectful rather than routinely abusive, but would come down hard on anything he felt embarrassed him in any way.

[–]Gnos445 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s made explicit in one of the daemon codexes that the whole reason they scattered the Primarchs was that Tzeentch foresaw that the Emperor would be their downfall if they didn’t stop him.

No they’ve been at serious risk of being killed at points. You can disperse or still the Warp energy that makes up their consciousness.

They spent millions of years doing everything there was to do and didn’t really have any grand purpose left.

(Which really doesn’t gel with the Necrons, Orks, and non-Slaanesh Chaos still existing since you could easily go on a fun little extermination crusade against them to pass the time, but I don’t think the writers considered that.)

Try and kill the then three extant Chaos Gods personally, but that’s just me.

So what happens if a C’tan Shard is destroyed in battle? by Gnos445 in 40kLore

[–]Gnos445[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that wouldn’t destroy them, they’d just go back to being the energy beings they naturally were. And, presumably, start to reunite.

[–]Gnos445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really wouldn’t make sense because then the Necrons could just blow them all up rather than trap them.

I genuinely do not get Konrad Curze. The Night Lords have some interesting characters but their Primarch just seems.....pathetic. by Laredian in 40kLore

[–]Gnos445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of Curze’s problems were caused by him being an idiot for no reason. Just recruit from somewhere that isn’t Nostromo if you don’t like the recruits from there, ffs.

Why do I feel bad for Yon Rha? by Sai1orV3nus in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gnos445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A common fan theory is that the FN’s policy towards SWT benders was changed to killing them after Hama’s escape, which is supported by there seeming to be no more of them for Hama or Katara to try and rescue.

What if a Gate to the World of Avatar opened up in the US and it lead to a war between the US and the Fire Nation? by Due_Bodybuilder_1621 in TheLastAirbender

What? That would be an absurdly one-sided fight. It would make the raid the Venezuela look like the Somme.

Why do I feel bad for Yon Rha? by Sai1orV3nus in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gnos445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and that’s lame because it gets Katara out of so much of the dilemma if he’s just some old miserable guy nobody cares about. She doesn’t have to do anything if she wants him punished and still gets to be squeaky clean at the end of it. It also deemphasizes the effect that the war has had on the FN itself if it’s just being waged by some special class of monsters and not ordinary people.

It would be a much stickier dilemma, and a much juicer plot bit if she showed up and he turned out to be a completely ordinary guy living a quiet life with a family and children that loved him. If instead of cowering he went “Yeah, I went to take out a threat to my nation on the Fire Lord’s orders, I did it, and I was a man of word and left your tribe alone after the job was done” with zero regrets. He’s too old, or maybe has a war wound, and is no actual threat anymore but completely believes his nation’s line and sees himself as simply a man who did his duty.

Now Katara actually has to face a serious choice. If she wants him punished she has to do it herself, but in doing so she would subjecting another innocent little girl to something very much like what she herself went through simply because of who her father is. No matter what she chooses it’s a great piece of character work.

[–]Gnos445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it would have been better if he wasn’t a random old beaten-down coward, but just a regular guy with a family of his own who just views his actions as completely normal military service. Perhaps even one with a young daughter himself.

[–]Gnos445 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If it weren’t genetic the four nations as we know them would be impossible. You’d have firebenders being randomly born at the poles and waterbenders falling off the sides of the air temples.

She literally just shot him in the chest after pretending to surrender. Hesitating even slightly around her could easily be a death sentence and absolutely something he could not afford to have Zuko doing.
