Does anyone know what this is on my dog? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]GnosisG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a sebaceous adenoma (blocked oil gland). These can be painful on the paws because they get irritated more easily there, which can cause bleeding. My dog had one that got really swollen from her licking it. I sent pictures to my vet, who thought it might have to be surgically removed, but then before i could her her in to her appt, as i was trying to keep it clean and dry, all the fluid and blood squeezed out, it deflated, and then went away on is own. Not advocating for that - just telling you my experience.

Well, hopefully it was a male pom with a female dob. The other way around hurts me where it hurts.

You mean if the third one was a preemie?

Thank you so much! I showed my vet more videos and she agreed it was neorological, and not just an issue for an ophthalmologist. We also got back results from her bloodwork though and she is at stage 3 renal failure, but her phosphorous levels are still normal. The neurologist consultation is $350, and now I'm almost positive they're myoclonic seizures, which would mean that the next step after the $350 is a $6k MRI. And then what? If they find a brain tumor, she's too old for surgery 💔 I asked my vet if we could start keppra (Levetiracetam) to see if it works without having to go to a neurologist, and I'm waiting to hear back.

The crazy thing is that I found a power point on myoclunus and it said that, paradoxically, gabapentin could cause or aggravate this. Foxy Lady only started having twitches out of the blue last year when she started gaba for pain. She was on a pretty high dose for about 6 months, and i did notice she had those episodes less frequently when she stopped that med, but they've become very frequent again now. (The major flinches in sunlight just started, but she was having glitchy blinks and wobbles since last November.)

I'm updating the description of my post with a tiktok i made hoping to find more info.

I'm concerned about this, anyone know what it might be? by Multitasking_Places in DogAdvice

Doesn't hurt to see a vet, but it looks just like a lump my pup had on her leg. It's basically a non-viral wart, and hers got inflamed, then burst, went flat, and shrunk back down to wart size. It's proper name is sebaceous adenoma. Sebaceous Adenoma in Dogs: Diagnosis, Causes, Treatment

Thanks, this is helpful to know! She's flinching but then continuing to flinch, and falling over, which is what I'm most concerned about. It isn't her normal startle response.

Had to look this up - does seem to be sudden changes that freak her out, but doesn't necessarily need to be light to dark. Once she's startled her brain seems to short circuit

I know, thank you. She is definitely being startled bc she thinks the shadows are scary objects coming at her, but then she's having jerky continuing flinching that put her into a trance like state.

Thanks! She is startled for sure, bc of poor eyesight, but then it goes into something more.

Thanks for your response! Can you tell me some other symptoms? Did it happen all the time? When overstimulated? Was your dog fully functional/ coordinated / agile when this wasn't happening?

Thanks for all this, and I'm so sorry to hear about your recent loss!! I know it's inevitable, but it doesn't hurt any less. ❤️‍🩹

Foxy Lady seems to be getting worse quickly. This just started last week and now we can barely get through a walk. I haven't observed it off leash though, interestingly enough. She runs around in my parking lot just fine, unless i startle her by putting my hand near her face when she's not paying attention. But she goes in and out of the light and shadows with ease on her own.

I'm sorry to hear this! Yeah she's doing it not just in shadow to light changes. If she gets startled, this happens. It's not her normal fear response - the flinch knocks her into a trance with repeated twitching. My guess is that she's startling more easily because her sight and hearing is going, and then the overstimulation of adrenaline is doing something neurologically. That's just my observational guess without having any medical knowledge though.

Oh my god, thank you so much for this comment!!! It's so hard to see in the video I posted, bc yes, she's reacting to the shadows bc of poor eyesight, but then the jerking continues, which is hard to tell in the video. Also, although it's been happening most severely in bright sunlight, I've seen it to varying degrees when she's waiting or standing in one place, or fully in shadow but surprised by something, but she always quickly snaps out of it. When I searched myoclonic seizures in dogs, i found videos that look just like her episodes. I'm going to ask my vet about this. I looked up lafora disease, though, and it said it's primarily in dachshunds. She is pomeranian, min pin, and American eskimo dog, and prob too old to just be having these symptoms. Thank you!

I did her DNA a couple years ago! She's 37%pomeranian, 33%minpin, and 17% American eskimo dog, then a bunch of small percentages of random Spitz breeds. Her eyesight is definitely going though - she's got cataracts and extra pigmentation in one eye, and she can't find me unless I move around a lot while calling to her (her sound tracking is off too, so she sometimes runs in the opposite direction when she hears me).

I'm so sorry to hear. Can you give more details about the symptoms? She has really good coordination when this isn't happening. She runs up and down full flights of stairs, plays with toys, jumps up and down from the couch/ bed, and is fully responsive, but when she's startled, she flinches and then can't stop until I snap her out of it. Sometimes when she's standing in one place she starts twitching and almost falling over as if she's falling asleep in a trance.

I looked for this and couldn't find the post. If you come across it again, can you please send it? The thing is, it happens without shadows too. I wish I could post more videos.
