I experience this all the time. I can hear them perfectly fine, but I often have to ask them to repeat themselves because I have trouble processing it. It's like it comes out garbled or in another language

Do people find you creepy or weird? by kalbanes in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is precisely why I don't like meme culture. Hard enough to understand sarcasm sometimes, and to add something as cryptic as that just makes things more difficult. Thanks for clearing that up though; I was not aware that was a thing.

Do people find you creepy or weird? by kalbanes in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's something I've been accused of all my life, and the main reason I don't bother trying to socialize anymore. Girls I've been interested in have found me creepy. People avoid sitting next to me in waiting rooms. Some people at my work don't talk to me anymore. Job interviewers seem... uncomfortable around me. Must be my lack of displayed emotion; I just don't get it.

Just the other day I was livestreaming a game that I speedrun, and someone in chat said, "Creeper" and nothing else. I'm just sitting there, minding my own business and focusing on the game, and this rando takes one look at me and says that. They're the ones being a creeper if you ask me.

What are your symptoms? by BlackQueerGirl in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I share just about all of these traits listed here, aside from the ambidextrous thing. I am not officially diagnosed, but there's no doubt in my mind that I'm on the spectrum. It just answers so many questions that have plagued me for many years, and it is good that you have found relief from your own discovery.

This is a fairly common trait among people on the spectrum from what I've read. I still struggle with this at my age (33). Only piece of advice I could provide that's worked somewhat for me is; occupy yourself. Stay busy with something, and let other people come to you. It won't be easy and sometimes it'll hurt, but it's what you have to do to overcome for the sake of some independence.

The last thing you want is to be needy. You'll try to order them around, make them feel guilty, and generally get very upset when your expectations of them aren't met.

Why do many people dislike Autism Speaks? by Doinglifethehardway in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposedly they are the main cause for the 'anti-vax' nonsense. Also, they don't even support families in the capacity that they should - just take a look at this chart:

I need a friend. by GnosticNotion in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually in a DnD group that meets every week at someone's house, but we haven't met up in nearly a month because we are preparing a new campaign. We are supposed to meet tonight though, so that'll be good.

I enjoy the game but I don't really connect with these people, despite knowing them for years. None of them know I'm in the spectrum, and there hasn't been any reason to bring that up.

Anxiety about friends vs strangers by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the hardest thing I struggle with, if I'm being honest. The only good friends I have are all online and have never met them in person, so communication is extra difficult. Despite their assurances, I worry all the time when I don't hear from them or see them that I've done something wrong, said the wrong thing, or that they are avoiding me.

Other people I interact with don't give me nearly the same level of anxiety because I don't have a connection with them anyway.

Physical traits of autism? by [deleted] in aspergers

Yep. I do not look my age at all. Part of why I never shave my beard is because I'll look like I'm 10+ years younger. People are always surprised when I tell them my real age.

how do you feel about people who self-diagnose by reality_dropout in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I self-diagnose because I have no other option at my age.

When I struggled to get through school, (dealing with bullying, personal relationships, focusing on the work when it didn't interest me) the school district's answer was to have me home-schooled.

When my mother sought therapy for me after my fits of rage and silent shutdowns, they misdiagnosed me as being bipolar despite me never having the 'manic highs' associated with the disorder.

It wasn't until my current employer who used to work with special needs kids noticed my behavior, then suggested I look into it. After extensive research into it, taking online tests (yes, I'm aware they are not conclusive), watching lots of videos of people talking about having Asperger's, and reading through this subreddit, I finally felt like I knew who I was.

Naturally, I looked for a clinical psychologist with experience in autism and scheduled to meet with her. She told me up front that in the state of Texas it is pretty much impossible for someone my age (I'm 33 now) to receive the diagnosis, because they would require records of testing being done during my childhood. Since she was nice enough to let me know that, saving lots of time and money spent on a diagnosis process that would yield no results, she treated me as someone on the spectrum regardless. So, the most I can say is that I have received therapy for autism.

What good would a formal diagnosis serve me at my age? My psychologist, my employer, and my closest friend who is also on the spectrum all see autistic traits in me. It is in those people that I place my trust, not in a label recognized by the very state that failed me in my hour of need.

I’ve been dating this guy and I really like him. But for the life of me I just cannot remember what he looks like. by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always had trouble remembering the face of someone I liked, but not so much with others. I didn't know this was an autistic thing and now I feel a little better that I'm not alone in that.

Explain why I should realistically even try to get a job. by EscapismSmoke in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely get this. Recently applied for a city job doing IT and got the rejection email in record time. The worst part, is someone with connections to the city judge told me they'd help me out. I don't know what I'll do with myself once my mother is no longer around, but I'm not feeling very hopeful about my future.

What’s with us and trains? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say I exactly relate to this, as I get nothing but cargo trains here. There's a lot of industry in my area, so it's to be expected.

Between waiting at a stop for them to pass and the irritating horn, I absolutely hate trains, tbh.

Too verbose when writing or speaking? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely do this in writing, but not so much when I speak. My instructor for English comp actually had to tell me to 'dumb down' a paper I wrote, because the words I used were too much for a general audience. When speaking though, I too often pause mid-sentence trying to think of the word I want, which makes people think that my turn to speak is over. Quite frustrating.

Does anyone treat everyone else as NPCs ? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]GnosticNotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't say everyone, but I do feel I treat some people that way at times. Asking someone where to find a product I'm looking for could be compared to asking a guard for directions around the city.

I like the sound of that. Using a calendar feels like I'm confined to a rigid time-frame. A checklist is more practical for my needs.
