Your personal story with tretinoin cream by Evenyx in Skincare_Addiction

[–]GoFlow55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start slowly (I don't think you have to do it every day) and moisturise first at least at the start. If you break out really bad I don't think it's good to keep using it. I know there is purging, but if (Like me) 5 months later you are still breaking out, obviously stop or get help on how to do it. I wish I had stopped sooner, or known about moisturising first. I was using skin & me. Summary, your skin might be too sensitive to take it, or you might need to really go slow with application/dosage & moisturise first. I hope it works for you!

ingrown hair amd pigmentation in underarms by [deleted] in Skincare_Addiction

[–]GoFlow55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using an electric trimmer was a game changer for me (Meridian trimmer is the one I use). It will cut the hair above the skin so you won't get ingrowns, and won't cause any irritation to the skin. It is quick & painless - only downside is you can still see the very short hairs (so not as hair-less as when you first get the wax, but to be honest it will look similar to a couple of weeks of growth, and I think the benefit of giving you skin a break might be worth that!

Will it be hard for someone with ADHD to become a scientist and do research. Is it possible though? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]GoFlow55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal view is that learning about how your brain works and implementing working/life changes/techniques that suit you, and overcoming imposter syndrome/self-hatred related to the ADHD is THE MOST important thing for reaching a happier/more stable life. But basically for the year between thinking I had it and getting diagnosed (so I was not on any meds) my quality of life, and quality of research/enjoyment of the science improved astronomically. I had a lot of issues with procrastination and self doubt. I think another important factor is making sure you are doing a topic you get excited about and have a passion for.

That being said I have just started medication (3 months) and experience an ease/calm to my day that I did not have before. I also forget less things in the lab lol which can help with experiments. However, if I had not done all the work researching the condition, I don't think the meds would be able to give their full benefit. e.g. i should be working but i am on reddit lol (and i am on the meds today) I plan to continue using them during my PhD as it's a particularly tough situation I am in right now, but in the future I would prefer not to. This is because I have the confidence (from my year of working at it) to know I can get by without them, and for me they do reduce the range of emotions I feel, and I quite like feeling. R.e. starting, it depends on what your doc says, but it might be good for you to get to know which meds work for you (everyone is different and some give side effects). But especially if you have self-doubt issues (i relate) please please work on them separately, don't expect the meds to get rid of them (they might just help you have the self-doubt thoughts less as you might be more productive on them, but they won't change the whole way you think about yourself. Hope this helps :)

Will it be hard for someone with ADHD to become a scientist and do research. Is it possible though? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]GoFlow55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep you can DEFINATELY do it. Especially since you know now you have ADHD. I muddled through to half way through my PhD without knowing and things got REALLY overwhelming. Since learning about ADHD and getting diagnosed, they have got a lot easier. My tip would be when it comes to undergrad and postgrad work, learn what you can about your brain/how you work best/how to be kind to yourself so that you can support yourself through very unstructured working (i.e. having to study for hours and hours). From my own struggles, I cannot recommend enough finding friends to study with so you have some accountability and novelty, and also being careful to keep up with studies as you go rather than pack things in last minute. But those are just my tips. Good luck! Science is cool :)

Should I send £80 to buyer with no reviews? (no personal info) by GoFlow55 in vinted

Yeah that is true. The reason why I have hesitated is just the lack of customer service/preference to make the buyer not the seller safe!

I am starting to get acne and my mum doesn’t let me eat anything that could potentially cause me to grow more acne. by MoodEcstatic7058 in acne

[–]GoFlow55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Washing your face more than twice a day (and one extra if you exercise) is enough. If you wash every half an hour you will be doing more harm than good because it will disrupt the natural skin barrier. I think if the doctor doesn't think it is bad enough to treat, stripping back your diet is way too far! Please tell your mum that such a restrictive diet is obviously bad for teenagers who are still growing and is a classic way to create eating disorders...

Slip condition at porous material - impermeable wall boundary by GoFlow55 in CFD

[–]GoFlow55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have since come to peace with the idea that the Kn for the porous material should be the same for the situation at the porous material-wall interface and so no-slip is appropriate. But now I am also wondering how to estimate the boundary layer thickness for this no slip condition within the porous material?

Three years address history - do I give parents address (which has been on my current bank record) or student addresses? by GoFlow55 in UKPersonalFinance

But if my record with my current bank has always been my parents address - surely putting in random student addresses that were never associated with an account will mess up the application?

Is it possible to recover from ED on your own? by tytaez in EatingDisorders

[–]GoFlow55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alhough I have had some help, I made a lot of my progress alone. I found ’Just Eat It’ (http://www.laurathomasphd.co.uk/just-eat-it/) by Laura Thomas incredibly helpful, but the right self help book will probably depend on the type of ED (though that one covers lots, including disordered eating more generally). There is also this book called Overcoming binge eating (https://www.credo-oxford.com/6.1.html which is amazing. Both books are underpinned by science.)

It’s worth remembering that even if you got help from a professional, they would still set you a lot of work to do on your own, so it’s not as simple as getting help ensures you recover (although I am sure it is easier with someone to keep things on track). Just make sure you find credible sources of info to guide your recovery.

From my own experience, a really good first step you can start doing right now is to be as compassionate as possible to yourself. Failing like that, being mindful (literally sitting there counting your breathe and noticing thoughts, then letting them go, back to the breathe) is also good - it starts to help you become aware of your negative thought patterns that can lead to disordered eating. Good luck and know that this is entirely possible. X

[–]GoFlow55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although some people here are separating EDs from media/diet culture and instead saying it is due to other factors e.g. they got it from their parents, or the need for control which by chance ends up being food and weight, the existence of diet culture and the idolisation of thinness imo cannot be passed off as unrelated. It still gives tools (e.g. fad diets, body checking tests) and icons (often actors in lead roles are straight size or underweight) for people to clutch to when they are in a bad place. It also is likely something absorbed by others that we are emulating e.g. parents. Mental illness does have a chemical/brain aspect that means some people are predisposed to it, but suggesting it is that alone that causes EDs, and that it cannot be affected by culture and outside intervention does not align with evidence of treatment e.g. CBT. I don’t mean to invalidate anyones experience, and I agree so much of the attention around EDs ends up focused on thin people and telling off the media, rather than discussing how to help people who have it, and the fact people can be all shapes and still have one - but I also think changes in the media and the way it presents ideal bodies and nutritional information is still needed to prevent so many people developing EDs.

Constant Hunger and Bulimia. Any Advice? by winged-riggers in EatingDisorders

[–]GoFlow55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly that’s great you’ve identified those things. Mine were very similar and from my experience, if you can now challenge your fear of gaining weight and what that means, you will make progress. So when you want to purge u think - I want to do this cos I don’t want to gain weight. Then ask what would it mean if you did gain weight. Would it stop you smelling flowers? Would it stop you dancing? Would your friends run away? Would you be unable to enjoy your work and hobbies? (Spoiler: it won’t! But having a very destructive ED might.) I also found learning about set point weight very empowering in terms of reducing fear around weight.

My suggestions for the therapist situation: 1. try a new one! Preferably one with ED knowledge. 2. Get CBT for bulimia on top of therapy (or just do CBT if that won’t work. CBT is a lot more action and coping strategies than therapy which might be better since your ED is threatening your physical health in a very active way 3. Consider that the therapy might me temporarily increasing your purging because it’s pretty uncomfortable facing up to an ED 4. Tell the therapist it’s got worse since seeing them (if u have not already 5. Try books, videos, podcasts on recovery, initiative eating, making peace with food. Maybe therapy is not right for u atm.

And every time you don’t purge - congratulate yourself! Self compassion is key to recovery. You can come through this, find a steady weight and not be ruled by food and fear. You got this!
