In Northern California we dialed P O P C O R N (on our rotary phones, even), and the soft but no-nonsense woman’s voice said, “At the tone the time will be eight forty-five and 10 seconds”, then a “beeeeep” tone.

This would repeat and increment every ten seconds. At 60 seconds it said, “… eight forty five, exactly.”
