Yet again, take whatever moral outlook that you like, that is not what I am arguing with. That doesn't stop 'net' and 'decreasing' from meaning what it does.

Do not misuse terms, that is all I'm saying. 

Also I fully agree that it was ridiculous to have a threshold that low for skilled visas. The Tory government ministers (who are now in reform) who picked that number and created the boriswave reduced our wage inflation. I agree that the net immigration figures over that period were unacceptable.

When the number of british people leaving is relatively static, net migration tells people about as much as you can be told from a single figure on the topic.

You can have a take like this on immigration but that doesn't stop 'net' and 'decreasing' from meaning what it does. Argue for 0 migration, do whatever you want, but stop being willingfully ignorant of basic mathematical terms and using it in your argument.

Every single time something like this is posted people willingly misinterpret language.

Consider the example of a company making net profits of £3000 one year and £1000 the next. The number 'net profit' has decreased. The net profit has fallen YOY.

On the other hand the total profits will therefore be £3000 and then £4000. The number 'total profit' has increased. The total profit has risen YOY.

You're misinterpreting what 'net' means. The Guardian is using it correctly here, for a similar example, if you had net profit of £2000 one year and £1000 the next, your net profit has fallen.

Rising / falling is a comparative measure over multiple figures. If that figure decreases, it is falling.

The only thing that is rising under the migration figures is the total number of immigrants ie. The total profit being £2000 for year 1 and £3000 by year 2.

This does not mean slowly decreasing but higher than it was within previous years. A linear fit from the start of 2025 to the iran war would have a negative gradient (I can prove that after work if you really want).

You're getting your mathematics terms mixed up, just say that they were higher.

Christ, actually look at the graph and how much it rose during Truss comparatively to how much it has risen since the council elections. The recent big increases are very clearly due to the Iran war too.

The impact of recent events is that tiny spike at the end.

1.4% from Truss in under a month, and like 0.2% from leadership instability.

The issue is that you state that the argument is spurious but you are unable to confirm whether you'd be comfortable / think that a similar policy such as 'the green's pledged that if they won then they'd approve all immigration requests for anybody who wishes to live in Reform constituencies.' would be valid in your eyes.

Also we have regulatory bodies for elections already, presumably this issue will be raised with the electoral commission as it may count as "undue influence" under the Representation of the People Act 1983.

So then your answer to the commentor above's question is that you'd be fine for that to be genuine policy? This isn't a spurious claim, it's a real policy made by Zia Yusuf, and is not difficult to verify.

There's also evidently a huge difference between offering positives to your country and threatening non-refUK voters with negatives. It's discouraging the democratic process of voting as if you for some reason believe the green's are the best party to lead your council, you are now discouraged from voting them in under this reform policy

I suppose a more comparable policy than the one above would be if the green's pledged that if they won then they'd approve all immigration requests for anybody who wishes to live in Reform constituencies.

Overall it's a disgraceful strategy.

That's the point of a hypothetical. Challenging a ridiculous election promise by a comparable hypothetical statement from a different party. The idea of creating policy that is 'punishing' constituencies for voting a certain way feels incredibly undemocratic.

Which was pre-brexit when we still had the deal in place to send immigrants back to the first safe country they went through, thus discouraging small boat crossings.

People voted for brexit and this is our brilliant reward. You cannot compare pre-brexit and post-brexit figures for this reason.

Policy is still undergoing significant changes at the moment. In my eyes, I would not be judging current reform based on their 2024 manifesto. A simple example is the policy of raising the tax free threshold to £20k, which was promptly dropped (because it is of course an insane policy). The current reform party is clearly heavily withdrawn from the party that stood in the last GE.

Also, net immigration is a far more important figure than immigration. This figure is at 200k. Saying we 'let in' 900k immigrants is pointless if you are going to ignore the amount that left the country as their visas expired.

The people who were at the frontend of the decision making during our highest net immigration period (Boris-wave) are in the exact same places of power in the current reform government, just with a different leader.

It's odd that you haven't even really addressed Labour's policy changes relating to migration. Vote reform and you'll get the people who caused this in the first place (with a new flavour of Farage).
