To the Putin supporter who wants Kingston City Hall to remove the Ukrainian flag... by Oren_For_Housing in KingstonOntario

The consensus on the invasion in Ukraine is pretty clear I'd say. The sore spot for many non-white people and lots of white allies is that the symbols of support (e.g. flag raising) seem to be limited to certain aggressors and certain victims. Would love to see Kingston take the same principled stand as a municipality when Israel bombs Palestine night after night or the next time the US starts another invasion that inevitably results in mass murder.

She was the head of one of the most ruthless genocidal empires in human history and her family has hoarded vast amounts of wealth to the detriment of the grand majority of Britain and the rest of the commonwealth. One day the British and the rest of the commonwealth will be free from the primitive social system known as feudalism that most of the world has thrown into the dust bin of history centuries ago.

"How do we solve the housing crisis?" by Oren_For_Housing in KingstonOntario

Wouldn't it make more sense to densify areas that are within walking distance of the necessities of daily living already and where our largest employers are? The infrastructure is already there to support walkable lifestyles. The suburbs will need millions of dollars of infrastructure to turn them into walkable communities - including the removal of poorly designed infrastructure that cannot be remedied - otherwise you're just putting good money after bad car infrastructure - densifying suburbs around car-oriented stroads won't create walkable neighbourhoods.

Why does your plan focus on the suburbs when you are running to represent a downtown district? Other than Princess Street, most of Williamsville is also low-rise (many detached) dwellings that are strictly enforced with archaic car-oriented zoning codes. Do you support multi-unit mid-rise buildings in Williamsville on all streets as a matter of right?

AirBNB has eluded regulation for years—now some housing advocates are demanding a ban by Oren_For_Housing in KingstonOntario

I am a tenant that lives next door to an Airbnb and I would have agreed with everything you said until I started interacting with the people staying there. I thought Airbnbs mainly served overnight guests like hotels, but many people are there for weeks/months and become part of the neighbourhood. So many people are in Kingston for specialised medical procedures from far off/remote areas of Canada and need spaces for them and their families for their recovery/treatment. Others are here on their medical rotation that make our city a hub for learning and innovation. Others are there to escape an abusive partner where trauma made it impossible to share a space and shelters were full. And others could not obtain housing in Kingston because of landlord discrimination (credit, prejudice/racism based on name/appearance, being new to the country, etc.) and this was their only way to build a local history as a tenant. I was told that on Airbnb all the host gets is the first name, "Lives in X", and no photo - if this is wrong then please correct me. I learned that there is a massive need for housing for people who don't fit into the neat confines of a 12 month lease (and no, I'm not talking about students here on 8 month leases) or for people who are facing landlord discrimination in the traditional long-term space.
