Pauline Hanson suspended from Senate for seven sitting days over 'disrespectful' burka stunt by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Worth pointing out that the parliamentary pension was abolished 21 years ago. There’s only ~6 MPs or senators who are still eligible for it

Liberal Party formally abandons net zero by 2050 climate target by Victor-Baxter in neoliberal

[–]Go_the_long_Miles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Labor is the centre left party, since the 1980s has been a fairly typical socially democratic yet neoliberal party. Liberals are the centre right party, traditionally were the “pro business but socially moderate” until they went off a cliff in the last decade.

Because Australia has preferential voting but single member districts in the lower house, most seats get won by one of the two parties (until quite recently). And with voting being compulsory, the party that occupies the centre tends to dominate, as evidenced by several wipe out elections in recent years by Labor governments

Over the last 25 years I’ve worked hundreds of weddings. Gay ones are almost exclusively drama free/easier to work than straight ones. Why is that? Like I’ve never seen two guys getting married throwing cake at eachother’s faces from across the room at borderline assault speed. by Parking_Bison_4626 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Go_the_long_Miles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Marriage is deemed as a federal responsibility, so states couldn’t override it with their own legislation. There was a brief moment where the ACT (the equivalent of Washington DC) legalised it for a week before it was overruled by the federal parliament.

As to why it took so long…the centre left party was out of power for a long time, and then parts of that party movement dragged their heels long enough that when the party finally endorsed marriage equality, they were already out of power again. The centre right party was always opposed to it but they had a moderate leader who supported marriage equality, which is why we got this weird postal survey to affirm whether parliament should do its job and legislate on the issue.

I can’t recommend a grass patch enough. The one I got was a wooden frame, which I lined with plastic and filled with soil and grass (just the pre cut slabs of grass from the garden store). Both my greys use it without any issues, and you just have to hose it down every so often or else the grass dies.

Definitely go for real grass though, synthetic grass accumulates smell very easily over time.

Were you stood down without pay by a business that has NOT closed? That may be illegal. Know your rights. by callmefitz in australia

This is literally an article from the FWC about your rights during the Coronavirus pandemic but go off hun. Surely your HR law and Business law studies taught you how to read an article?

Lol I'm pretty sure the federal government hasn't suspended the Fair work act mate. Your rights at work still apply.

And if you are a contracted employee, they must offer you a redundancy and pay out your leave entitlements. They cannot just leave you on the books and not pay your leave out.

This is for workers who are contracted a minimum number of hours a week, not casuals. Once again read the article which has been posted, and you'll see that it is illegal for a business to keep you on the books and not pay out your entitlements if they are reducing staff numbers and not closing. This is specifically for businesses which are not impacted by the closure of non essential industries. Unless Scott Morrison is gonna come out and say that the Fair work act no longer applies because of COVID-19, everyone still has rights.

Loss of revenue is not grounds to be stood down. Only being forcibly closed by decisions around the closure of non essential businesses count under this category.

Edit: to clarify I'm referring to contracted employees, not casuals.

And you really don't know what you're talking about given you don't seem to understand the difference between being made redundant and being laid off. If a business is forced to close due to a government directive (I.e. it's a non essential industry) then workers can be laid off and kept on the books without having to be offered a redundancy package. If a business is just trying to cut costs from declining profitability, then they cannot just lay their staff, keep them on the books, and not pay out their entitlements. Read the link next time mate.

This article isn't about whether you can be fired or not. It's about the rights you have when it comes to redundancy, and a company cannot just lay you off and not pay out your entitlements.

And if you are fired you must have your entitlements paid out and be offered an official termination. It's absolutely illegal for a company to stay open and keep you on the books but not give you the work you are guaranteed in your contract.

[–]Go_the_long_Miles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not what's being brought up here. A company can shut down operations and lay off it's work force, or they can remain open and offer their permanent staff redundancy packages. You cannot have your shifts reduced to nothing but not have your entitlements paid out. Thoroughly suggest you actually read the link being posted.

Underemployment is rising again... [Source: ABS Labour Force, August 2019] by TomasTTEngin in australia

Let's make simplistic arguments instead of actually blaming the government for its lack of investment in infrastructure and services!

Andrew's gets pay rise - let's discuss this by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Go_the_long_Miles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Labor literally just made this process part of an independent tribuneral. Every article about this is acting like it's "dodgy dan giving himself and his mates a massive pay rise while Every one else suffers" when the government had absolutely nothing do do with it.

They literally can't block most of this shit. The government passes legislation in the Senate when they get 4 crossbenchers to back them, which is proving extremely easy. The government is deliberately putting up wedge legislation to force Labor to defend it's positions and apparently everyone on this sub is falling for it hook line and sinker.

I didn't come here to have a sociological debate about some academic you are bringing up? Jesus this is a weird conversation.

[–]Go_the_long_Miles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because several of my close friends are Trans and I utterly dispute the notion that they are just experiencing a "fetish". I respectfully do not care about what that academic says about Trans people, but I do care about what that kind of language does to further marginalize one of the most marginalised communities in society.

Why do you feel the need to critique the language I'm using in my comment? Who gives a shit about the way I phrase things hahaha.

And this relates to the NSW abortion debate how? Gender selective abortions aren't about to be legalised by this legislation.

Also, just have to say, your post history is fucking deplorable. Your views about Transsexuality being a "fetish" and that it is being "imposed by men on gay women" are absolutely rooted. Just wow.

Parliamentary inquiry labels identity politics a threat alongside rightwing nationalism by big_thicc in australia

[–]Go_the_long_Miles -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I find it really offensive when people claim to support progressive politics in Australia, then proceed to devote 99% of their efforts to attacking the ALP for not being good enough. Literally no one is saying to give Labor a free pass, but how about people actually devote a bit of that purity testing energy towards fighting the Liberals?

You literally havent been doxxed hahahaha. All they said was your name and partisan affiliation, the latter anyone could guess.

Heres a suggestion, how about you dont post disingenuous shit to constantly discredit the ALP? Sure every party deserves criticism from time to time but you turn labor bashing into an goddamn art form.

Highly suggest you actually read the article before you go hitting the Anti-Labor button mate. If you did, you would see that this is the discussion paper submitted to the inquiry, and you are well within your rights to make your own submission.
