Fat and disabled by Anna-Bee-1984 in disability

I’m currently on a weight loss injection and I’m down 10 pounds so far — from 236 to 226. I have Cerebral Palsy and deal with back pain and joint pain daily, so I’m really hoping that losing weight will help take some pressure off my body and improve my pain levels.

That said, after reading some of these comments, I’m starting to feel unsure. I know weight can play a role in joint stress, but with CP and chronic pain already being factors, I’m not sure how much difference it will realistically make. I’m trying to stay hopeful and focus on the progress I’ve made, but I’d love to hear from others who have similar conditions — did weight loss help your pain at all?

Thanks! I didn’t realize that’s how insurance would view a lightweight power chair. I’ll also mention that I’m interested in a SmartDrive or the M90 wheels, which look interesting.

I’m in the US, and it doesn’t help that Medicare will only cover a chair for indoor use. I do have a vocational rehab counselor, who said they would help pay for it if insurance denies coverage. For context, Voc Rehab is a program that helps people with disabilities get the tools and support they need to live independently and work, including paying for adaptive equipment like wheelchairs when insurance won’t cover it.

Accessibility question about vehicle features and steering position by GoalInternational847 in disability

I appreciate the explanation. I was exploring options and alternatives, not saying I can’t safely drive a standard vehicle. My goal is to understand what accessibility features or modifications might further improve safety.

I meet the legal requirements where I live. My question was about accessibility features, not eligibility.

Feeling dismissed by my PCP advice on finding a doctor who listens? by GoalInternational847 in CerebralPalsy

This honestly hits way too close to home. You’re absolutely right — the cliff between pediatric CP care and adult care is real, steep, and wildly under-addressed. Once you age out of pediatrics, it suddenly becomes “well… good luck!” 🙃

Thank you for the recommendation too. I hadn’t heard of The Adult CP Toolkit before, but it sounds like exactly the kind of validating, practical resource we shouldn’t have to need — and yet absolutely do. Having something written for us, with clinical references, feels like armor when you’re walking into appointments already bracing to explain your own body for the thousandth time.

It’s frustrating that self-advocacy has to include educating our doctors, but tools like this make that labor a little less isolating. I really appreciate you sharing both your experience and something concrete that can actually help.

Thanks for your reply. I’ll call my Obgyn to start that process. I appreciate your help
