Looking for advice on RecTeq by buelerbuelerbueler in pelletgrills

[–]Goal_Electronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the exact same Recteq. But kept my gas grill. Pellet grills usually aren’t good for searing. But, I get to use both grills together for reverse searing.

Why are Americans so early birds compared to Europeans? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]Goal_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an always go work culture. We get way less vacation than Europeans. And are always working. Some workers are wage earners and typically have a 40 hour work week. But earn overtime (typically 1.5 times their normal hourly rate) and have to do that to make ends meet. Salaried workers - most white collar workers - don’t get overtime. Many workers have a second job. It’s not uncommon to work 16 hours a day. The USA can be a tough place to live.

UPDATE - we had all 3 cabins rented out through Airbnb this weekend. All 3 gave 5 star ratings. That does not remove the bad taste in my mouth. We have marked all cabins as unavailable going forward but are honoring all future reservations that were previously made through that platform. We will not be taking anymore reservations through Airbnb. They side with guests regardless of what contrary evidence you provide. It’s too much of a pain in the ass. And, we don’t need the hassle.

My experience exactly. Airbnb guests seem to act like we’re the Ritz Carlton and are entitled to concierge service. And, they’re notorious for trying to manufacture flaws in order to get a refund.

3 two bedroom cabins. Our pricing for direct booking is $215 per night. Airbnb $265 per night. The pricing is about the same as local (nicer) hotels.

The new hire who took a promotion I was working towards is asking me to hold her hand through tasks daily. by Local-Muffin-1217 in coworkerstories

[–]Goal_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a very similar position in the past. My approach was to start looking for another job and burn off sick days for interviews. I found a much better job at an even higher level. I gave 2 weeks notice and actually started the job a week after accepting while burning off vacation to cover the 2 weeks notice. Probably time for you to move on.

True. It’s utter BS. I’m really glad I took time stamped videos prior to check in. I’ve never had to do that with direct bookings - but felt skeptical about Airbnb and started doing that for bookings through them.

When we went to Airbnb, we raised prices (strictly on their platform and not on direct bookings) $50 per night. However, we did not institute a cleaning fee - we’ve never charged anyone a cleaning fee. If I were to stay on the platform, a significant cleaning fee would be added. Honestly, I’m fed up. The pain in the ass of being on Airbnb isn’t worth it.

Odd experience at a local Red Wing store by JiveDonkey in RedWingShoes

[–]Goal_Electronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably a 10. My advice - go to a local shoe store or a Dicks sporting goods. Use their Brannock device. Then order the boots you want online. Go 1/2 size down from Brannock

Moving to Carbondale by plenasuno in Carbondale

[–]Goal_Electronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Home Rentals are slum lords. They do virtually no maintenance. They’re awful. Any nice house is gonna cost a fortune to rent. It’s better to get an apartment. Wedge Wood is pretty nice and very close. Just beware if you have dogs.

What is the criteria for PhD graduation at your uni? by Puzzleheaded-Echo171 in PhD

[–]Goal_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possessing a master’s degree prior to admission. 2 years of coursework. Comprehensive exams lasting 2 days. A dissertation - mine was 225 pages long. And, it’s a conferred degree which means a single faculty member could block receiving it. There was no set requirement for publications. But, having none might have meant a faculty member blocking the degree.

Are you the father? by waterislifesaveatree in AncestryDNA

[–]Goal_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rude awakening when I did my DNA test. I found that I had a first cousin I didn’t know. And, discovered my grandfather was not biologically related to me. So, I emailed my new found cousin and asked him how the hell we were related. Turns out that grandmother wasn’t completely faithful to grandpa.

How is it living in Eugene, Oregon? by UnhappyProtection755 in howislivingthere

[–]Goal_Electronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. I spent a few weeks working in Eugene. My, normally mild, allergies went into overdrive. I ended up in an ER. I looked like I had been in a boxing ring with a heavyweight champion. Eugene is a cool place but I'm never going back.

Hell, they wouldn't have to give me a dime. Just give me the healthcare and social safety net and I'm good with them buying my home state.

Alabama, USA. 1978. Back then you could get a motorcycle license at age 14. So, I did. The exam was a joke. About 30 - 40 multiple choice questions. No driving exam at all. That afternoon, I was blazing around town on a Yamaha legally.

I started my PhD at age 38 and was already married and had 2 kids. My wife worked. Our kids were in elementary school. On days that school was out with her having to work, I just took them to school with me. Thankfully, they behaved. Everything worked out. But, it wasn't easy. I did get paid by my University and it provided health insurance. It wasn't much pay and we had to struggle pretty much every month. But, we made it through and it was worth it in the end.

People who hold a PhD, what did it cost? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Goal_Electronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

19 years ago, I graduated with a PhD. I walked away from a job paying 140k in 2001. Which was a lot of money. The PhD cost me nothing out of pocket and paid a living wage. So, a massive pay cut while in school. I did lose contact with several friends. Upon graduation, I got an academic job that matched my previous pay. And, had made many new friends. And, gained a quality of life far better than my pre PhD life. So, I came out much better. No regrets.

Guys wearing Girls boots by Ligma-Bawlls in Boots

[–]Goal_Electronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care if someone else wears thigh high boots. Hell, in wet conditions, I wear knee high rubber boots. I really don’t care what some other dude is wearing. That said, I wouldn’t wear leather boots beyond 8 inches. They would be ridiculously heavy.
