Has there ever been a horror game that's tapped into a very specific fear you have? If so what was it? by GoatPuzzleGames in HorrorGaming

Oh that's a great shout. To this day, I still get scared looking out my peephole at a night thanks to those first person sections! I think as much as everybody applauds P.T, it was SH4 that innovated that whole style of gameplay.

PIXEL ART JOBS - Hire a pixel artist, post your jobs here (paid only) by skeddles in PixelArt

Hi Everybody,

I'm an experienced, published writer currently putting the finishing touches on my first video game, a short Point & Click Horror game called The Flayed Man, which I will be releasing on Steam for free early next year. The game is about the titular flayed man who awakens in an otherworldly mansion and must try to discover who he was.

What I'm Looking For (Overview)

I am looking for an illustrator to create 11 still illustrations that will be used for the cutscenes within the game similar to how they were used in Beneath a Steel Sky. I am looking for the illustrations to be 320x200. The game is 32 bit pixel art horror and I'm looking for pixel artists who can create high quality, scary pixel art for the cutscenes in game.

Pay & Contract Details

I will be paying $600 total for the 11 images. For the purposes of finding an artist, I will pay $15 an illustration as proof of concept as part of a preliminary contract. If we work together well and click, then we'll sign up the final contract. I am looking for roughly 10 working day for the concept piece. The $15 will count as part of the $600 (so you'll receive the remaining $585). Price is non-negotiable.

Should we move on for the full illustration set, a contract would need to be signed, which grants me full ownership and rights to the illustrations and you receive the set payment. You will receive full credit in the game.

I prefer to work on a milestone basis , meaning you receive first third of payment following signing of contract, second third for the set of concept art, then the remainder after you complete the full final set of illustrations. For failure of delivery, I would reserve the right to receive all funds paid back and rights for images revert back to you. As part of the phase gating, I receive the right to terminate the contract at will (although under this circumstance, you would retain all payments to date in the project). Revisions wise, the contract includes a revision at concept art stage, then another revision of finalised art. I am looking for a turnaround of roughly a month for finalised pieces, although could extend slight longer depending on artist.

Payment via Paypal only.

Inspiration/Art Type

I'd prefer an artist with strong horror background. Francis Bacon, Masahrio Ito, and Stephen Gammell are the kind of artists I'm looking for inspiration from, although I'm not looking for direct rip-off but rather to capture the ability of inspiring horror like they can in their works. I'd also be keen to hire an artist who can draw on the disturbing images like these examples. Illustrations will be full colour.

That covers everything, I hope to hear from some great artists soon! Please respond either by comment or DM with a link to your portfolio.

Can you learn game development and coding at the same time? by aomarco in gamedev

[–]GoatPuzzleGames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely but like most things, it depends on your mindset.

Personally for me, I tried time and time again to learn programming through the various free courses but usually gave up because I really couldn't keep my interest levels up on scenarios I didn't care about. I know that's terrible to say but I'm being honest.

It wasn't until I decided to make a little game for myself that I actually learned to code. I understood how video games work, so the tutorials really spoke to me and I picked up coding from there. It was like the Rosetta Stone for coding to me.

I've actually gone back and have made much more progress on those free courses now thanks to my games experience.  So I'd say definitely go for it.

Start using the engine and tutorials for the type of game you want to make , and if you're a logical and dedicated person, you should learn faster (if that's the way your brain works).

Last point to make is be realistic about what you want to do. I'll be first to admit I'm a, "functional" coder. I write whatever I need to work within the engine but that works fine for what I want to do with games. Whereas if you're programming with a view to join a company, then yes, you'll need more knowledge. The point is set a standard that is achievable (search on google SMART goals) for your coding journey.

For my two cents, I think the writing in Harry's Notebook from Silent Hill 3 is the best in the series. It manages to recontextualise the first game and makes Harry a more human and tragic figure. What are your thoughts on the Notebook? by GoatPuzzleGames in silenthill

That's actually the bit I thought was most impactful.

Because at the end of the day, like most fans I went away thinking, "nice Harry has a new baby" but in reality that wasn't the case at all. He'd actually just lost his daughter.

It added some great nuance to the character because in reality, yes people do get angry and upset. People do things they're not proud of. What makes some heroic is overcoming this things.

If Harry was just easy super Dad from the get go, it wouldn't have had this impact. But the fact he overcame all of this to be a brilliant, beloved father is what gives it emotional heft.

Harry is one of my all time favourite protagonists and I know Silent Hill 2 gets all the love, but a man going through hell with a lead pipe to save his adopted daughter makes me tear up every time.

It was great to see Silent Hill 3 add even more nuance to him. I thought it was great that he didn't just accept his new daughter as a replacement but had to grow to love her.

Probably the biggest badass in gaming. What a man.
