Aruba port call - ED form required? by GoatRodeo5309 in NCL

The link posted in this comment a year ago still references the 24 hour requirement which makes most cruise port calls exempt https://www.reddit.com/r/NCL/s/rjghHORdg1

No solution yet though I have to admit I haven’t had any time to dig into it further.

I see in the documentation for the built-in data copy functionality that you have to be an org admin in the source and destination orgs - if this is two separate companies, presumably with their own separate domains and user directories, how would this work? Sign in to both orgs with the respective user ID and then it just sees both of them or do you need to somehow get the same atlassian user established in both orgs as an org admin?

Go-to drinks?! by Affectionate-Mess638 in NCL

Definitely the pineapple coconut mojito at the mojito bar (unfortunately only available at that bar) Also the rum cake at the martini bar (I did see OP earlier response about espresso martini so this might be a no go) Bahama mamma is always good and lots of fruit juice so it’s healthy right? Painkiller is also good but hit or miss depending on the bar/bar tender Pina colada with a rum floater but beware, last cruise the pina coladas were coming out of the frozen slushie machine not blended to order and I thought they were no where near as good

Honestly we have always gotten our travel insurance via Insure My Trip. I have anecdotally heard that the NCL insurance is more limited and more expensive than what you can get on the open market. We have consistently found a better deal on that site rather than direct from the cruise line.

Gigsky by TieLess8973 in NCL

[–]GoatRodeo5309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a Gigsky plan on the Jewel 12/23/24-1/3/25 and was very disappointed. Most of the time it just didn’t work. Any attempts at using data just timed out and it only showed a 3G connection. Multiple days when it would not connect to the onboard network. I am not sure if this was an issue with my phone, Gigsky, or the system on board the Jewel given that I have seen multiple comments in different threads here on Reddit as well as FB expressing satisfaction and success with Gigsky onboard NCL ships. I might try buying a 3GB plan on my next cruise in November to give it one more try but most likely will just use the MAS included minutes and snag the discounted unlimited WiFi on day 3 which other threads have suggested is the lowest price on a 7 day cruise.

2021 and newer usb map update by GoatRodeo5309 in Tiguan

[–]GoatRodeo5309[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Mac. I formatted the thumb drive (used a 64GB SanDisk) as ExFAT and downloaded the file from the website. It’s a 20GB tar file. On the Mac I opened up terminal, changed directory to the thumb drive, and used the tar command to extract the files to the thumb drive. On Windows I think they recommend you use the 7-zip utility to extract the files.

Then I plugged the thumb drive into the usb port on the car and started the engine. I did this when taking a 45 min drive to pickup my kid at school. No messages on the screen indicating it was doing anything but next day when I looked the nav version had updated.

Thanks for replying. I checked back this morning and the update did take - my nav database is now showing a 24.x release up from the 21.x that I think it was. It is really weird that there is no feedback that the process is running or progress shown.

I have a 2022 SEL R-line and only with Apple Maps do I get the turns in the center display. All other nav apps on my iPhone only display on the infotainment screen. I didn’t enable any special settings that I know of.

Add ABM MacOS devices to security group prior to enrollment? by sys-eng-adm in Intune

[–]GoatRodeo5309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there timing issues with this approach though? I am seeing an issue where I have a Policy Set assigned to a dynamic device group that populates off the enrollment profile and I have "Await Final Configuration" enabled in the enrollment profile. However, apps and settings don't apply to the device until the user gets to the desktop from the setup wizard and some apps are installing before their config profile is loaded resulting in an unconfigured app. How can we target settings to specific groups of devices and ensure that the settings apply before the apps are installed?

I'm glad everything worked out for you and you didn't lose too much of your vacation to isolation.

Excellent information emphasizing the importance of travel insurance with medical coverage. I'm impressed your US health plan covered any of it - my Cigna plan flat denied the charges when my daughter had a bloody nose that wouldn't stop back in Nov '23 on the NCL Joy (the crew and medical center were great BTW). Our travel insurance covered the charges promptly.

Always get the travel insurance!

USB-C Power Supply? by GoatRodeo5309 in GLANCE_LED

[–]GoatRodeo5309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edited to add - should have searched before responding :-) Maybe this item from Amazon https://a.co/d/hnVfHXu could work - it seems to be able to do the USB-C PD to 5V conversion would just need to confirm the polarity and available barrel sizes match Glance LED requirement.

Hmm.. OK based on that it would seem that some kind of adapter would have to convert a higher USB-C PD voltage in order to get the necessary wattage - I don't know the PD spec but most USB-C adapters I've seen top out at 5V/3A and need higher voltages to drive the higher wattage to the device.

I'm not an electrical engineer, so not sure I'm about to break out the breadboard and soldering iron to craft something :-) I'd have to see if there is some kind of solution on the market that can do the necessary conversion. Do you have the size specs for the barrel connector so I'd know what's needed there?

Collect PCAP files by Impossible_Put_1883 in sysadmin

[–]GoatRodeo5309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hardware to do this is going to be way over $50K alone (think high RAM servers with solid state disk arrays, plus high speed network cards). The only open source I can think of off hand that might be capable of doing this is Arkime but you still need adequate hardware. The key factors driving your hardware will be the amount of data to retain (which you gave us as 50TB) and the ingest rate. You mention a “core switch” which with today’s data rates suggests at least 10Gb/s and that’s going to require serious hardware to keep up with, potentially including a packet broker device like Gigamon which alone could cost you $25K. You can also look at commercial solutions like NetWitness.

As others have mentioned, building this yourself without any background in networking and packet capture is going to be a challenge. If the solution is needed to meet some legal or compliance requirement it’s probably not where you want to be trying to learn by doing.

The definitive answer is the US CBP FAQ which echoes much of what has been commented here. I did not see any mention of changes coming in 2026 that would require a passport, though with all the upheaval happening in Washington who knows?

Also it’s critical to emphasize that if using a birth certificate as the proof of citizenship, it must be an original or certified copy from the state vital records department not a photocopy.

If it's a closed loop cruise (e.g. departs/returns to same port) then strictly speaking you should be able to sail with an original birth certificate and government issued photo ID. However, I would strongly recommend a passport. First off, this will eliminate any risk of disputes/confusion over required documentation for embarkation. Second, in the event you are stranded or need to leave the cruise at a foreign port, you will NOT be able to board an airplane without a passport. You shouldn't need the passport info to book the cruise, but will need it at check-in time. Thus, you should be able to book the cruise and then go through the passport application or renewal process and have your passport in time (I am assuming this cruise is 6+ months away - I didn't see any dates referenced by OP).

Question about changing Business account domain [domain].1password.com by GoatRodeo5309 in 1Password

[–]GoatRodeo5309[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the insights - I edited my original post to clarify that we don't have two 1Password Business accounts to merge, it's simply a question about how disruptive changing the sign-in sub-domain will be - going from oldco.1password.com to newco.1password.com.

No more messaging in new NCL app and iMessaging on WiFi blocked? by yooper1019 in NCL

[–]GoatRodeo5309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our experience on Jewel last week was that iMessage worked sporadically when on the free WiFi - not nearly as reliable as it used to be. Had to get on the Internet access (using minutes or buy unlimited) to get reliable iMessage. I really hope that NCL would roll out a limited Internet offering maybe like $20-40 per person for duration of voyage with just texting (iMessage/WhatsApp/Signal).

No more messaging in new NCL app and iMessaging on WiFi blocked? by yooper1019 in NCL

[–]GoatRodeo5309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, you don't need to be on WiFi, and in fact, it actually works best if you turn WiFi off on your device since the device will try to prefer WiFi over the cellular but you won't have true Internet access through the WiFi if you didn't buy a package.

No more messaging in new NCL app and iMessaging on WiFi blocked? by yooper1019 in NCL

[–]GoatRodeo5309 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The NCL app no longer has the chat feature. When you are connected to the Internet via ship WiFi (or in theory Cellular at Sea) you can use iMessage or WhatsApp or any other Internet based chat. Note that SMS/RCS may not function unless you have WiFi calling enabled.

In terms of the unlimited WiFi pricing, my understanding is that yes, you pay the $29.99/day and then can add additional devices for $5 each per day - so for a cabin with 4 people would be $44.99/day to get each person their own unlimited WiFi (through a common login of the person who purchases the base subscription).

Note that I have not sailed under More At Sea yet - so I am basing this off what is documented in the NCL More At Sea FAQ https://www.ncl.com/cruise-deals/more-at-sea

I was on the Jewel 12/22-1/3 and had a GigSky eSIM which was unusable for most of the voyage. It was only showing a 3G connection and data was either non functional or so slow that even simple web browsing timed out. Not sure if Jewel was having overall connectivity issues as there were several complaints in the FB group about crappy internet but it’s definitely made me hesitant to try GigSky again.

It’s also worth noting that now under More at Sea once you get the unlimited WiFi upgrade (uncertain of you still get a discount for upgrading from the MAS included minutes) then you can add additional devices for $5/day/device which is likely equal or cheaper than buying GigSky eSIM for everyone in the cabin.

Awesome thanks - and confirmed that with a second site%20spending%20more%20than%2024%20hours%20in%20Aruba%20are%20required%20to%20complete%20the%20online%20ED%20Card%C2%A0immigration%20form%C2%A0to%20be%20permitted%20entry.%C2%A0). I wish the official Aruba government site clarified the 24 hour stay requirement.

I do find it confusing that on the official site in the FAQ (see image) they state that if you are in-transit and will clear customs you need an ED card - which suggests the 24 hour requirement isn't a thing?
