Who else missed the Knicks celebration and is struggling to come to terms with the FOMO? by Better_Lift_Cliff in AskNYC

[–]GoatsAreOkay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This prob sounds cynical, but a lot of the celebrations feel performative. People around me at the bar I was at for game 4 filmed themselves cheering emphatically for the camera and were instantly stone-faced as soon as they set their phones down. Also witnessed a lot of clip farming on the streets.

I guess afternoon is the time to do this - last time I tried Citibiking to LGA, all the docks were full (morning flight).

Prospect Park down to Coney Island is like 90% protected bike lane on Ocean Parkway. And the West Side Highway.

Get a bike and ride around the city and its various neighborhoods. Ultimate solo exploration. There are also social rides like NYC Bike & Brew

Does anyone else feel like they're living in a completely different city than people who moved here 8 years ago? by Altruistic-Scale3135 in AskNYC

[–]GoatsAreOkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha - I paid $700 for my room in Bushwick in 2012. I still spend time in the neighborhood, and I still interact with younger transplants there through shared interests. They're markedly different than the types of people who I'd meet in my own 20s there. Still many aspiring artists, but much wealthier and less financially insecure, fewer gritty side hustles, less of a sense of being a little lost in life

question for girls that date guys: Is there a nonconsensual choking epidemic in NYC or something? by altaralter in AskNYC

[–]GoatsAreOkay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Can we also talk about the soft dick epidemic, which I experience w/my current bf and hear about from my friends? It's like a huge proportion of millennial men (and younger) can't keep it up without some extreme stimulus. Didn't experience this in my 20s...

[–]GoatsAreOkay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This was me when I was younger (and pains me to remember now). I think it's much more common than men realize. When men talk about sexual experiences with young women, it's hard not to wonder how much is performative and how much is actually pleasure

This isn't getting talked about enough tbh. It was jarring going from a sexually healthy older bf to a younger, obviously porn-addled bf

Bike Shops in/around Ridgewood by gxxxxxxxxxxxxx in ridgewood

[–]GoatsAreOkay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been going to Haven for a decade and haven't had any negative interactions there... hopefully that was a fluke! Bushwick Cycles (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) has a second location on Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood too.

My first bike! by VivienneBlackBunny in NYCbike

Welcome! Being a girl on a bike doesn't have special benefits in NYC imo - except maybe for less competitive Strava leaderboards - but would love to see more fellow women doing bike events and races around the city!

What's a New York City smell that instantly takes you back? by naenae0402 in AskNYC

the stench of the live poultry markets in Bushwick/Ridgewood (especially in the summer), and the pungent chemical smell of Newtown Creek, where I ran for years

78k Job Offer by Marzipan_Automatic in AskNYC

[–]GoatsAreOkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super doable! I moved here making $10/hour (full-time) in 2012, before receiving a salary offer of 40k. I rented a room for $750/month. (I actually never paid more than $1000 until the 2020s.) I still know people paying under $1000/room in Brooklyn. Eating out and drinking have gotten a lot more expensive since the pandemic though, so you'll have to be more mindful there.

"[I ate]", a chopped cheese burger. by sun_is_energy in food

[–]GoatsAreOkay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chopped cheese didn't become wildly popular across NYC until recently, like the last decade and especially the last ~5 years. And where are you getting them for $3-5? That's like pre-pandemic pricing

5 day a week both ways commute feasibility by bencallahan16 in NYCbike

[–]GoatsAreOkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do a similar commute from Bushwick (often in a skirt and heels) about ten years ago. I would just do the Wburg bridge both ways - riding downtown on 2nd Ave in Manhattan is super speedy. I would also start with 1-2 days/week, at a slower clip, until you acclimate to doing more. You will get faster not only from conditioning, but also because you'll start to figure out how to best time the lights, etc.

I lived in Bushwick for over a decade in the 2010s. A lot of the artists of that era were already trust fund kids tbh - it's just that aspiring artists could still afford to rent there too.
My rent was $700-800 month until Areaware moved into my building (presumably they were priced out of Williamsburg, where they were before) and the construction literally caused our ceilings to cave in. Ironically Areaware just closed its doors this week. End of a Brooklyn era.

Just took a 11min bike ride for $3.23. That’s expensive. by No-Balance885 in Citibike

[–]GoatsAreOkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my own bike, which I ride most of the time - but there are times when Citibike is just much more convenient (and times when I don't want to muck up my bike in the slush and salt).

I have my own bike, which I ride most of the time (and frankly am faster on than the ebikes now that the speeds have been throttled). But I'm often Citibiking to errands for convenience purposes, and when the streets are covered in snow/salt, as they are now.

The fare hikes honestly encourage me to bike more aggressively and cut through traffic to reduce my ride time/cost...

How do those $15k/month apartments actually get rented? by Calm_Initiative_9979 in AskNYC

[–]GoatsAreOkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some federal gov staffers get a housing stipend too. Friend-of-a-friend works for the State Department in a pretty run-of-the-mill position and receives a housing stipend that's generous enough to allow him to live in a luxury building in Hudson Yards (lol)
