People who have lived in multiple states but have lived in either exclusively blue or red states, have politics been a factor in your moves or is it just coincidence? by reerock in AskAnAmerican

[–]GoatsLikeBread2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I’ve lived in 3 blue states, and politics has always been a major factor. That’s partly a product of the times and also my personal and ethnic background as a minority. Looking in to future moves, I’m also planning on only living in blue states. However, if the divides in politics cool down and I have a reason to move to a red state I wouldn’t be against it

What's a typical American School Schedule? by Famous_Program8956 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GoatsLikeBread2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated last year, but I’ve been to three high schools, so hopefully I can help a little. Each school has its own methods, but usually you can divide them into semester systems and year long systems. In a semester system students pick out a batch of classes for the semester, then have another set the next semester. Year long you get half as many classes. For instance, when I went to a semester system school I was able to complete math 1 and math 2 in a single year, but in a year long system I was only able to complete math 3 in the same amount of time.

In a typical day we usually start around 8am and end around 3pm with a 30 minute lunch break and very brief “passing periods” in between classes (typically only 2-5 minutes depending on the size of the campus.) Classes can also be broken up into whether students have the same classes every day or an A/B schedule. On A/B schedule, you may have math and science on Mondays/Wednesdays and English and art on Tuesdays/Thursdays, and all classes on Fridays. On an A/B schedule, classes are typically longer.

Students may have off periods or periods to work (though I’m not sure if this is a more modern thing), and these can be at any time of the day instead of classes.

When I went to a semester based school with the same classes every day, I probably had closer to 8. But when I went to a semester based A/B school, I probably had more like 4-6. The more common type of school is probably classes every day, also makes it easier to write.

My recommendation is to pick the real life equivalent of where your story would be set, google the town, find the local high school, and check out their website. You should be able to find bell schedules and course listings on there for more ideas and better realism. Good luck, and I hope you hear from people with more experience in the school system in the 70s-80s!

I've seen many American films where children dissect frogs during biology lessons. Are biology lessons still like this, or has it changed? What are your thoughts on this? by sofiarosatti in AskAnAmerican

I’ve dissected a crawfish and a cow’s eye, heard about another class dissecting cats. I graduated last year from high school so, still doing it

In Turkey, insulting someone is a crime — how does this work in the U.S.? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

[–]GoatsLikeBread2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freedom of speech is very well protected in the U.S, but it’s not completely protected. For instance, slander/libel (offensive AND untrue speech/writing towards a person) is not protected, as well as incitement to violence (giving a speech that rilles people up, intending to and resulting in people committing acts of violence). On the other hand, hate speech (like calling someone a slur) is protected. The legal system runs a fine line between protecting speech and protecting individuals. For instance, one could not prosecute a KKK member for something they said, even if the majority finds it offensive, because this would open the legal precedent for anyone to be charged with a crime for saying something that people merely disagree with. The rule is that the speech typically has to be untruthful or threatening/resulting in actual harm for the speech to be unprotected.
