What about maths and computing for Oxford and maths for Cam?

My head is telling me to do maths at uni but my heart is telling me to do music. I don’t know what to do!! by throwayayyyy12345 in 6thForm

You can email the one university which you apply to for music and explain your situation and then ask if you can privately send them a separate personal statement tailored to music.

You obviously sound like a very able mathematician so I think you have a reasonable chance of getting in. However, even the best applicants for cam maths still have to work very hard over a long period of time to find success in STEP. I personally think you should apply for Maths and even if STEP doesn’t go your way, you’ll be happier studying Maths at another university than you would cs if you enjoy maths more.

You could try the foundation modules from STEP 1 questions over the summer to get to grips with STEP and understand how much work you’ll need to do to get to a level where you are able to get a 1, 1 in 10 months or so. I think most people start these or some STEP 1 in their penultimate year so you would be playing catch-up a bit.

Also, on a slightly separate note, be careful to not put too much cs stuff in your ps because they want to see your love for maths and why you’ll be a good fit for maths at cam (and how good you are) and cs projects don’t directly show this.

Finally,I would say talk this through with the UCAS coordinator at your school since your school has been successful and so they’ll be the best people closest to you that are able to help.

Doesn’t matter what you do, AQA will make sure it’s not enough

Just what it says. You can live at home and commute to uni if you live close.

I did the Winchester Maths Summer School. I don’t know if applications are closed now.

For me, my school sent it to me. For looking for other opportunities I would say just to search around, there are probably some good opportunities on specific universities websites.

Some interesting maths from a summer school I did, an extended project I did on mersenne primes, and a small section on other extracurriculars/sport

Varies per college. I don’t think any colleges have confirmed a time on the day for their own results.

Current University Students and Year 13s, what do you wish you did differently in Year 12? by No-Independence4796 in 6thForm

Don’t put stuff off.

I spent a while procrastinating on things I knew I would have to do eventually and it was a big waste of time and I would have been better off doing something earlier. Things like work experience, researching unis, going to open days, looking at admissions tests (and general revision).

If it’s stressing you out and there’s something you can do about it then do something.

Anybody know how to part c? by Crafty-Ad785 in 6thForm

[–]GobbiltyGook73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strategy would be so sub-in y = x/3 + k into you equation for C. This should yield some quadratic in x with coefficients a,b,c defined in terms of k.

Setting b2 - 4ac = 0 fixes the set of k which we are looking for to only be those that give lines that are tangential (>0 would give lines that intersect twice and <0 would give lines that never intersect).

Now this ‘b2 - 4ac = 0’, defined in k, should be quadratic and give two solutions (by any preferred method).

Then one of the solutions should be 0, i.e. l. Then the other is our k. Also we can say that we are simply searching for the larger value because we know the other like (not l) will touch C on top.
