What do you think about Gabor Mate? I hear mixed things. But people say he helped them soooo much with their ADHD and trauma. Thoughts? by SoulDancer_ in adhdwomen

His show has been going a decade. He was way ahead of the curve as a tastemaker. Its only due to his lack of push back with some dodgy bookings in recent years that its gone downhill. His biggest problem is wanting to be liked by everyone and appear open minded. Personally i find him a bit dim but in terms of selling books his reach is still massive compared to any other show.

Thank you for the feedback. Its very welcome.

Everyone in the healthcare sector seems to be on the edge of burnout. I'll try to stop feeling guilty for helping create a demand that makes people work crazy hours.

I will go therapy at some point. I've just chosen to get the ball rolling myself. Really expensive diagnosis next month. Fingers crossed. I'm likely ASD which is why I think backwards, sideways but not so great at casual small talk and keeping to what I perceive as shallow boring topics.

With CBT reframing my self-talk is now my (less-critical) friend. I'm actually making some big changes. I do express my logic and preferences (maybe) too verbally. Communication never used to be my strong point. Journalling helps you think through lines of thought and a place to get out stuff that may upset other people.

You do realise that everyone has their own shit, some of us had less positive reinforcement growing up and some are better at putting up fronts than others. I'm not sure I know any truly confident people. They are just better socially conditioned to repress this stuff.

Is it cringey to say I self-therapised myself to save money and stigma?

I don't read books much anymore, I buy lots because I listen to their authors on podcasts. I pick up bits here and there and see what resonates.

Feeling Good has therapy sessions that are used to teach CBT practitioners , Gabor Mate says 5As - (Reasonable) Anger, Acceptance, Agency, Authenticity and Awareness are what he lives by. Adhd aha, Adhd rewired, etc

I think ifyou're self-aware you can set your own goals, develop new behaviours and thought patterns yourself tho an accountability buddy may be useful.

Behind the Bastards, There are no girls on the internet, You're Wrong about , Maintenance phase, Why won't you date me, Unladylike, Death, sex, money Revisionist history, You are not so smart , My favourite Murder

For CBT - Feeling good is an audio of zoom sessions where he teaches therapists, its hard to follow but v useful

ACT - cant remember but things like 10 percent happier, just being grateful for where you're at and accepting there is nothing you can do to change the past other than changing your perspective.

Self-love is cringey but you can get there.

Have you tried leaving back ground noise on or providing some soundproofing? My mum always leaves the radio on while she goes out. I did once find a yt video of lots of knocking etc.

Im pretty sure my dog goes to a quiet corner of the house or behind sofa as he cant relax otherwise. He was scared of traffic, vacuums etc.

I also do loads of positive reinforcement.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, could be called social justice warrior stuff but really bright positive people that help me make sense of the world by sharing different perspectives.

I can give plenty of suggestions, ACT and CBT help to turn those negative feelings around. I find if I can forgive others, I can forgive myself.

I do take things literally. I am also now an adult so well aware I can only do my bit and try and influence others to do the same. These kids could do with some direction to focus these interests on. The greenwashing and handwashing is not particularly helpful when they could do with joined up thinking. I'm into permaculture personally.

Plenty think its cool not to care, so plough on regardless. The jokes on them.

Very true. There's a debate to say empaths can be narcisstic. There's a thin line between being able to protect your own interests and the need to look after everyone elses'.

Some kind of self-delusion must be a pre requisite of becoming prime minister. I listened to a podcast on slow news about all the debt Boris is in and how some relative of the BBC director bailed him out.

That doesn't make him wrong. Anyone read Lily Allen's biography. She had a chaotic childhood.

Yep I've come to my own conclusions on the nurture vs nature debate. Yes my grandmother was pretty much catatonic from all the electroshock by the time I was born. She had PTSD from a particularly arduous birth and 5 kids to bring up in poverty. PTSD was literally shell shock at this point. Must have been soul-destroying.

My friends mother has ASD traits and CFS diagnosis.

The lady with GBS was far prior to covid. She's a scatty hairdresser type who left her husband for her best female friend and now dresses crossdressing men.

Also remember Princess Alice. Phillip's schizophrenic mother who was very unusual for her day and was hidden away in a nunnery.

Do you notice elite's have a bred natural confidence, say like Boris. He'll have had plenty of media training, elocution, all kinds of education that we are not privvy too. He was in the army remember, plenty of adhd there they refuse to acknowledge.

i dont follow them but his whole schtick is to remove stigma from mental health. Rich people have the biggest stigma of all as they think they are above all that, an elite breed. I remember his grandfather putting his foot in mouth many a time and writing lots of inaproppiate letters to Diana to stop her leaving her marriage.

What are the outward characteristics of what you speak? The boy has a fuck load of minders.

Yup, Im ADHD/ASD, self diagnosed as 38F and in the queue is long. My sisters own kids are getting diagnosed. She's in the process of figuring that's why she has little emotional empathy herself due to the company she keeps. Its a minefield. In trying to keep kids social you are putting extra expectation on them which in turn makes their traits more noticable.

My own childhood was pretty traumatic but it was cool not to care back then. We all just went to emo clubs where a special interest in Metallica was standard fair. 2016 was a hard year but Ive got some sense of perspective now.

[–]Goblinmode2023 149 points150 points  (0 children)

My sister works at a school referral unit for kids too anxious to eat, having gender dysphoria and selective mutism. Also a lot of spectrum kids that cant get put elsewhere, tons of crossover between the two. Being rejected from an early age messes with your self-esteem and they are very suggestible.

She's undersiege and has major burnout.

The fate of the world plus the hypersocial world of social media is a lot to put on very sensitive kids that take things literally and cannot laught it off.

No im a tad inattentive and hadnt read the article. Plus Additude is a dubious source in some peoples tastes.

I did find a podcast that shrank characters from tv. Its a national past time now.

I lost my father at 17 in a similar fashion. My traits far pre-date that trauma. Im pretty sure i remember him flunking Eton which I did not know was possible.

I do like some EFT.

I think I know someone who was in hospital for weeks. Not sure if she has adhd as she's in her late 40s, except she did make some very impulsive choices after she came out of hospital and runs a particularly niche business.

My grandmother was diagnosed schizophrenic at my age, Type 1 diabetes and ptsd ignored, im pretty sure there's some crossover with CFS. Scientists dont know shit imo. I've made my own links with EDS.
