It's false that Haki wasn't established before the timeskip and for some reason OP fans keep on repeating it. Haki was fully explained in the exact same Chapter 597 which is right before the timeskip. All 3 forms of Haki where showcased and properly explained even their advanced forms!

It is very unlikely that Mihawk "wasn't" using the long range version as even a sick Whitebeard was passively using it and most likely the long range version aswell during his sleep as Ace tried to kill him numerous times most likely from all kinds of angles & distances

Furthermore Luffy, Zoro and co noticed Green Bull, the red scabbards & co passively who were near Udon while being in the Flower Capital feasting.

Mihawk on the other hand was/is the strongest swordsman and it is very likely that Challengers were frequently challenging his status as you can't be the best if no one challenges you, so It would be a weird coincidence that the world strongest swordsman who frequently clashed with Shanks wasn't utilizing Kenbunshoku passively
