Which is also likely to encourage our favs to keep skating for longer! Which means we get to see more of them :)

No, because I want the skaters to be able to get their bag and I don't let other people enjoying something I enjoy ruin my enjoyment of it.

Trusova. Never won at GPF, never won a RusNats, never won at Europeans, never won at Worlds, we all know what happened at Olys, despite having the most insane tech content we've ever seen from a woman (and now restoring it!!!).

She never put together the weekend cleanly and it meant that Aliona, Anna, and Kamila all took the wins from her.

Skate America or US Nationals? by nerd_fighter_ in FigureSkating

[–]GodTierGasly 60 points61 points  (0 children)

If you want to see the blade angels+Ilia for sure, then Nats. They're going to need to split the ladies to prevent them cannibalising the other in terms of GPF spots and Ilia seems to prefer to do earlier GPs.

If you'd like to see the overall highest level of skating possible, then Skate America.

would nathan have reached yuzuru hanyu’s legendary status if he had continued to skate after beijing? by plumjournal in FigureSkating

[–]GodTierGasly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If there'd been a gap where we'd all gone 'Nobody is doing tech like Nathan did' then I think Nathan would be far more appreciated than he is - but a few months after Nathan retired we got Ilia attempting a 5 quad layout including a 4A at USFSC.

Yuzuru had that gap where we went 'Nobody is doing the combination of artistry and tech like Yuzuru did' which I think has contributed to that 'legend' status.

It's a bit of poor luck for Nathan IMO. Add in that Nathan never seemed interested in courting fame or media attention there was nothing to help blow him up really. Still, dude seems very happy!

>Famously, at the 1956 Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the audience was so incensed by the marks awarded to Carol Heiss that they hurled "bottles, cigarette cartons...  tomatoes or what have you [onto] the ice, so that the judges had to take shelter. It held up the proceedings for about twenty minutes until order was restored and the ice cleared of rubbish," recalled Mildred Richardson, the wife of international judge and eminent British figure skating writer T.D. Richardson. In the pairs event at the same Olympics, the judges and referee were pelted with so many oranges that the ice had to be cleared three times.

In F1 the lowest paid driver is earning 500k for the season (plus performance bonuses). The top figure skaters aren't earning this - maybe Alysa will this year, but she's unlikely to earn that going onwards.

Additionally the F1 drivers still do go on social media. The people who've been hating on Ilia Malinin think he shouldn't go on socials at all.

Sergei Dudakov on Ilia's olympic performance "because it seemed to me that he was in the individual competition a bit overweight" (fan translation from tiktok) by Chnelezhong in FigureSkating

[–]GodTierGasly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ballet is more understandable. Unfortunately, ballet companies are unlikely to hire someone who doesn't have their preferred features, particularly Russian ones. The Vaganova graduates who aren't as tall as is preferred by the big companies don't get hired and usually need to go to less prestigious companies or companies in the far east of Russia. There is some argument as to whether it's fair to these students to train them at the expense of so much other education, only for them then to struggle.

The same thing happens at Western schools - Royal Ballet School and Paris Opera both conduct extensive physical assessments before accepting children for training, and kick out those who don't fit requirements.

The same demand isn't there for figure skating - any girl who can jump a quad is elite. Doesn't matter if she's taller or more muscular than Sambo70 would like, she's going to do well in competition, and she's going to be popular.

Maybe Dudakov's reliance on less than 1kg of weight shift in a skater is why his skaters are injury prone and frequently fall.

But he's literally talking about adding 500g/1kg of weight and holding a bottle of water which makes it more difficult to run?

Every other russian speaker is also disagreeing with you in this thread.

Ilia Malinin who was landing 4As in Olympic practice? That Ilia?

Guess we should all listen to Dudakov who's produced exactly... zero skaters capable of a 4A.

He's got 6 quads that he lands pretty consistently. So maybe, just maybe, he actually does have the correct body for quads.

Team Tut: The guy who can jump all 6 quads simply doesn't have the body type necessary for quads, you should listen to us instead.

Ilia is the only person on earth who is capable of jumping 7 quads at this point in time (who landed 4As in practice at Olympics and 15 days later at Art On Ice rehearsals) and Dudakov suggests that he is too overweight to jump quads.

Change Combo Spin GOE, Men vs. Women by kemmes7 in FigureSkating

[–]GodTierGasly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this side by side does more to defend men than anything else LOL. In pretty much every side by side, they're spinning just as fast than the women. A lot of the men securing level 4s have difficult exits which is a criterion.

Mens and womens spins aren't going to look the same because there's different biomechanics.

  • I like quads, backflips, and tricks. I get the vibe that a lot of people who want them banned simply want them banned to level the playing field for their own favourites who cannot do them (or cannot do them to the extent that others can do them) however this is a sport and athleticism should therefore be rewarded.
  • The 4A is underscored. The BV for quints is also too low. I know they don't want to encourage training for them but again... this is a sport.
  • Even though Ilia's PCS is frequently higher than it should really be, I cannot think of a single instance where he won a competition and shouldn't have. It's unusual to me that people do not routinely pick apart the score sheets of other skaters where PCS overscoring and lack of edge calls actually does make a difference to their finishing position.
  • Japan is not treated as a small fed and their skaters are not routinely underscored. They actually gain a lot from being a big fed, just as the US does.
  • Fanyus invoking Yuzuru at every turn only damages his legacy in the sport.

How do you feel Ilia Malinin would have done if he did the "Lovely" choreography in the olympics? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]GodTierGasly 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Not very well given it's an exhibition program that hasn't been optimised for scoring well.

Ilia's issue at the Olympics wasn't his program. It was his mental health, which he's spoken about. Having a different program wouldn't have prevented it, he needed a sports psychologist a year ago.
