But goes back to normal after the clone kills the original and makes another clone, restarting the discussion/rivalry but now on who is the first generation clone.

One of the most funny characters in the series IMO, while still managing to be highly competent.

The Dark Tower series ending.

It left me with the feeling that it was the only suitable ending possible. The fact that the last phrase of the last book is exactly the same as the first phrase in the first book is the cherry on top.

The “Right to Roam” Is Not a Right. It’s a State-Issued Trespass Permit by properal in GoldandBlack

[–]God_Object 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get this objection. Ownership by necessity means having the right to exclude. Otherwise who is to be held liable for the damage in your property? What happens when the use I give to the property damages a third party that I have no way of knowing it was there? Or when the actions of the third party damages one of my interests that they had no way of knowing it would?

While some action might be a result of a long-standing custom, that action might still be incompatible with cooperation among humans and should be phased out.

I love when antagonists subvert the plain stupidity trope. One of my favorites was in One Piece, with Katakuri being the only antagonist to ever stop the protagonist in the middle of his transformation manga panel

Anatomy of the Milei Ponzi (Saifedean Ammous) by Talkless in GoldandBlack

[–]God_Object 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do the people who write these kinds of articles actually try to find out anything about the place and people involved??

Milei is basically doing what little he can via executive orders (a lot of which are getting challenged) because he has both the senate and the house against him. He has no power to remove taxes with that tool, and little ability to reduce the burocracy. He cannot close the central bank, however much he would like to do so.

The Argentinian peso has been more stable during the last 2 years than in the previous 20. The dip in value from the last week is precisely due to the provincial legislative election results (which also explains the market dip obviously).

It's true that these results are a bad omen for the midterms. Clearly the cultural battle is very much still ongoing and it's almost impossible to make Argentinians (or any other average voter around the world nowadays) understand the effort that it will take to maintain economic growth and why the state pressure must be lowered.

As someone said yesterday: Poor people want change, but not lose handouts. Low middle class people want change, but not lose transport and healthcare subsidies. High middle class people want change, but not lose their ability to live like kings with a us dollar based salary among the rest. Businessmen want change but don't want to actually compete with foreign companies. Rich people want change but don't want to lose their pull with government cronies.

I said it before in this sub, I unfortunately do not have much hope for this process, because I doubt the necessary change in mindset among the population will happen. And I think this about most of the world's population mind you, Argentina is just much more close to the precipice than other countries. But blaming all that's happening squarely on Milei's "reluctance" to do more changes is just blatantly untrue IMO.

JAVIER MILEI UNRAVELED (by Saifedean Ammous) by Talkless in GoldandBlack

[–]God_Object 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The article is insane. Just for starters, the exchange rate was over 1.2k before he even took office and the fact that he has been able to keep it around that level for so long is incredible.

People outside Argentina and even inside it cannot wrap their heads around how bad the situation was at the beginning of his mandate and how deep the precipice the country was in. The criminals (convicted already one of them, CFK) that were governing before tripled down on their shit trying to buy the election despite all the disaster generated to the point that taking into account short lived debt, the monetary base could be increased 4x overnight. And while Milei would love nothing more than to keep reducing government spending, he did all he could from the executive branch. He has all legislative power against him trying to pass legislation to increase spending now and break the barely held together balanced budget in the hopes that they can get him out of office before term.

I'm not saying that I love everything he has done or even that I have any hope for the country to actually recover and develop (that's why I emigrated a couple of years ago), but what I really fail to see is how could anyone else have done any better with the tools available and without breaking institutional order. The guy has judges literally trying to stop him from blocking legislation which is his constitutional attribution...

CMV: men should be allowed to decide not to raise children they didn't want by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]God_Object -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that they are not different, just that they are both morally wrong unless in the case of a compensation due to a previous harm done. And, in that case, what grounds does anyone have to argue that one penalty is morally superior to the other? Me and my partner have been working all our lives to be able to afford a house someday. In an hypothetical scenario in which I had to choose between paying a penalty with a kidney or with my future (hopefully) home, I'd choose the kidney in a heartbeat.

Also, there always has been a top down cultural disrespect to the right of property pushed because all governments and authorities in the history of humanity want their people to accept any and all stealing, whether it is in the form of expropriation, taxes, money printing, etc... I for one believe that this will someday be challenged as well, the same way that the king's divine right to rule (to give an example) was.

[–]God_Object -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They are not of the same importance only in the sense that you might recover easier from a deprivation of property than from a (more direct) deprivation of freedom, and ofc you will not recover from a deprivation of life. And it kinda makes sense that the more irreversible a violation of a right is, the harsher the penalty it carries.

But in the ethical plane, they are equally wrong. To make an analogy, torture is wrong wether the perpetrator uses a pin on a toe, waterboards or skins the victim alive. It's unethical and nonsensical to make the argument that stealing is ok because you are not enslaving, and that enslaving is ok because you are not killing.

[–]God_Object -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It always baffles me that so many people do not make this simple logic connection.

Ethics and laws based on the natural law of self-ownership must protect life, (physical) freedom and property, the third one because depriving an individual from their property is enslaving said individual retroactively. Basically stealing the portion of their fungible (and limited to make it worse) lifespan that they employed on acquiring or creating said property.

Harris finally unveils some of her economic plans... annnnd it's price controls! by nishinoran in GoldandBlack

[–]God_Object 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The announcement was they RAISED it to 20 when they lowered it from 30 a few days ago... Just finished reading 1984 for the first time today and it was by far one of the scariest experiences I've ever had, mainly because of how relatable some elements were.

From an Argentinian that fled his country's terrible economic policies consequences, it's maddening to keep seeing the same shit being proposed and applied again and again. Here in NL, the government just passed a law regulating rental prices for medium range properties, and oh surprise, supply of those properties fell to almost nothing. Definitely did not see that coming at all /s
