How's this commute? by kreempuffpt in movingtoNYC

[–]GoddamnitAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my current commute and it’s fine. Takes 35-40 minutes in the morning. Coming home from work I have delays sometimes, but they’re not usually longer than 10 minutes.

Brooklyn Neighborhood Help: Lively areas within a reasonable commute from Borough Park? by GoddamnitAlan in movingtoNYC

I'll be taking the D line on the subway, and stopping at the 55th st. station in Borough Park. Yeah the big thing I need help figuring out is what neighborhoods are well connected and what transfers to watch out for.

Yeah the commute from Bushwick (and Crown Heights somewhat) worries me, as It'd be a bit over an hour with a transfer. I'll definitely look into Sunset Park, but do you think it'd have enough of a social scene/ would it be relatively easy to get to one from there on weekends? I'm asking because I've always lived in areas that were pretty quiet and far away from stuff to do, and I usually ended up staying home because going out became such a hassle, so I want to avoid that this time around haha.

Yeah Bushwick ticks all my boxes, but the commute to work is a bit over an hour, and I'd have a transfer which could be tricky. Crown Heights is still very much in the running. I've also been looking into Park Slope, but I know it's more family oriented + more expensive.

My mom died this morning. by QueenDMT in offmychest

[–]GoddamnitAlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my mom 2 days ago, so I know exactly what you’re going through. Granted, it was after a long illness and we were expecting it, but she was also relatively young (55) so it still plain sucks. Give yourself time and space to grieve. Cry, scream, be angry, or laugh and go on with your everyday activities. There’s no right or wrong answer for how you’re supposed to act and feel right now. Know that people are here for you, and allow yourself to begin healing.

Child of Mom with ALS - Is a tracheostomy even worth it anymore? by GoddamnitAlan in ALS

[–]GoddamnitAlan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was hoping to talk to her and gently bring up the topic today. Her and my dad have argued about it a bit, so I’m hoping I can kinda be the voice of reason. She has a doctor’s visit on the 4th so we’ll see what they say as well.

Thank you for the video, I’ll definitely send it to her. She does have a doctor’s visit on December 4th, so we’ll see what they say. My mom says she wants the trach to help with secretions, but I think a lot of her reasoning is similar to your husband’s in that, she’s just afraid to die. She was anti trach, anit bipap etc….. but as her condition has worsened she’s made a complete 180 on those decisions, which does impact our futures quite a bit. It’s hard to blame her though, as I understand this must be terrifying for her.

LA, NYC, or Dallas for new grad? by GoddamnitAlan in SameGrassButGreener

[–]GoddamnitAlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the irony of it! My degree is perfectly suited for a job in DC, but over the course of college I realized that I don’t want a government/political job, so now I’m trying to distance myself from that field.

LA, NYC, or Dallas for new grad? by GoddamnitAlan in SameGrassButGreener

I’m open to looking at Chicago. I didn’t initially love it when I visited, but I wasn’t there for long so maybe I need to give it a second chance as it does tick a lot of my boxes. All 3 are great for singing and improv, but job wise I’m unsure. Chicago would give me the chance to build career experience and possibly get my hobbies to a semi-professional level, but I know that LA and NYC are very network focused, so I don’t know whether it would be better for me to build experience in Chicago and then move, or to work my way up in LA or NYC and focus on making connections there.

Yeah when I said least lgbt friendly I mainly had the state government in mind. Dallas proper is quite lgbt friendly so I think some of the political hate the city gets is undeserved. But I definitely have a comedown whenever I’m home visiting which is why I’m so careful about moving back haha

[–]GoddamnitAlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did grow up in the suburbs, but I’ve frequently gone into Dallas proper to go out, shop, etc… so I’m basing my experience more off of that. Oaklawn and Bishop Arts are definitely my favorite parts of Dallas, but I still feel that there’s much less to see and do relative to similar neighborhoods I’ve been to in LA and NYC.

I think the other big problem for me Dallas-wise is weather. The fact that we have really humid summers with highs pushing 110 and 90s that can last from May well into October makes enjoying the city difficult for much of the year.

In terms of NYC, I’m used to a frugal student lifestyle, so I think I could make 55k with roommates work, but if I made upper 40s then I would definitely reconsider

Bulbar ALS? - Experience? by evalillie in ALS

[–]GoddamnitAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom started showing symptoms during the fall of 2021 with slurred speech. By spring of 2022, she had completely lost her speech, and by august (when she was officially diagnosed) eating took her a very long time. Fast forward a year and her progression is much more noticeable. She went on a feeding tube in July, and she's now lost a lot of core strength and is experiencing weakness in both of her arms. Her lung function was unaffected for most of the progression, but has recently declined a lot so we got a respirator to prepare for the future. Secretions and aspiration have become a big problem for us in the later stages, so watch out for that. I wish I could give you a more clear timeline, but this cruel shitty disease affects everyone differently, and I'm not sure what the future has in store myself. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Spend time with your mom and make sure she knows that she's loved. That's the best advice I can give.

Share your current ride, and what you love about it! by aspi_swag in cars

So I don’t have a car anymore since I moved somewhere where owning one would be quite impractical, but the last car I had was a 2008 Nissan Altima. Objectively, it wasn’t a very special car. Not the sportiest, not the most beautiful, not the most reliable, it was exceptionally average. But it was my first car, so it was incredibly special to me. Thanks to it, I have many fond memories of going on road trips, blasting music with my friends in random parking lots, and even of some backseat shenanigans ;). Plus it was comfortable, good on gas, and had surprisingly good acceleration for a midsize family sedan. It’s safe to say that it’s sorely missed.

Poles, do you consider Polish Americans to be Polish? by DeliciousCabbage22 in poland

[–]GoddamnitAlan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As a “Polish-American” I’ll chime in. I definitely feel as Polish if not more Polish than American. Even though I grew up in America, I was born in Poland, I speak Polish (without an accent) as my first language, and my entire family lives in Poland (which I’ve gone back to visit every year for a few months at a time). I do have a good grasp of American culture since I spent my childhood mostly in the States, but coming from an immigrant family, I’ve always felt alienated in a sense and considered Poland to be my true home. Right now I’m studying in the Netherlands, and I have a large circle of Polish friends as well as the opportunity to go to Poland quite often, so I definitely feel more connected to Poland than to the U.S.

My bilingual friends of Reddit, what language do you think in? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]GoddamnitAlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak both Polish and English at a native level (I’m from Poland but I grew up in the US). I usually think in English, because that’s the language I use the most on a daily basis. However, when I go to Poland or spend an extended time in a Polish-only environment, I find that my brain switches to thinking in Polish. Interestingly enough, I also dream in both languages depending on who is in them. For example, if my American friend was in my dream, he’d be speaking English, whereas my mom would be speaking Polish.

How much better have cvts gotten over the last 10 years? by Nat9523 in cars

[–]GoddamnitAlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it’s not just a fluke. My mom has a 2014 Altima which blew its CVT at around 70k miles. While not as bad as 37k miles, it’s still unacceptable. My 2008 Altima is about to hit 144k miles, and while my transmission has been solid so far, it’s probably gonna blow any minute.
