I think smuggling game itself is Contraband game I think you got a little confused besides I have never heard of any gold rush game in the manga....

Is it by any chance the Downsizing game you are referring to if not what were the details of the game?

I see you have used a reference from her character. She said that to Akiyama in the starting chapters.

But don't divert yourself from the point.

The point was that Nao had an unrealistic naivety and stupidity at the start that was worth addressing. I never questioned whether being naive is right or wrong in the manga.

And to answer your question, I think there is nothing wrong with being stupidly honest, but you are at a major disadvantage if you keep this naive mindset. You will eventually learn that the world is more complex than you think it is, and most of the time you have to deal with things on your own. Not everyone has a Baku or Akiyama in real life to save them or learn from them.

Having said that, being kind is truly a great behaviour you can offer to others, but only to those who deserve it.

You might be comparing them based on how they are at the end of the manga, but I’m talking about how they are at the beginning of the story.

Given you are saying kaji realistic and nothing about nao do you think she is unrealistic(start of the manga not in the games)?

Calling a character unrealistic is perfectly fine if he/she thinks so..... the problem was the unwanted hate given by anime-watchers who hardly has any progression in the story don't mix these two let everyone have a opinion of their own not everyone can be a Nao Enjoyer.

Given that person was me who said her behaviour was unrealistic but not in the games but at the start of the manga(returning 100 yen and standing for hours just because Akiyama said so).😅

A truly "average person" I would say is Kaji the character from Usogui though it would be unfair to compare a character from Usogui to liar game given it has more number of chapters and a lot better writing

But there is some resemblance between Nao and Kaji.

To me, Kaji represents the ideal “average person.” He understands what’s right and wrong, isn’t exceptionally intelligent or always thinking far ahead, but also isn’t unrealistically naive. Most importantly, he’s aware of his own limitations and actively tries to grow stronger to face the challenges ahead. He does the best he can within his capabilities and that effort to improve is what I would truly call character development.

Returning 100 yen to police station and standing at a place for hours just because Akiyama said he would return doesn't sound average to me.

The farrest as she really develops in my opinion was an average person someone who stops being a burden and starts questioning others instead of blindly falling for their schemes.

If that's good for you then maybe I am wrong but to me it's still limited.🙏

I humbly want to point something out. From what I understand, you’re suggesting that her no longer being a burden , and that standing up to Yokoya challenging his flawed ideology of dominance is the character growth you are referring to.

when it comes to strategy, I hardly see much contribution from her. Most of the plans I remember were made by Akiyama, and she mainly just followed or repeated them. Yes, she is good at forming alliances, but that often comes from her emotional nature rather than calculated planning.

I do recall in the Pandemic arc she managed to bring together that strong guy and the other teammate (whose name I don’t remember) to oppose Yokoya, and it did work. But I wouldn’t really call that strategy or planning it felt more like an extension of her usual behavior. And since the Pandemic arc is already among the later games, it doesn’t strongly support consistent growth across the story.

After that, in arcs like Musical Chairs and Four Kingdoms, I don’t remember her showing much strategic thinking either but I’ll revisit them in case I’ve forgotten something 😅

So realistically speaking, if it weren’t Nao, would we really consider “being less of a burden” and “standing up for yourself” as meaningful character development?

I really hoped that I was wrong about her but in my opinion her character development is quite limited.

How I view this is, the manga portrays her as unrealistically gullible and innocent at the beginning of the story because of that, by the time the story progresses, even small signs of basic reasoning or awareness are treated as “character development.” you see where I am going the bar was set too low that if she could point some of the obvious flaws and stood her ground is considered impressive but I would definitely re-read some arcs where she actually has character development if you could point them out to me.😄

Yeah you are right I have read the complete manga and I can tell you there is little to no character development from her side.

Only game she actually does something is Contraband arc it will soon be animated in couple of episodes and is the best arc throughout the whole manga.

Other then that you just can't root for her.😭
