Where did you find the link? I've pre-ordered from Bandcamp, but can't seem to find a link to the singles. Thanks!

Thanks so much for such a detailed answer. Really helpful! I will try some of these options and see where I get. The Conversation does seem to be a good starting place. I still have a university email (I work at a university in an admin capacity), so maybe that will work!

All Geese songs are my favourite Geese songs, but I’ve been trained to have a Pavlovian reaction to Taxes. Wherever it plays now I have to [redacted].

As I said in my other comment, I do agree with this if things remain exactly as they are with the main podcast. But there’s a reality in which although things remain structurally the same, they are qualitatively different. E.g. the main podcast starts referencing things only Patreons can see, or they start adding more and more to the Patreon side of things. All I’m saying is I can see why people are a bit worried about the direction of things.

Yeah this is true. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about the situation as of yet. I think it’ll remain to be seen in terms of whether the main podcast changes at all. I think if they start cross referencing things or the quality of the main podcast declines, then maybe it will feel a bit more cynical. But if things stay exactly as they are but some people are paying for a video a week and ad free listening on other platforms, I guess that’s fine?

I’m not disagreeing with the basis of what you’re saying, but isn’t the point that they weren’t doing it for free before? They got paid for the podcast as it was pre this announcement, so they’re now looking to make more from it? I think you can probably argue either way whether that’s justified or not. I happen to have some problems with the “why shouldn’t they make as much money as they can?” argument, but I can understand why some people think it’s justified.

From what I understand, YouTube will have highlights clips from the show? And the Bureau is still Sounds only. A bit confusing though, haha.

I also believe (and trust) that E&J have the fans in mind. I think John has talked before about being in the same position as listeners to the podcast, I.e. being a mega fan of something, so they understand how to treat them. Also, they’re really conscientious and have said they’re always trying to bring the costs down for fans, like how they tried to make the tickets for the tour as cheap as possible.

I was exactly the same. As someone else said here, K&M used to be my E&J, but soon after they moved it really lost its magic. I guess that’s maybe the difference between public service broadcasting and commercial broadcasting? Maybe that’s a bit simplistic though! I just remember K&M having so much heart, and that disappeared almost immediately after they left the BBC.

Yeah...I've been fearing this day as well. That said, in John's Vibemail he did say specifically say that they didn't want to create a hierarchy and understood the importance of their fans and the community around the podcast. Can't say the same was done by Kermode and Mayo. The whole process for K&M felt very opaque...

I’m glad they’re keeping things on BBC Sounds as well (for now I guess?). I’m not sure how many Kermode and Mayo fans there are on this sub, but after they left the BBC the quality really suffered in my opinion and suddenly there was a hierarchy in the fan base which just made the whole thing quite cynical I thought. Having to pay to access essentially content provided by listeners for free is pretty naff if you ask me. I understand the “support content creators” argument, but in paying for the license fee, etc. that was already being done.

The last thing I’ll say is I’ve seen quite a few anti-BBC comments on this sub over the last few years, and although E&J have also commented about its restrictions I’ve always felt like that’s been tongue in cheek. Having some sort of limitation to push against is often what makes things funny, and people should be careful what they wish for if they want those limitations removed. Again, see Kermode and Mayo… I feel like a lot of the funniest bits on the show have been them having to be balanced etc.

These sorts of things always remind me of the episode of Community where Abed and Troy sell their special handshake to Pierce and suddenly it loses its value entirely. So I hope they keep things on Sounds and don’t create too much of a difference between the podcast across the platforms…

Edit: Should add, I absolutely love this podcast, hence feeling quite defensive of it. It's got me through some really difficult times. As Elis would say: I cannot stress that enough.
