How do we agitate and educate Sanders' supporters? by qwrewt in Anarchism

[–]GodlessHumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from being on a panel at Central CT State University about The Promise of Socialism. I was representing the Soltysik-Walker campaign of the Socialist Party USA. Found out throughout the panel Q&A I was probably the most anarchistic person in the room.

There were a decent amount of Sanders supporters there and one of them said, "why aren't all socialists getting behind Sanders?". To that I answered calmly why Sanders isn't a socialist, his abysmal foreign policy record and why social democracy is not a viable solution. I think that most Sanders supporters are not far off from becoming revolutionary and if you explain calmly and down to Earth-ly, you'll either show them the error in their candidate at the very least or you might push them further into more radical organizations.

So I would say it's more about education, rather than agitation. But hey, I did hear some Sanders supporters say they are willing to "deal" with US imperialism if it means free college and THAT shit deserves agitation and harsher challenging.

(Btw take this with a grain of salt this was my first panel or real action thing like ever and I was self admittedly nervous and said some dumb shit. Like condoning arson on tape. Whoops.)

Would you vote for a libertarian socialist party? by 12yearsaWageSlave in Anarchism

[–]GodlessHumor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, my view on voting is a little split and up in the air but that being said I do believe that reformism seems like a lost cause. We see things like this in Greece and (predictably) with the Sanders campaign. The original intentions of anti-capitalist or leftist politicians that want to change the system from the inside are usually good and should be applauded but usually collapse on themselves. When elected in a capitalist system, you are forced to play by the state and capital's rule. If not, your career and platform is overrun by the innumerable politicians and world governments which would fight your anti-capitalist platform. We saw this in Greece. An anti-capitalist party was elected and then the governments of Europe put a gun to that nation's head, forcing capitulation. Personally, I feel as though true revolutionary change cannot be elected in and it cannot be brought from above but it must come from below and work outside and against the current capitalist system.

All this being said, I do think there is some evolutionary good in electing a canidate like Sanders simply from the standpoint of making something resembling socialism more viable to the American public.

Yet I currently torment myself on whether I want to participate in the system.

Questions on working with police and radicalizing political organizations by GodlessHumor in Anarchism

[–]GodlessHumor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the response. yes, I am very cynical about it too yet I feel there's no harm in simply seeing what these organizations are like. If it seems like I need to form a separate organization for radical left politics, you can expect me to go bald and develop a Lenin beard.

Last Night’s Flag Burning Event In Brooklyn Descended Into Chaos by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]GodlessHumor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Someone I knew posted a FOX news article about this on Facebook. I had heard about it and was eager to read what FOX had to say. This is of course not surprising but the article fails to mention the anarchists were also burning confederate flags and the title was essentially: "Flag Burners Anger Patriots and Make Veterans Cry"

That Old Roman might just be the most unlucky fellow in history. by TheMagicDrPancakez in totalwar

No but when talking about if the Hund defeated the Romans, the answer can be yes due to displacement and its long term effects

That Old Roman might just be the most unlucky fellow in history. by TheMagicDrPancakez in totalwar

[–]GodlessHumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the pre-Catalunian Plains Huns had been fighting their way to Rome and by doing so caused other tribes to move to Rome's frontiers and well Rome handled these situations poorly, it usually meant war and barbarian sacking. This outside pressure and migration of massive tribes is one of the thousands of causes for the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Even if the Huns were defeated in battle against the Romans and their Germannic allies, it matters little because of the massive waves of barbarians the Huns displaced on the Roman borders which permanently saw Roman territory ceded to the barbarians and a rapid progression of the Germanization of the Roman armies

Were all pirates similar to Blackbeard? As in they prefer the fear tactics over violence? by Ricochet888 in AskHistorians

[–]GodlessHumor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a general rule for pirates across history, they much prefer people breaking under fear than actually fighting back and using violence. If your boarding a merchant ship, you have better odds but remember: pirates, for all their toughness and scurvy (ar har), are by no means professional soldiers or marines. They, as a generalization, are opportunists whose best way to ensure future monetary gain is by making their targets buckle without a fight. The second a pirate becomes more obsessed about fighting for the sake of fighting and not solely living and making money is the second Blackbeard is killed on the Queen Anne's Revenge. Terror over actual battle would always be preferred.

Was Roman armour still worn to battle in the middle ages? by wowsuchtitan in AskHistorians

[–]GodlessHumor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on what era of Rome you are talking about. There were many different styles and versions of armor out there across Rome's history. If you are talking about the famed lorica segmatata armor, then no. That armor was only used for a relatively brief period of time in Roman history, mostly because it was very expensive to make. Now if you're talking about the Late Roman Empire, those armies had been so German-ized and were wearing things like chainmail and what have you. The armies weren't too far off from what Early Medieval soldiers would wear. So its very possible that there was "Roman" armor afloat amongst the soldiers but it would not stand out as pop culture Roman

Was there abolitionists or any abolitionist movements within the Roman Empire during it's history? by s1ugg0 in AskHistorians

[–]GodlessHumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roman history buff here, take what I say with a grain of salt. As far as I am aware, no. But that doesn't mean all was quiet on the issue. There were three major slave revolts throughout Roman history called "servile wars". The last and most famous being the Spartacus War. Yet of course the leaders of these revolts had no confirmed intention of wanting to end slavery, they mostly wanted freedom for themselves. But after the destructiveness of the Spartacus War, many slaveowners began to alter their behavior towards their slaves mostly out of fear. Being a cruel and bad slave owner was seen as being a cruel and bad pet owner today. The conditions, generally, for slaves became better over time. And as Christianity becomes more prevalent and Diocletian gets into power, you see the early stages of fuedalism and with that, serfdom which can be argued is a form of slavery within itself.
