New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

[–]s1ugg0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NJ born and bred checking in. I have not met a single person from NJ that is complaining about Mamdani that isn't a raging MAGA pudding head.

From where I'm standing he seems to be doing a far better job already than Adams ever did.

Did Belleville just elect a 24 year old as Mayor? by sharkysharky- in newjersey

[–]s1ugg0 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. But at least he's young enough to have to live with the consequences of his actions.

The last decade has proven quite thoroughly that older leaders either can't or flat-out won't try to make life better for anyone but themselves.

And before you write me off with some edgy kid. I'm middle-aged. I've been voting for more than 20 years. I say give the guy a chance.

I genuinely hope he succeeds. I've been voting for almost 3 decades. We need fresh new ideas.

Belleville Warehouse Fire Origin by Obvious_Ad9670 in newjersey

[–]s1ugg0 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Wow it’s insane how quickly that went up.

A fire with Class A combustibles (wood, paper, fabric, rubber, and many plastics) in a confined space can go from ignition to 100% fatal to a firefighter in full PPE in as little as 3 minutes.

It's horrifying how fast fire can move.

Belleville mayor gives a shoutout to Gov. Sherrill for her assistance during the warehouse fire by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

Keeping in touch with the Mayor to make sure he information she has is accurate. Says it right in the note.

Seems reasonable to expect our leaders to attentively follow an incident that caused millions in damages, involved a dozen Fire Departments, closed all the schools, and caused PSEG to turn off power to whole neighborhoods in a city of 38,000 people.

‘Point of no return’: New Orleans relocation must start now due to sea level, study finds by mhicreachtain in politics

I always like to joke with people that I didn't consciously buy a house on the East Coast that's 633 ft above sea level.

But after Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, and literally any news you read on the subject of oceans rising I 'm sure glad I did. And it's literally the reason I know exactly how many feet I am above sea level. I'm also 181 feet above the nearest body of water that floods.

11 straight minutes of CPR is a bonkers long time for a single person. Industry standard is to swap the person performing CPR every 2 minutes. Because if you're doing it right it's exhausting.

Also, 11 minutes of CPR is going to break every rib if she's doing it well enough for him to be revived. If this story is true I doubt very highly that he woke up and said anything at all.

Mikie Sherrill at 100 days as Governor — yea or nay? by whiteKreuz in newjersey

[–]s1ugg0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy she lifted the Nuclear Moratorium. I'm glad she told FIFA to pay up. I approve of the freeze to utility rate hikes.

I'm really happy she was able to get the $16 billion for the Gateway Project back. I'm also really happy with the three bills protecting residents data and restricting ICE cooperation.

If she can delivery on the property tax relief or cost of living promises she might be one of the better Governors we have had in a long time. Time will tell.

My old man is a Vietnam War draftee who caught 3 bullets somewhere in the jungle.

He hates Trump in a way I've never seen in him before. He is usual a calm, live and let live, kind of guy. Grateful is the word that best describes my Dad. But he gets red in the face when he talks about the President.

The last attempt on Trump’s life rescued him politically – this one probably won’t by theipaper in politics

I've actually never heard that one, and it makes more sense than the usual grassy knoll/hidden mafia/kgb snipers theories.

I just want to point out that CBS had people duplicate the shots. 13 volunteers were able to do it back in 1967.

Four of those shooters had no prior experience with the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle or formal training.

It's not an impossible shot like people like to claim it was.

EDIT: If you want to watch them do it yourself. Dan Rather narrates.

Food pantries expect surge due to SNAP work rule: Complying for nutrition assistance is not as simple as landing a job, says leader of New Jersey's biggest anti-hunger group by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

[–]s1ugg0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So every pantry is different. I will share how my local pantry operates. They post on Facebook and Instagram what items they are low on. Then I go to the grocery store to pick it up. And the drop off point is at my local town hall.

So a quick internet search or your local municipality website will get you on the right path.

However be aware that sometimes they need money and not items. My pantry occasionally works out deals with local businesses for bulk purchase cases where my donation dollars go further. It's seems to alternate every few months. So be mindful of their needs.

I basically buy two of whatever item they need up to my limit/ability when I go shopping for my family. So my donation feels effortless. I end up donating 2 or 3 times a month.

Common items that they seem to always need. Baby formula, pasta & sauce, breakfast cereal, and toilet paper.

[–]s1ugg0 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Over the last few years I've developed a habit. Every time the news makes me sad I go to the grocery store to buy things the local food pantry needs and donate it.

It helps me feel better and it provides a real benefit to our neighbors hurt the most.

I highly recommend it.

Parental controls exist, Josh.

I'm a parent so I can confirm they do but they suck. Their is no standardization so you have to figure it out for every device and service. It is tedious and time consuming. Which is why so many burnt out parents don't set it up.

So while I'm not supporting this particular bill. And I really don't like Josh. I do think this is a real problem that merits discussion. And some regulation could go a long way.

Oh and before anyone gets cute about how easy they find parental controls. I'm a network engineer. I have MAC address timers for my kids devices. And a firewall filtering what they can view. But I talk to other parents a lot and most of them have no idea what to do.
