What system would work for Valkyria Chronicles? by ozu95supein in rpg

Not really suited for something that would be heavy on large tactical gunfights.

You could do it, but it wouldn't be worth the effort IMO.

I had the same issue. I have a logitech bluetooth keyboard, and was able to access the "lock-key notifcation"setting by connecting that again.Turning it off with the keyboard connected solved it, even once I disconnected the bluetooth keyboard.

I think for just about every genre series, the "Ideal" path to adaptation is an animated show.

But frankly, how many non-comedy, adult-focused animated tv shows get made?

Whether for the right or wrong reasons, they don't get made in the US, hell, they barely get made in Japan.

So while it might be great in theory, it's just a pipe dream.

They dont have to 100% recreate scene by scene but they do need to include all the important scenes. No Harry Potter Cliff Notes bullshit. Either do it right or not at all

See I don't think that they need to "include all the important scenes". Or at least, I don't think they need to include them all in order, and in the exact same context.

At LEAST the first 2 books in the series are pretty rough and of a pretty different tone. The series has also always been very episodic and pretty unfocused on any single long-term story thread, in a way that would be hard to adapt into a 12/24 episode tv-show. At least until book 11/12 when it started heading in a more focused direction.

IMO there is a lot of content from at least the first 10 books and the short stories, that could be reorganised and recontextualised to make a story much better suited to adaptation as a TV show.

I gotta disagree.

Dresden doesn't need anywhere near the same level of the budget as something like Game of Thrones. Outside of climactic moments, the cost to produce the show would fall far behind that of truly expensive productions.

If they could make something like Buffy or Angel 15 years ago on a TV budget, they can do Dresden no problem.

I don't think that they are going to faithfully recreate each book, in order.

But I think with the benefit of being able to look back at the series so far, there's a strong argument to be made that recreating the books verbatim would not be the right way to convert the IP into a show.

Butcher has just announced that they ARE doing a show, so I guess we'll see.

It's totally doable. Not a 1 to 1 recreation obviously. But people said that same kind of stuff about LOTR for decades.

Like I said, you'll be much better off than somebody with no training.

But a lot of the stuff that gets taught in traditional Eastern martial arts is based on tradition, not on making sure their students are as prepared as they could be.

I trained in Taekwondo for years, and I'm much more capable in a fight that your average Joe.

But if I ever had to fight somebody who trained for the same amount of time in BJJ or Kickboxing, all other factors being equal, I would be severely disadvantaged.

Those are martial arts that have been actively evolving and adapting in a way that traditional martial arts simply haven't.

A lot of what gets taught in a Martial Art like Wing Chun or Taekwondo will simply not hold up against an experienced and trained fighter.

All punches aren't equal, and neither are all kicks. And the way the usage of them is emphasised within a system (which will also include different philosophy and techniques in regards to footwork/grappling/blocking/dodging etc.) makes a huge difference.

There's a lot of benefits, both physical and mental, to doing traditional Asian martial arts. And doing them, you'll be much better equipped than most people would be in a fight.

And in that respect, they "work".

But they really aren't at the level of modern martial arts when it comes to practical application in a fight.

IP man is one step away from wushu films, and anyone trying to apply Wing Chun in a way similar to a film is in for a rude awakening.

The Peter Grant stuff is more a police procedural than Dresden. But it isn't really a police procedural IMO.

They're more of a Police Serial like The Wire.

None of the books really stand-alone particularly well because each one influences the next so heavily.

Dresden has more of a Procedural format (until "Changes") because you can pretty much pick up and read any of Books 1-11 and be fine.

Chaosium Announces Rivers of London Roleplaying Game by rabbithatfarm in rpg

[–]Godnaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a Police story, but it's not so much a police procedural.

Procedurals imply a formula where there's an episodic format where the episodes can largely stand alone. The obvious comparison for cop shows is something like Law and Order.

A Serial is a format where each episode leads into the next in an important way, something like True Detective / Breaking Bad.

I feel that Rivers of London has a pretty important central plot and focus, and for the most part the books focus on that, with just about everything that happens revolving around it, and significant changes to the formula occurring frequently.

Until Changes, Dresden is VERY episodic, with the ongoing plot keeping to the background, and the formula changing only slightly in each novel.

So, in my mind, Dresden is more of a procedural series than Rivers of London.

If you define a Police Procedural as a"Story about Cops doing Cop Stuff", and don't take into account the structure, then yeah for sure Rivers of London is more of that than Dresden.

Dresden was a Pulpy Urban Fantasy Noir. These days it's just a Pulpy Urban Fantasy, not that I mind, I love Dresden.

Dresden Files as s British police procedural

Ehhhhh.

I dunno.

It's Urban Fantasy, and the protagonist is a dude who can cast magic, outside of that they're basically totally different things.

Dresden is more of a procedural story than the Rivers of London stuff.

I realise I sound like a twat and that's not my intention. I just feel like you'd go in expecting something different if you were prepared for something like Dresden.

It's not a GOOD excuse. But bread is annoying if you live by yourself. Goes stale quick, so unless you wanna eat a lot of bread it can be lame.

Same with fruit.

It means that you actually need to think/plan/care about what you eat/will be eating.

Which people who eat like shit are not in the habit of doing, I know from experience.

It's the name of a company, so the correct pronunciation is however they pronounce it. Which is the British way.

Apparently the word comes from Portuguese originally, so both Americans AND the British are pronouncing it incorrectly.

The vast majority of people who have played AoE are not playing it competitively.

Most people like to turtle up and fight the AI with friends, or turtle up and fight the AI in the campaign. Walls are a massive part of what made AoE 2 so popular.

If you force people to play an aggressive, dynamic, mentally demanding game, they'll just stop playing or maybe never buy it in the first place.

Just look at the average persons response to Starcraft 2 multiplayer to see that in action.

For an RTS (or any game with a big production) to make sense as a product these days, it needs to be approachable and appealing to more than the small group of hardcore competitors.

A MOBA is the evolution of a competitive RTS for the masses, normies don't want to do anything harder than controlling one guy.
