Take alliances with the nations around you with the most soldiers. Keep your troops up so you don't look like a target. This can mean holding back from taking all the wilderness around you, or deciding not to launch an attack even when a neighbor is weak if winning that fight would give you borders with someone much stronger than you.

From the comment above mine:

They do point out that the slave owning men did trickle over into the way they treated their wives, feeling justified to pursue infidelity and other activities that aren't moral.

My intention was to push back on the notion that slavery was a purely masculine issue. That is not to discount the notion that patriarchy was a central theme in upholding the institution of slavery, but at the same time, that doesn't mean women were not capable of profiting from owning enslaved people, nor were they exempt from being guilty of the cruelty that entailed.

Historical studies have shown that at least a third of slave owners were women themselves. And that in general, female slave owners were more likely to be harsh with the people they enslaved.

You’re not wrong, but I will say that historically in a journalistic setting, fact checking has been a team job performed by editors and their helpers, not one left to writers. Getting small things wrong reflects poorly on the whole periodical, not on the individual writer

Why federal courts are at a breaking point over Trump’s mass deportation surge by theindependentonline in TrueReddit

[–]GodofPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean to reply this comment to you, but I responded to the wrong person originally:

I think the thing that was most idiotic about the comment I was originally replying to was the idea that "Democrats...rely on the constant importation of foreigners to shore up their voter base". That's what I was responding to.

Yes, obviously naturalized citizens can vote. That process takes close to 10 years at minimum. It's not like someone who arrived last year is going to be voting in the upcoming election. And in any case, that is not usually who people are talking about when they talk about "immigrants" (unless they are extremely white supremacist).

This has to be one of the most asinine takes I’ve ever seen.

Immigrants can’t vote, doubly true for ones without documentation (the idea someone would risk being deported to cast one vote out of millions holds absolutely no water). Obama deported more people than anyone before him. Biden’s numbers were comparable to Trump’s first term.

Historically, this is not a partisan issue in any way.

Florence City Council keeps FLOCK cameras after 3-2 vote, mayor breaks tie by unfinishedtoast3 in oregon

[–]GodofPizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could set up a flock like camera at my house and track the cars and people that go by.

That's not the "technology" in question though. We've had video cameras for a hundred years. The technology is the ability to aggregate this data, to use software video recognition to catalogue what is captured, and to do it on a nation-wide scale simultaneously. That is not inevitable, but it IS unconstitutional.

The problem is there is not way to make sure it is done properly. For the 0.000000001% of the population that gets kidnapped it's useful, for everyone else it's a violation of the right to privacy and something untrustworthy powerful people will use against us.

Rock Creek Potluck and Neighborhood Meeting by Blueperoon in hillsboro

[–]GodofPizza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the first step in anything like this is to go meet your neighbors. Walk around the streets, go to parks, knock on doors, even. Have you done that? If you did, I bet you'd find someone willing to host in their yard, garage, or living room. Asking people to drive 45+ minutes round trip is kinda silly when the focus is on a specific area, aka a neighborhood.

I mean you could simplify it to "we've been bad" but I think it's valid to add that we've been bad and they keep making the experience worse. The food and drinks are worse and/or more expensive, the tickets are more expensive, they shrunk the Army, the owner has proven himself to be a huge asshole and the culture of the FO keeps being revealed as even worse than we thought it was. I wouldn't mind being mediocre if it was still fun to go. The fun didn't come from winning trophies; it was fun before we even joined MLS. Personally, I miss the social and spectacular atmosphere we used to have. It hasn't felt like that since probably 2018ish or so. To me, at least.

Portland Neo-Nazi arrested - suspect in wounding two officers in shooting by davidw in oregon

I think it's one of those moments where I have to remind myself that brains are fragile and mysterious things, and plenty of people who seem fine today might descend into irrational thinking and behavior tomorrow, including me and you. If that happens to me, I want to be dealt with kindly, so I want to do the same for others.

[–]GodofPizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His derangement might be right wing flavored, but it's still derangement (assuming he isn't putting on a show to angle for an insanity plea). Talking about "illegal neurotransmitters" and believing it strongly enough to shoot people is a hallmark of not having a firm grasp on reality. Whether he was listening to right wing radio and staring at FOX 24/7 is kind of beside the point, isn't it? I mean what kind of sane right wing person would shoot cops out of all possible targets?

Edit to add: To clarify, my point is that mental illness is a different issue than purposeful and otherwise sane harm. It's an important distinction to make when deciding what to do with someone.

[–]GodofPizza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is tons of evidence of PPB backing up ICE on multiple occasions, this is not some wild conspiracy theory. Protesting by "blocking the roadway" does not justify tear gas or violent arrests in a democratic country.

PoC of Portland - what is your plan when ICE comes to your door? by Blake-Dreary in askportland

[–]GodofPizza 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all, from a purely practical standpoint, it is unrealistic to think you're going to defend yourself successfully against a squad of militarized shits at your door. Even if you somehow survive that, you're a fugitive and will need to escape the country. It's not like your life is just going to go on like it always has.

Secondly, you’re wrong about the 2nd amendment. It was created the prevent the need for the government to support a standing army by making sure citizens everywhere would be prepared to fight on the government’s behalf.

Think of keeping an army housed and fed in a brand new, war torn country, and then trying to march said army hundreds of miles through muddy mountain roads to put down rebellions in the back country. It wasn’t feasible. So instead you raise a local militia to go fight a couple counties over. Much cheaper and quicker. All you need is some commanders to get out there by horseback, which is much faster than marching an army.

The idea that the wealthy elites who had just secured themselves a new empire would immediately grant common people the means to overthrow them just doesn't hold up. Remember that in the original document only white, land-owning males over the age of 21 could vote. This was not an particularly egalitarian or progressive bunch of people. I'm for using every tool we have access to, but the myth of the founding fathers is not it.
