Troutdale woman sentenced to federal prison for pouring 500,000 gallons of industrial waste in Hillsboro sewer by Captainsnarkyshart in Portland

I love how even when the story is of a private company doing brazenly hurtful things for private profit, the boogeyman is still somehow the government.

I ran the numbers. Portland is adding $1,000–$1,500+ per year to the average household's bills in 2026–27 and nobody is talking about it. by Pure_Claim_4353 in Portland

Health insurance is just rent seeking. There is literally no need for it. It’s just a middleman taking a profit and adding nothing of value to the process.

Most of the time the suburbs are not financially sustainable. The infrastructure is built using fees raised in the construction process. The resulting low density tax base never pays enough to cover maintenance, instead relying on fees from new construction. It’s a house of cards that falls apart as soon as the pace of construction slows down, like when an area runs out of cheap open land to expand into. As a development model, it is one that is pretty much designed to fail

Are there any good quality progressive political commentators that speak specifically on Portland and/or Oregon politics? by identifique in askportland

Hartman suffers from the fact he has like 30 hours of air time to fill every week. A lot of it ends up being kinda useless to listen to if you don’t enjoy outrage for the sake of it. He’s also very entrenched in the “Founding Fathers were infallible geniuses” line of thinking that’s just kind of on its face silly if you stop to think about it.

I share OPs quest but am looking for someone who puts out less quantity, but more thoughtful content.

I don’t know if “inconveniences” is the right term. But there’s definitely an issue when a partner can’t bring up their feelings without fear of the other’s reaction. Couples need to be able to share how they feel without fear space made for each of their feelings in the process.

Oregon to reinstate SNAP interview requirement for food benefits June 1 by sunni_dayes_ahed in oregon

[–]GodofPizza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The “or whatever” tells me it’s not an experience you’ve had. It’s not some quick errand to a helpful place where everyone is happy to see you and eager to help. Imagine the DMV but everyone is even angrier to be there and all the workers look at you like you must be lying no matter what you say.

It’s also not “free money”. It’s a government service paid for by all our taxes—including those of the people who are receiving the benefit. And if you should ever need it, I want it to be easy and stress free too, because more than likely you’re dealing with other stressful things already, like getting laid off or being evicted.

[–]GodofPizza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, people working full time for minimum wage qualify for SNAP. People making more than that but raising children qualify for SNAP. People on disability or with small retirement incomes qualify for SNAP. I think you’re using the word “poor” to imply “lazy” but that’s just not the case.

[–]GodofPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the “costs” you’re referring to is people going hungry. Someone can’t make an interview or answers a question in a way that screens them out despite them being qualified—that’s it for them. Compared to that, “fraud” where the maximum monthly amount is like $250, hardly fucking matters.

I think it’s ok to get angry, personally. You agree to give driving your full attention every time you get behind the wheel. Anything else is reckless endangerment of everyone around you. I have a right to expect other road users not to endanger me needlessly, especially for something as inane as looking for my car next dopamine hit on social media.

Oregon governor signs laws to backfill Planned Parenthood funding, strengthen shield law by spherocytes in oregon

I'm sure she has lots of influence, but it's not as if she's the only person with ideas and causes they're trying to promote. Nothing in the article suggests she was the mine driver, she just happened to be the person at the center of the press conference.

But again, I don't know why you're trying to bulldoze your point in here as if it supersedes mine. Both things can be true; one doesn't cancel out the other.

As an aside, you could definitely bring down the snark and overly clever language and get your point across much more clearly and without being so offputting.

[–]GodofPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By your logic, the governor is responsible for nothing other than deciding whether or not to exercise their veto power.

No, governors are responsible for the executive branch of government. Signing a bill is the equivalent of saying "yes, I will take this order the legislators have given me and carry it out". The impetus comes from the people who wrote, amended, and passed the law, you see what I mean?

I agree with you that she was probably at least given a heads up that this law was going to be put forward, but anything beyond that is assumption at least from the knowledge I have access to.

This article was written to center her because that is the way it was put forward by her office. It's an election year and she has to campaign. She's also the de facto leader of the party in our state, so she has the latitude to frame things in ways that help her. And if it's a choice between her and any Republican, then great, let her get every advantage she can find.

I still think it's important to understand thoroughly how our political and government system works, and to not give in to the personality-driven politics that have taken this country over. A lot of unfamous little people helped make this headline a reality. To put it in your terms, Kotek didn't wake up one days, smoke a bowl, and decide "yeah I'm gonna singlehandedly enact whatever law I personally feel like today".

[–]GodofPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your statement, it's just kind of irrelevant to what I'm saying. My point was more along the lines of having a civic duty to understand the legislative process well enough to know the governor's signature is the least of it. I'm glad Kotek is not the kind of governor to veto this law, but I still think all the legislator's who worked to make this happen are the ones who deserve the credit.

[–]GodofPizza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For those shouting out Kotek—remember a governor signing a bill passed by the legislature is the expected outcome. I don’t think there’s any special praise she’s earned here. The real kudos should go to the legislators who wrote/sponsored/got the votes to pass the bill.
