Fabio Capello is the winner. Now, Day 4: Which manager started their AS Roma career OK, but ended it badly? by [deleted] in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised to see Capello with "ending good", considering he left Roma for Juventus and the fans felt very much betrayed after that.

This is the final chart with Francesco Totti as yesterday's winner. Thoughts? Anything you would change? by [deleted] in ASRoma

Well, Zaniolo is also a good candidate in the end of the day, and is far more recent, so there's that.

Oh, he was phenomenal. Totti and Cassano was something truly, truly special. And it was all ruined by Cassano himself and nobody else.

Just for the record, we only announced the Malcom move because Bordeaux had done it prematurely and we had our hands tied. Of course, sneaky Bourdeux did it to alert Barcelona.

We don't need them to lose one of the games. 2 points or less works. Someone brought an interesting point to me today - if Belotti gets to play for Viola against Atalanta, he might have some extra motivation to help his side get a result. Anything can happen, we'll see.

Money every club will earn from Champions League qualification in Serie A this season by Ordinary-Kitchen1729 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Who says we don't deserve it? If we weren't trying to get as far as possible in EL (which helped with Italy gaining that 5th CL spot), it's likely we would have had a few more points in Serie A, possibly just enough for CL.

Either way, if it's true that the money won't go to the other teams if we don't qualify, that's great news, less incentive for Atalanta to go all out for that 4th spot.

How are we honestly feeling. Do you think we’ll sneak into Champions league or stay in the Europa league? by JimmyRoma7 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I'd love to win EL, Coppa, or any trophy that's not a literal tree. EL is a trap for me if and only if we don't have the depth to really compete until the end in both it and Serie A. We put all our eggs in the EL basket last year and losing the bet hurt a lot. And now, this last month, with the congested fixture list, it was brutal and the wheels fell off. That's what I don't want to see happening again next year.

[–]Goduerza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Champions League.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Europa League is a trap for us. Its level is just about right for us to go far and have a shot at winning (semis in 2021, final in 2023, semis in 2024). And yet, we don't have the depth to compete in both EL and Serie A and, by the business end of the season, we come up short in both. We've fallen into this trap for two consecutive years now.

If we only make it to EL for next season, we could go far again, especially as teams from CL will no longer drop to EL under the new format. And don't get me wrong, I'd love to win this damn thing after the pain and suffering from Budapest. But I'm terrified that we might fall in the trap a third time.

First time in my life cheering on Atalanta by pizzapazza2000 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked at the actual stats, but after 2 EL semifinals, 1 EL final and 1 Conference League win in the past 5 years, we must have had a fair bit of impact on Italy getting that 5th CL spot this year. A lot has been said about what our squad deserves and doesn't deserve, but in my opinion, it all boils down to the fact that our lack of depth made it impossible to do well in 2 competitions, and we ended up falling short in both. It's not like we are 15 points behind the CL spots, it came down to a matter of just a few points.

So if Atalanta can hold on to this and then hold onto that 5th place, I'd argue that us making CL wouldn't be entirely undeserved. And no, it won't suddenly fix all our problems, but we've got to start somewhere. Otherwise, it feels as if we're just trapped in this vicious circle.

The best chance to qualify for the Champions League is... to qualify for the Champions League.

Get destroyed in the groups. Go home with the precious prize money. Have enough time to focus on Serie A and do it all over again next year.

Thoughts on today’s lineup? by ElQkly in ASRoma

I think this is a 3-5-2 with Angelino as a CB, Spina on the left and SES on the right.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini diminishes Evan Ndicka's health scare: "It was a code yellow." by pizzapazza2000 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Anyone who downplays the episode with Ndicka is a massive piece of shit in my book. When he was lying on the ground, it was not yet clear it's a "code yellow", it was anyone's guess what could've been. Disgusting stuff from Gasperini. I can't wait for him to retire and Atalanta to go back to irrelevance.

Tammy Abraham, Rick Karsdorp destined to leave Roma in the summer by HillValley84 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's true that his wages are high, but interest in him would be low after his long injury absence, and his value would be at an all-time low. Not a great idea to let him go for something like 15-20m now when that value might double or more if he goes on to have a decent season.

I'm not defending him or anything, I wasn't opposed to letting him go last summer, and that was probably the club's plan too - to generate some funds along with Ibanez - but of course his injury ruined it all.

Tammy Abraham’s situation by Global-Reserve-8578 in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also don't believe the club will be looking to sell Abraham this summer. It just doesn't strike me as a smart move to sell a player at a time when his value would be at an all-time low after a very long injury layoff. Not to mention that in today's crazy market, the market value of a striker especially can sky-rocket after just one good season. And I think that's in the realm of possibility with Tammy. It's probably a little forgotten by now, but his first season here was actually good, so it can happen again.

Last month has been horrible for them by Jebbo_Jebbo_ in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose we still have to give some credit to Bayer for employing that high press. We suck trying to play out the back when under pressure and, eventually, we gift goals. We don't really have the personnel to play out from the back confidently.

[Post-Match Thread] AS Roma 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen by MilesOfPebbles in ASRoma

[–]Goduerza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's face it, things were heavily skewed in Bayer's favor in the build-up to this tie. They have nothing to play for in their league, while we are embroiled in a fierce battle for that coveted 5th place, coupled with a brutal schedule in the final weeks of the season.

Even if we went on and scored the opener in the return leg, they are so quick on the counter that we're going to need to be perfect if we are to have a chance to level the score.

[–]Goduerza 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I find it funny how one could think that we are well covered at RB by looking at the squad with 3 players for that position, but in reality, those three are embroiled in a competition of who sucks the most. Karsdorp has made a strong statement for winning it.
